There are the finalists (they all got at least 10 votes), World In Motion and Such A Good Thing almost made the list.
Sorry if you think no song here diserve this title, but I had to select the best of the last round...!

Seeing as WIM never made the cut I'll go for Shellshock which actually made me cringe the first time I heard it. Unbelievably it was then followed by the almost equally poor SOTN.

Yes I am crazy = me voting for SOTN as worst song
"State of the Nation" makes me wonder what they were thinking. Sometimes it makes me want to cry, but mostly, it's just vomitous.
I can see why some of those other songs might be hated, but honestly, what's so especially bad about "Chemical"? It's not their best song, but I don't think it's as atrocious as "Liar".
Its a tough one but I can't bring myself to vote. I always thought that SOTN and Shellshock were always quite good live.
I am abstaining, and shall make an impassioned plea to my fellow travellers across the world to do likewise.
We All Stand, State of the Nation and Shellshock may not be everyone's favourite songs, but they were bloody good live, particularly We All Stand, which isn't done justice by the album version.
should't it be "BOTTOM 5", not "TOP 5"?
Chemical ... i'm not sure why everybody disses this track, because of the harsher techno noise part of it i guess, thats the only part of it i like... the song structure quickly waters down to the same formula that over half the songs on Republic share... Spooky does the same exact thing... I would have liked more of a harsher techno song to show some younger energy... i thought it stood out from the blander songs around it on Republic
Rock The Shack... i always get the impression that some people dislike this song only because of the guitars which seems like a stupid reason... the title seems so stupid because it seems kinda serious... like Barney saying "were going to switch gears now people, and really ROCK this shack! ... whooo!... let's ROCK THE SHACK... WHOOO!"
State of the Nation ... the lyrics seem juvenile and forced, and the female backing vocals are totally inappropiate and unenjoyable, but the song has some energy, they even used the bassline again... but it is well deserving of the title ... an inappropriate single with huge missteps
Shellshock... i'm sorry but this track is an utter cluttered trebly mess, with everything and everyone throwing something into the mix without any real style, with forced rushed lyrics (i can just imagine Barney saying at 4AM "c'mon... what the fuck rhymes with... ?!?!")... i guess it is kind of endearing in a Pug dog type of way, fun to sing along with
We All Stand ... the PC&L's version is kinda of a downer (and they are right, the peel session is much better), but they obviously found it interesting, give it points for at least experimenting and having fun... like 586 too on PC&L's
Also voted for SOTN of that lot; just listened to it today while driving around, and found myself fast forwarding the tape.
I'm not voting for any of them. Although the lyrics may sound like crap, I like all five of them musically.
cannot believe such a good thing didn´t make it. cannot believe state of the nation is leading this poll. cannot believe so many things.... my vote´s for chemical. by a mile!
I voted for State of The Nation as I do beleive it to be the worst new order track ever, Shellshock has better lyrics and if you take away the cheesy over the top 80s production it isnt that bad(Arrogants cover anyone??) Chemical isn't a bad track in my opinion and neither is rock the shack.
We All Stand, great live if PFD is anything to go by.
cheers ALEX
Shellshock is a good New Order song. Many bands would like to compose it...but New Order are not a normal band, I know.
SOTN has, more or less, the same problem. One fact only: SOTN is worst than Shellshock, specially in lyrics and backing vocals.
We all stand....the only bad song in an extraordinary album.
Rock the Shack...uff.
Chemical....more uff.
My vote goes DEFINITELY to ROCK THE SHACK.
This one's really hard. Dunno how Chemical ended up here - there's soooo worse tracks on Republic, surely?
We All Stand has a wonderful Peel version to rescue it.
State of the Nation was great for its time - that 'Shame of the Nation' thing that backed it was awful though. They played that side on Roundtable when this came out (it was a weekly review thing on Radio One) and I remember cringing as Elvis Costello and that bird he was married to from the Pogues absolutely SLATED it. I think they just introduced the track as 'Shame' and they all agreed it was (er, a shame).
Rock The Shack has been salvaged by a magnifcently moody Lamacq version and has generally been alright live.
Probably gonna have to go with Shellshock, but even that ain't all bad compared with some.
Where's that Subculture re-hash? Now that was truly awful!
I live in Australia and "state of the nation" was considered so bad that it was made a b-side to "bizarre love triangle", that's how bad it was(but i still like it).
I'm with all those who aren't voting. I dont think anyone should really complain about the lyrics too much as they have never been a strong point of New Order.

"And this is how it feels to be On the payroll company. Your every scene is in the round, We don't need to hang around."
These lyrics go from "not a strong point" to serious interference with listening pleasure.
Well...I'm going to have to go with SOTN...
and
If your asking me - as I think you are - I am not to fond of 'We All Stand - I would usually try and scan past the song on the tape but because New Order knew I (and others) would do that - they did not enough dead space between it and a good one 'the Village' so you get screwed twice! That is of course if you're asking me! : - )
Alright.. I'll let this one go.
Seems like State of the Nation took the lead.. and well, I'm surprised We All Stand didn't end up with this title.. not that I don't like the song, but because it won last round.
no i'm not choosing. sotn is a good song that kicks off great and has great whirling guitars and synths. so i dont agree with it, my least fav is prob we all stand but i still like it.
I can see the tomatoes flying now! :D
Let's just say that I would only take RTS off the list...if Bobby Gillespie never sung on that song! I had to vote for RTS! I hate that song! And the only reason I hate that song is because Bobby Gillespie sings on it! And that fucker's not even singing...he's speaking/shouting, like Bob *fucking* Dylan (whom I don't like as well)! Granted, Barney and Hooky have had to shout/speak their share of songs over the years, but Gillespie's voice is just shrill and irritating to me.
Yes, the other songs aren't great...but they aren't bad either. I liked SOTN 5,000 times more than Shellshock because SOTN has a more distinctive musical sound than Shellshock. NO was even pressured to make the song, and the film's producer (or whatever) didn't even like it after all!
Any way, this is just my opinion...and I know a lot of you like RTS and have your reasons, that's fine.
Everything about RTS sounds great...except Bobby Gillespie. ![]()
Shit! I gave Chemical my vote and totally forgot about Shellshock!!!
And I do love Rock The Shack.
We All Stand. I bought PCL recently and it just ruined the experience of an otherwise perfect album for me.
Omg, how can anyone hate Rock the Shack! Bobby gillespie is so good, primal scream are the second best band to new order! I can understand that its probs not to some of your tastes, but dont slate them. im not voting as they all have a hint of genius to them.
Although State of the Nation seems to be widely disliked (even NO themselves seem to ignore it these days) I have great memories of it. I saw NO several times around 1985/86 when they often opened their gigs with SOTN and it always went down a storm. I seem to remember that also around this time the band would often come on stage to the title music from the film 'The Vikings'. I think this would make an excellent addition to the audio files. It used to send the crowd wild. When it started you knew NO were about to come on.
Well...obviously, I'm not a gigging professional or anything of the sort. But I did study vocal performance for about 8 years, and I have been singing since I was 6 or 7...so that's the vantage point I am coming from. Hell, even Barney and Hooky have grated on my ears on a couple of tracks, but I still love the music of NO/JD et al. Maybe it's because I haven't given much of a chance to Gillespie & Co. But then again, I won't give half an asses chance to listen to a band like Korn or Linkin Park (as I'm just not into that sound). Any way...just my two cents.
Strange how our preferences are divided. In the 'best NO song' competition I remember myself replying: where is State of the nation? State is one of my all time favorites, not only compared to NO songs but to ANY song. The vinyl 12inch State/Shame is one of my best buys ever. Whatever... Reading all the odds against State I'm wondering if I'm in the right forum here.
Regards, Erwin
surely Slow Jam is the worst...
i voted for RTS...i would rather hear Chemical and Shellshock on repeat than 2 minutes of RTS...please NewOrder, no more collaborations on your albums.
We All Stand, but the worst in my view is Liar, by miles. We All Stand just sounds bizarre, Liar is criminal in how thoroughly pathetic it was. Absolutely Putrid, lyrically, musically, vocally, pure rubish.
Oh, such a repetition of ideas...
I voted for "We All Stand", but I wouldn't call those songs as the "worst" ones, I'd call them "weirdest", as I did when I threw out a topic like this in the portuguese forum. I had cast "We All Stand", "Denial", "Chemical", "The Village" and "Run Wild". These ones are really weird (not Weirdo!), not to call'em boring. But I don't think worst as a good nomination.
Thanx
Tough list to chose from. I actually like the songs on the list. Shellshock was the choice only because it's the song i like the least, but i don't think it's crap.
I don't like Chemical because I don't like the feeling throughout Republic as a whole. But I'll defend SOTN every step of the way.
