Just thought this might be an interesting thing to see. For me, it was almost simultaneous, but it took a fair while before I realised they were mostly the same bunch.
which came first...?

Not sure how to answer this. I knew of and liked New Order before Joy Division, but I bought a JD record before a NO record. So, erm, draw your own conclusions.
New Order first(Sometime in the early spring of 1985)...but bought my 1st JD record (closer) about 2 months later
i heard newOrder first (blue monday) and then i heard "love will tear us apart" by joy division, the best band ever.
Joy Division was the first I heard, I discovered New Order not soon after. But by a matter of days (and the fact that it took me nearly a year to get into New Order) it's JD
i first discovered NO (i heard shellshock on the pretty in pink soundtrack and heard blue monday, but didn't get into them until i saw true faith on MTV a year or so later), and then around 1989 i picked up JD substance because of the connection with NO.
Joy Division....summer 1979. Lost track of music in 1980 due to illness. Heard Ceremony (original) on John Peel and suddenly realised who the band were!
Latter part of 1979 for Joy Division. A friend had finally found the Transmission 7", and he was kind enough to tape it for me.
New Order when I was about 14. Bought 'Still" about 3 months later and almost shit myself in fear. Never heard anything like it. I remember liking Isolation (cause it was catchy) and having to listen to it long and hard before I turned to the dark side.
i was at Jims records in pittsburgh and I saw a black record with white lines all over it that looked like mountains. of course it was fact10. that is my first time enountering the band.
" i just saw new order play for the first time" "really? how old have they gotten?"
In retrospect my first purchase of a JD/NO record would have been unintentional when I bought the missus the Paul Young album Non Parlez which featured the cover of LWTUA which was always my favourite track although I was clueless as to who originally recorded it. Years later got into NO and then JD.

dude, i couldn't even tie my shoes yet in february, 1979! ![]()
I bought LWTUA in 1980 when Ian died (wanted to hear what they sounded like), loved the song, became disillusioned upon listening to the albums. Later heard Blue Monday ('83?), loved it, became disillusioned upon hearing the 1st album, heard Perfect Kiss ('84?), LOVED it and stayed a fan. Didn't fully get into JD until 20yrs after first hearing them.
Sometimes it just takes a while.....
:D:D:D:D:D:D anita
The short answer is: I was aware of New Order before Joy Division, but it was JD that really did it for me first.
