I was surprised at how much your version of Digital was good (was it really Digital -- can't remember for sure). That could certainly be put on a cover compilation like that one, studio or live.

Think about it !

Truth was FW, Marty and Jim Reilly. Thieves Like Us, Day of the Lords and Warsaw were FW, Perfect Kiss was Marty, FW, Jimbo, Liv, Major and Jugga from Fat Shaft.

You may have only heard Day of the Lords, which would certainly need some post-production before ever seeing the light of day !!

I've always been HIGHLY sceptical of cover versions but im intrigued to say the least at this offering :)

Still i spect i'll hear it next week when i come up and terrorise Corby and Mancland ;)

I've decided I rather like cover versions in principle. Even when they're bad they can be interesting or amusing. e.g. the Ceremony cover on one of the older tribute albums that sounds like Michael Gyra of the Swans jamming with Swiss euro-disco types Yello. As long as you don't think about what a travesty of the original it is its quite funny.

Ceremony - Nice intro and great drumming. Overall not bad at all. 7/10

Temptation - This is great, very chilled out. I like the guy's voice. 9/10

Age of consent - Fantastic version. Love the feedback guitars and the bleepy noises. 10/10

Your silent face - Takes too long to get into the song really, not sure about the vocals, and that drum is a bit annoying. 5/10

Blue Monday - A brave attempt at an acoustice style BM. Doesn't really work for me. 5/10

Lonesome Tonight - Love this guys voice. But i'm not sure i was supposed to find this funny, oh well i enjoyed it. 7/10

Perfect kiss - Very short, but good. More please! 8/10

Shellshock - Great piano. Very nice slow version. 8/10

True Faith - Hmm. Interesting singing. Love the way it really kicks in for the chorus. reminds me of guns and roses for some reason! 7/10

1963 - Once you get over the accent this is a good version. Funky double vocal type thing going on. Got my feet tapping, so it must be OK. 8/10

Round and Round - Another short one. Vocalist sounds quite a bit like barney in places. Good music, rather like a cross between BM 95 and True faith perfecto mix. 7/10

Brutal - Great music, but the vocals are drowned out. Still enjoyable. 6/10

Crystal - Didn't like this one. Too downbeat and a bit boring. Sorry guys! 4/10

Rock the shack - An improvement on the original, but that's not saying much! Only joking. 6/10

hmmm, this reviewing thing is harder than I thought...

Ceremony I Like the interpretation of the guitar parts. Very 'edgy'. Not sure about the vocals at first , but that seems to be true of all cover versions, its like, 'thats not Barney, what have you done with Barney?'. Usually they grow on you, I expect this will do likewise. What accent is that? At one point it actually sounds Welsh (though I'm assuming it actually isn't). I'm not normally a big fan of English vocals by people who's first language isn't English (cf Flunk's acoustic Blue Monday, or that Japanese tribute album), I always think it would have been _much_ more interesting to have had the lyrics translated into the native language of the coverer. No offense to non native English speakers, but I just think, say, a Norweigan Blue Monday, or a French Round&Round would be cool.

Temptation Radically different intepretation, which is a GOOD THING (such a good thing). Thats Blue Monday, BLT and now Temptation we have acoustic versions of - acoustic substance here we come. Very nice, highly Jesusandmarychainy, which is another GOOD THING as far as I am concerned. Yeah, I like this a lot (maybe my favourite of the cd), can't find anything wrong with it. Mind you its impossible to completely ruin this song, given that its the greatest song ever made by anyone anywhere. I'd like to hear Beethoven cover it, the way he did the Order's Xmas flexi.

Age Of Consent Noticably different from the original, more downbeat. Very listenable, though I prefer the joyous exhuberance of the original to the more solemn take on it here.

Your Silent Face Another very solemn one, almost monastic (what _is_ that word that goes something like 'sephucural' and seems to fit this sound???? Its driving me nuts trying to remember it. Someone throw me a bone here). Like the synth parts, less keen on the percussion, don't know why exactly. A better than average cover though.

Blue Monday This sounds very very similar to the Flunk Acoustic cover. Is it a cover of a cover? Though I think I prefer the vocals on this one to Flunk's version (less of a Norwegian accent), and there's a bit more going on instrumentally. (PS, anyone got the various remixes of the Flunk version on cd or mp3?)

Lonesome Tonight This sounds very odd. Again, totally different to the original, which is good. Not sure what I make of it, needs further listening.

The Perfect Kiss Instrumentally not too bad, but the keyboard noises are, dare I say it, a trifle cheesy. Short and instrumental - just an excerpt?

Shellshock Not a huge fan of the original, to the extent that I'd say all the covers I've heard so far improved on it. This one is...interesting. The singer's accent/mannerism reminds me of someone. John Lennon? Bowie? The ending is...even more interesting. Is it possible the coverers didn't much like this song either?

True Faith Good grief. The Beverly Hill Billies cover True Faith? OK, but the vocal mannerisms/accent is distracting.

Round&Round A decent version (though presumably not complete, at 1.06?). Another one where I'd have much prefered to hear the lyrics translated rather than have a non English-as-a-first-language singer tackling it in English.

Brutal Another one where I'm not a huge fan of the original. I think they definitely have the right idea by rocking it up a bit with distortion etc. Decidedly lo-fi. Does it need more production or is that the intent? Reasonably good version of a middling song.

Crystal Crystal as a dirge. Very hard to do something distinctive with this after the 10,000 or so remixes done in that acid foundary competition. They make a good stab at it though. The expression 'slack jawed' seems to fit somehow. To be honest the vocalist isn't first rate - but then neither is Barny.

Rock the Shack Not sure about this one on first listen, to be fair I never liked the original anyway, and at least this doesn't have Bobby Gillespie on it. Seems faster than the original, almost as if they're rushing to get it over with.

Bizarre Love Triangle er...I think this one still needs a bit more production work, no?

1963 Decent version, rather muddy production. Not hugely exciting but a nice jaunty version. For some reason it makes me think of buskers, but not in a bad way. (if it was faster and more shouty it would sound like the Violent Femmes)

Not being able to sleep I had a listen to the Flunk version, and come to the conclusion the version on the tribute album _is_ by flunk. The vocals are almost identical. It sounds like a demo of the already released version, or one of the vinyl-only mixes that I've never heard maybe. Is that right? (what's the point of vinyl-only releases, by the way?)

Oh, and thanks to the rocket for the cd.

I'm sure one could do a 'cross mix' of that temptation one with the JAMC's 'some candy talking'.

Track by track.....

Ceremony - didn't really happen for me by the end of the second play, but maybe it will. Sounds to me that they couldn't quite make their minds up whether to do a straight cover or to toy with it a bit.

Temptation - superb. Absolutely excellent acoustic version that has now been played about six times already. Plaintive voice works realy well.

Age of Consent - heard rave reviews of this version, and I wasn't disappointed. Slightly unsure about the strange noises that I couldn't quite attribute to any one instrument where there were guitars on the original, but there you go.

Your Silent Face - nice. Takes the "chill-out" factor and gives it a certain ambience that New Order don't quite manage themselves.

Blue Monday - again, a great version. There's something refreshing about hearing acoustic takes on well-established electronic tracks, that makes them stand out more than simply copying the original.

Lonesome Tonight - after the first few seconds, I was expecting Mark E.Smith to sing ! Wonderful low-fi once-in-a-lifetime version that grows on you with every play. Has a certain je ne sais quoi, I think we'll say.

Perfect Kiss - can't really think of anything to say, other than it sounds like one of those midi files you can download off the net.

Shellshock - WTF ? I swear this geezer is trying to sound like Elton John. Nearly pissed myself when the "shellshock" bit came in towards the end where it all speeds up. Bizarre :)

True Faith - and I thought Mentalist's version was bad.....this really didn't work for me.

1963 - again a grower, charming in its arrangement, nice lyrical twist (if you can call changing the lyric to "for fucks sake won't you listen to me" charming anyway... :))

Round and Round - ad nauseam. Another midi file.

Brutal - I enjoyed this, partly because I am starting to really like the original, and partly because it did a few unexpected things here and there.

Crystal - can't remember this, after two plays, so it didn't make much of an impression.

Rock The Shack - quite enjoyed the guitar work, and there was an honest impassioned yearning about the vocals. A pass.

BLT - caused a snigger when I remembered a few Fall tracks that sounded very similar. Five seconds of genius !!

All in all this is definitely one I shall invest in, there's some innovative versions on here that complement the originals. Absolutely love the version of Temptation.

There are indeed some excellent COVERS here and LONESOME is a winner!Some of the others have taken time to grow on me but this and AGE OF CONSENT hit me straight away.Also loved the BLUE MONDAY acoustic one and the TEMPTATION cover is a MUST!I must get round to a full review which has kinda been lost in the NOOL forum being down and my recording commitments!:D

Firstly we have EVENTIDE with a superb guitar sounding CEREMONY.Great vocals which compliments the guitar SOLOS and excellent drumming.I would certainly like this to be longer and they have captured the essence of the ORIGINAL but added some great liittle twists.Well done!

A beautiful acoustic rendition of TEMPTATION with great vocals and i must admit this is one of the best cover versions i have EVER heard of a NEW ORDER SONG.Praise indeed from the ROCKET Anthony Stretch has certainly lived up to his named and STRETCHED this song IMHO. FANTASTIC and some great harmonising at the end. ROCKTASTIC.:D

Hell,when i first heard this i was knocked out by the keyboard and guitars but the drums are excellent aswell.Great vocals and i have played this many times.Another track that is up with the best of COVERS i have ever listened to.KII NOO have really added some great sounds...bleeps and EXTRAS to this already fine track. Go out and buy this one peeps.You will love it!:D

FoR ThE ChoSeN FeW are next with YOUR SILENT FACE.Builds up very nicely then we have a rather delicate keyboard and drums complimenting each other.CHILL OUT ROOM here we come(hey but no drugs at the PLANET ROCKET!) and a KRAFTWERK type feel to this record appears.The vocals i most certainly enjoy and when it gets a bit HEAVIER in THE WALL OF SOUND department it is truly enjoyable.Weird backup vocals and you can then enjoy a BOWIE/ENO a la LOW YEARS to this sound with a bit of early 80's sounds to the MIX.Rocket ...what are you on?A wonderful travelogue of music experience.I like this a lot.Goes on for aprox 8 mins but well worth the TIME.

SO HAPPY do this version of BLUE MONDAY and a great effort it is too.Very acoustic and not too many BLEEPS and SOUND EFFECTS.Stripped down like this it is best listened to after a hards days work in a THE PLANET ROCKET recording studio.SO HAPPY...well YES i am!

I was too supposed to give you some news about this tribute album project but past months have been pretty hectic I must say and things progress very slowly I am afraid. But I must say I am really moved by your reviews, guys! It's really nice of you and give a lot of encouragements for the following. Some of the groups involved in the project have been reading your reviews too and they were really happy about it. I also wanted to give u a few infos about the CD. There are a few projects concerning the art of the CD and we (the people I am working w/ and myself) wanted the groups involved to choose which cover they prefer. There is the one u know and a few others that have been sent to us. But we thought too that it would be cool if all of you guys could vote for the one u prefer. We would also like to steal the idea of the "True Faith: A Tribute to New Order" CD and get the name of the fans on the CD. 1963 covered by MAGNOLIA is a bit too BLAND for my liking. Nothing new here!

ROUND AND ROUND by FEELINGS OF NOWHERE has some great sounds in but is only an edit.Need to hear more!

UNWISE do BRUTAL.HEavy sounding and great guitar work has me enthralled.The vocals are good if not very CLEAR but this adds to the excitement of the song.Rocking here at THE PLANET ROCKET.Get out the 's and we can PARTY.Superb effort guys!

This group could have come from the PLANET ROCKET with a name like THE PURPLE LORDS OF THE SONIC CHURCH!:DCRYSTAL is the song in question and is VERY different from the original.Guitars from another DIMENSION.Like SHUGZV says a bit JAMC/VELVET UNDERGROUND but to me this enhances the track.Some clapping in it too .Lovely jubbly.

AIRBOX do ROCK THE SHACK with a difference.Sped up and wacky vocals but some GREAT guitars and this grows on you.Bet they can play this LIVE and ROCK THE F...ING HOUSE DOWN. Well tried and a good CD track.

CEREMONY (EVENTIDE): This one's fairly well done. I'd say one of the better tracks on this compilation. Puts some real energy into the song.

TEMPTATION (ANTHONY STRETCH): Well it's an acoustic. I'm not much the acoustic fan, but a nice try. Pretty good.

AGE OF CONSENT (KII NOO): I really liked this one. I don't think the band needs to improve on anything here, pure magic.

YOUR SILENT FACE (FOR THE CHOSEN FEW): Starts off quite nice, but turns into noise with a drumbeat inbetween lyrics.

BLUE MONDAY (SO HAPPY): An acoustic version. I like it about as much as I like Flunk's cover. And that one wasn't too bad.

LONESOME TONIGHT (UNE VIE AUSTERE): Oh no. It's my favorite song (HA!)... I don't know. I guess it's better than the original, but not one of the better tracks on here. At least they got rid of the spit.

THE PERFECT KISS (SHED): This one has potential. It does kind of sound like the midi file, but with added vocals and more.. loudness(?) it will prove to be great.

SHELLSHOCK (THE RAMS): I was extreamly impressed until the vocals started. Then it took me a fwe seconds to like the cover again. THen, at about 3:00 or 3:50 or something, the whole song changes and sounds like shite.

TRUE FAITH (AIRBAG): Not too bad. Not that impressed because I"ve heard so many True Faith covers so..

1963 (MAGNOLIA): This one isn't too bad. The end kind of turns me off though. But other than that, well done.

ROUND & ROUND (FEELINGS OF NOWHERE): This one as well as The Perfect Kiss will be great when finshed.

BRUTAL (UNWISE): This has to be the best track on the entire album. It's a shame the quality is so bad. The guitar sounds perfect, as well as the drumbeat and the bass, but the vocals get drowned out in the chorus. Still extreamly impressed.

CRYSTAL (THE PURPLE LORDS OF THE SONIC CHURCH): Not too bad, I guess you could classify this as another acoustic. A three out of five.

ROCK THE SHACK (AIRBOX): My second favorite. They really made the song a great one. Could have extended the "shaaaaaack" part like Barney does. But great none the less.

BIZARRE LOVE TRIANGLE (who knows): Cute. :)

OVER ALL: To be honest, one of the weakest tribute albums out there. But this albums good songs are amazing. Thanks Mick, Means To An End is great!! And love the live stuff!

I've been listening to this a lot recently, and will implore everyone to buy a copy, just to hear the excellent renditions of Temptation, Blue Monday, 1963 and Lonesome Tonight, as well as the weirdest Shellshock in existence !

I'd say it was worth getting just for Temptation. Especially if one is a JAMC fan.

Thanks to Rocket Mick for this disc! As promised, here is my review....

1. Ceremony: Decent cover, I thought this was really true to the original. The vocals are good and the guitaring is quite good.

2. Temptation: I really like this cover. Very acoustic and adds a different twist to it without all the other instrumentation. Kinda reminds me of an unplugged session. Definitely one of the better ones on the album.

3. Age of Consent: Absolutely the best cover on here. Very true to the original while still adding its own touch to it. I was very impressed with this - the vocals, the guitars, the bass...everything was just class.

4. Your Silent Face: Mellow, slower and quite different than the original. Kinda drags out in the beginning but it's mediocre. Just got to be patient with this one.

5. Blue Monday: Didn't like this too much. It sounds way too much like Flunk's cover. In fact, so much that I can't really tell the difference. A bit too slow for me, yet at the same time hauntingly intriguing. I'd save this for once in awhile listens - there are better covers than this one.

6. Lonesome Tonight: Mediocre cover, if you can get past (or used to) the different vocals. I think it's not bad.

7. The Perfect Kiss: I like this one, but would have really loved to hear some vocals included. Mediocre.

8. Shellshock: I really like this one with the piano and slow tempo. Almost kinda sorta has a Lennon-esque feel to it. The end where the song changes completely is where it is ruined. Omit that part and this is just as good as Age of Consent.

9. True Faith: Starts out good then at about the 1 minute mark it starts to get too rock-ish for this type of song. The Boo Radley's cover of this was done very well, though. This is mediocre.

10. 1963: Not too bad here if you can get past the vocals. Takes a few listens and it turns out to be better than first listen. Another unplugged type song.

11. Round & Round: This one sounds great! It has that New Order Technique Ibiza sound. The only unfortunate detail is that's it's tragically an edit. I'd like to hear the full version - if it sounds just like this all the way thru then it's a gem.

12. Brutal: Mediocre at best. I can't get past the monotone vocals on this one. He doesn't sing with much excitement or passion. The background and instrumentation is fine, it's just the vocals...which leads us to...

13. Crystal: I can't stand the vocals to this one at all! He sounds half-awake and drugged out of his mind. Too mellow for me. Could be good for the elevator ride though.

14. Rock the Shack: Not bad, not bad at all. I'm not the biggest fan of this song but compared to the two above, this song is decent. Pretty similar to the original. Nice guitaring, too.

15. Bizarre Love Triangle: Can't really add much to this but who is singing this? Was hoping there was a proper Bizarre Love Triangle track or Regret.
