Is In A Lonely Place included in the Heart & Soul box set? Is it same version as on Substance and on Ceremony 12"? If it's different - in what way does it differ?

It is included, but it's Ian singing (Barney sings the NO version) on a slightly dodgy demo tape. Interesting to hear, but the sound quality's not the best
Same as IALP. Substance versions way, way superior-mainly becasue their produced properly. The versions on Heart&Soul are just from a demo tape
Thanks! :) The reason I asked is that I'm putting together a compilation disc for a friend (who's going to see New Order together with me when they come to Stockholm), and he's into Joy Division, but haven't really listened anything to New Order. I want to include IALP and Ceremony on my disc, but thought that it might me unnecessary if they were the same as on Heart & Soul.

Any NewOrder compilation should definitely include Ceremony. IALP: Hmmmmmmm...not really a fan myself....
Seb, don't you think the original FAC33 version is better than the rerecorded version on substance? 
What's the difference between the one on FAC33 and the one on Substance? 
I have both versions, but I don't have a record player at the moment (so I can't find out for myself)
To be honest Muffy, I do prefer the version on substance. I think the reason is that Substance was the first New Order album I got & I think generally you nearly always prefer the first version you hear. I also prefer the Temptation and Confusion versions-though I'm fully aware I'd be in the minority there

Aha. I don't know how the version on the white w. blue stripe (the one with "veritas" printed on it?) sounds (well now I know that it's the one on substance) since I bought it after I moved away and left that record player behind. I also have that "brown" one - isn't it bronze btw? But I can't listen to it again cos I dont have a record player (keep repeating myself here). All I have is my stereo. Why don't they put everything on cd!?? I would want them to put Cries & Whispers on cd so that I can listen to it! Right now all I have is a crappy mp3version. 
I also want to be able to listen to high quality cd versions of Vicious Circle (N.O. mix), Evil dust, Let's go (original one, with lyrics)...
The best version of Ceremony is the 12" one with white sleave and blue/black(?) stripes on it. But this is certainly NOT the version that appears on Substance as its much more atmospheric. I always found the Substance version a tad disappointing.

I have got a 12" of Ceremony (green sleeve) imported from England and bought in 83/84, it was the second song of NO I have heard after Blue monday.I was thinking the song's name was "Ceremony in a lonely place" it sounds really much more powerfull and bright than the substance version, definitively one of the best 12" they made as good as Blue monday,Perfect Kiss,Confusion or True faith remix 87.

Maria, the mp3's are probably as good as the cds as long as they are at at least 192kbs. I have all of them on my hard drive at true cd quality which is 320kbs so if you must have them at that quality join Audio Galaxy and download them but you probably wont hear the difference.

I agree with everything apart from the Confusion bit: Just remember - "There`s no Confusion like the one from 83"
Actually your are probably right regarding Confusion..apologies for the contradiction. Where do you stand on Subculture-again I prefer (only just) the substance mix.

Many Order fans were not keen that John Robie had produced a monster epic that contradicted New Order's insular appeal (i.e the Low-Life original) - me thinks he'd crafted a 600ft. half warlock, half goat type god with the power to strike entire continents with a single blow.... unprovoked!

The Muff man just loves to get down to the 12' of Subculture and the original 12' of Confusion, though I suspect i'm not alone when I cum in my panties when the Pump Panel Reconstruction mix from the bloodbath scene in Blade comes on at full throttle in a sweaty club.
the bronze ceremony is the 7", the cream & blue & the green the 12" right? or is that just in the uk? I heard that there was no way of telling which version you had unless you heard it (was re-recorded when gillian joined) as my two cream & blue sleeved 12"s do sound different - not sure if just a mess up in the record shop got them from or if the story i heard was right, but the green sleeve 12" is def the 1st release
Okay, bit confused here. Didn't Steven do the vocals for IALP (the New Order take, at least)? If so, is that him on Substance disc 2, or a rerecorded take with Barney doing his best Ian impersonation?
Have to agree with the Confusion '83 crowd, though Temptation '87 still takes top nods over the original, at least in this country boy's heart (and soul).

No, actually Stephen (with PH) sang one of the versions of Ceremony, but that one was never released (only on demo tape). Both versions of Ceremony (the one with and without Gillian) were sang by Bernard, and In A Lonely Place was sang by him also.
Of course, both of the VERY FIRST VERSIONS were sang by Ian Curtis.

The one sung by Stephen is absolutely awful, so you would know it was him! :D
That happened when the guys were trying to settle who was going to be the next singer after Ian died... and this is also partly why Peter Hook did the lead vocals on two songs on Movement.
Could you imagine Hooky doing the lead vocals on a New Order song these days? Or Gillian? I think it would be interesting, personally.
