Yes - Gillian did play on Blue Monday- and the crowd went mad. No, Bobby Gillespie did not come on stage - and in fact RTS was even better because of this. In fact after the lukewarm reception of th etrack on the album- I bet it will become a crowd favourite at concerts.

There was a female backing singer who appeared for selected tracks only.

Highlights were RTS, Your silent face, Transmission,60MPH, Temptation (possibly the best live version I've heard), the True Faith mix and Ceremony. Touched was probably the low point, as was the fact that Slow Jam was not particularly well received by the crowd - even though the band did a great job on it. The crowd on the whole were outstanding and Hooky in particular played up to his usual strutting self. The new guy Phil fitted in well, and looked like he was having a whale of a time. I cant wait for the Brixton gig next week where rumour has it that there may be some surprise guests... (No turn my way last night although it has been rehearsed). The Joy Division stuff was excellent, although Barney did say something about it being the last time that Atmosphere would be played (I'm not sure if he meant at the Apollo, or in general) Anyway it was a brilliant experience and having seen them about 7 times, I feel it was one of their best gigs(alongside GMEX 88 and Reading 93)People going tonite (and I might just try the touts myself) will definitely love it. It's good to have them back.

No Turn my way-strange considering it's possibly the best from Get Ready. Hopefully by the 11th they'll have realised Slow Jam is cack and replaced it

Just 2 words to describe last night:

FUCKING AMAZING

Well I'm hoping Jarvo and others will back me up on this but I'm afraid to say this gig was a prized turkey. New Order played very well throughout, and the setlist was the stuff of legends, however, the sound levels were absolutely all over the place making nearly every song sound unbalanced. For instance, 'Your Silent Face' - somebody forgot to turn the bass drum on until the final few bars, and the string sounds (i.e. the song) could not be heard!

They started 'Regret', unfortunately, the opening guitar bash/string combo sound didn't appear, only Barney's riff following on its own. Barney, about 3 songs in says: 'Are you having a good time?' Crowd motions a bit. 'Well I'm not, but I'm a moody bastard anyway'.

I seriously thought that he was going to walk off stage he looked so pissed off at how bad the sound was. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' - fucking great, alas, somebody forgot to turn the string sound up and instead, replaced it with a deep drone that pierced the ears spoiling the moment.

Imagine such things throughout the whole gig.

By the time they came on for the encore, the sound had been sorted out, but by that time, to me, the crowd were pretty pissed and the band looked like they really couldn't be arsed. Gillian came on for the final song, 'Blue Monday' - played the small string bit at the end whilst Barney and Hooky finished short and walked off... followed by Stevey the boy Morris.

All in all, what could have been a great gig - excellent set list, amazingly powerful performance, nice added touches with the backing singer... was truly destroyed by a terrible sound balance. Somebody, please, shoot the fucking sound people responsible, that is, if Barney hasn't already.

Set List (from my memory) - I've made a small note next to each song for those who weren't there.

Crystal (Album version - good, bad sound) Transmission Regret (bad sound) Slow Jam (not too good song, bad sound) Your Silent Face (truly ruined by bad sound... made up slightly by Barney's Lasiryn) Ceremony (drums so low Barney kept requesting for them to be lifted - now, has anyone ever seen that before?) Touched by the Hand of God (synths low) Bizarre Love Triangle (Keyboards on chorus could not be heard... bass drum so low spoilt the song) Love Will Tear Us Apart (hideous drone throughout, no string sound) True Faith (Almost a belter) Temptation (Excellent, sound worked out on this) 60MPH (Good, sound okay) Close Range (excellent - sound spot on)

Encore (this is after the sound had been sorted) Ruined in a Day (Excellent) Rock the Fucking Shit House (no comment) Blue Monday (Sound okay, however, band couldn't be arsed AT ALL)

They played a long set, I think I've forgotten some it was that long (about 1 hour 50 mins.!!!!!!)

Okay folks this might sound harsh, but if you asked New Order themselves, they would agree... and if I'm correct, Barney will be livid as much today as he was last night.

For the people who are saying this gig was 'Fucking Amazing' - come on, this gig was poor. Did you not observe Barney's face... he was distraught. The crowd were quiet, simply because they themselves knew the band were having a bad gig.

Look, I'm emotional at the moment and I'm trying to keep a level head. I fucking love the bastards but cannot sit here and not comment how it was, as it is. As it is, when it was and so on.

It could have been an amazing gig. - all I'm saying is that it wasn't, the sound was shite throughout which cacked the whole world up for us all. The fact that they were playing great and the sound wasn't is upsetting... and belive me, I'm still close to tears. Fact is Briggsy, Barney said it last night, he was having a shit night... now if he's agreeing with me don't you think I have a point?

Although I wasnt there, It is good to know that were not so totally brainwashed that we can criticize when it is due. Not that it was the Orders fault.

If people consider watching the band turn to each other, looking as if there's something wrong for an hour and a half, whilst several roadies try and patch up the sound levels a great gig. well that's up to them. Personally, I prefer to see them playing the music and not STOPPING to adjust not only their own levels but other peoples. Barney even walked over to Steve Morris at one point and I imagine he said something like:

"Steve, I can't hear your fucking drums" to which Steve would have replied "That's fuck all, I can't here your guitar or any of the backing keyboards"

There's no real excuse for poor sound quality is there? It's not like it's a shiity little venue or an up and coming band. For your £25 you should at the very least expect it all to be tried and tested before hand. I hope they sort it for the rest of the gigs, and Huntsy, I hope youre there to witness it.

I thought it was a great gig. From where I was, right at the front, there was a tremendous atmosphere. Everyone was up for it bopping all over the place. I agree the sound was sometimes a bit off but I'd had that much 'substance' it didn't seem to matter.

Thanks to Simon Hunter for sending the tickets for what was a great night. I can't wait for Brixton on Wednesday. If anyone knows the band ask them to play 'Sunrise'. I've never heard it live and the opening guitar is pure neworder. And what do you mean 'Rock the Fucking Shit House'? That is a brilliant song.

Well New Order have never been the perfect live band in terms of getting every note right every time; they're not Dire Straits thank god. I thought the sound was mostly ok from where I was standing. Ceremony was just right and so was Atmosphere. A few problems on Blue Monday etc are par for the course and it does not spoil my enjoyment at all. Also Transmission for me was a stormer.

I figured nobody would agree with me. Everyone has their opinions, what can I say. Please realise that I do appreciate the good and bad points of New Order, and appreciate that part of their appeal is when they play bum notes. I'm not talking about how they played, I'm on about the shit sound.

If you were near the front and you do know New Order and their fans, you will have detected a very subdued atmosphere by the crowd. The dissappointment was felt by the very un-rowdy fans. Barney himself was trying to provoke them, which must tell you something!?

As for Ceremony, I'm sorry, but I like Steve Morris to play on that one... did you really think it was a good rendition based on the fact that the drummer couldn't be heard?!!!

My comments on RTS have been noted many times on this site... if I repeat myself I'll be thrown off in a fit of beauty and pleasure.

To tell the truth I was pretty drunk and did not pick up on the finer points of the sound. That coupled with being as excited as a kid on Christmas morning (I almost bought a T-shirt) meant that I was going to find very little fault in whatever happened.

Unfortunately I was driving so couldn't get shitted to enjoy the spectacle. Thing is, I don't think the sound levels were minor faults, I think they were pretty major and cannot remember a New Order gig. where the sound was so all over the place. Given that the band are meant to be now more professional, this was so amateur it was unbelievable. It was, unacceptable. I suppose you did hear Barney apologising after many songs?

Well, I guess I'll largely go along with the dissenters here: the sound was fucking awful; the crowd only really got going during True Faith/Temptation; Your Silent Face and Ceremony (under any other circumstances the highlight of a NO set) were pale imitations of their actual glories, and most of the new stuff fell a bit flat. Again, with the sheer joy of the Olympia still fresh in the memory, this was a bit of a comedown: something similar happened with Reading 98/Xmas Temptation gigs, methinks....

However, I still really enjoyed myself, "Transmission" was pretty damn exciting, and it was great to see Gillian back in "action", though why they persist in playing Blue Monday when they so obviously have nothing but contempt for it is beyond me - do they feel they're obliged to?

Having said that, these things are often hugely subjective: my brother (first NO show) thought the sound was fine ("too loud, if anything" he reckoned), thought the audience were mental (he's a clubber more than a gigger, mind) and said "BM" was the highlight! Someone else mentioned Spike Island - I can only maintain that this notoriously "dodgy" show is still one of the highlights of my life, and bopping away near the front I never noticed the poor sound at all, so, er, go figure....

Finally, one forum member said he was a chunky slaphead and would be wearing an "Area: One" shirt - I guess I saw you at the end (did you have a dark-haired girl with you?): I almost said "hello", but you looked a little "disorientated"!! I also saw someone in a very tasty "Apollo 16" t-shirt - is this from the 98 show???

He reckoned they played Ceremony cos he told them to at the airport. Mind you, there were probably loads fitting that description - myself included (white rugby shirt if anyone spoke to me).

Ill be there on Thursday too. I only live down the road so I feel I can talk with some knowledge and probably at great length about the many drinking establishments that Brixton has to offer. But I wont. Ill be in the Prince Albert on Coldharbour lane, by far one of the most relaxed boozers in the area. Left out of the tube, first left onto Coldharbour lane past the godawful Prince of Wales and a bit further down on the left. The nearest pubs to the Academy are the Beehive, just a run of the mill pub, it sells beer, what more do you need? and theres some big chain pub on the corner, cant remember if its still a Firkin or an O Neills or something?

The support band were nothing short of abismal. Their name was something like the Circus Rats (that's not a joke). The fist song passed and people just stood silent, then, people started to boo which was one of the highlights of the evening. When they finally gave up and went offstage the crowd started to cheer. Total and utter worthless support band I ever did see. What on earth posessed New Order to put these cretins on before them? - I realise they wouldn't have wanted a really good band on but this was shank manky.

The band actually looked like they'd walked off the streets without getting changed. I wished I could convey the lack of any quality but its impossible to put into words. Think 4 students singing The Rocky Horror Picture Show tunes to a Kraftwerk backing with scant regard for musical and clothing taste and your somewhere near.

At the end, they thanked New Order and the management for this opportunity... perhaps they should have poo'd in each others second hand baggy jumpers to give us all a better laugh.

Briggsy, I'm so upset about it I cannot begin to tell you. I've tried, but I have failed. I really really hope that none of you have to go through what we (I?) did last night... I was practically in tears at one stage and my old fella had to prop me up with various lengths of wood. The only thing keeping me from committing suicide in the comfort of the disabled toilet cubicle area at work is the reassurance that last nights debacle/fiasco/dog fest of untold proportions cannot coneivably be repeated in our lifetime. The probabilities are too miniscule. It would be like the chances of an asteroid striking Hooky on the conk at the beginning of Atmospheric Conditions.

For the forthcoming shows, god be with you all... he left us all last night to the mercy of one man, and that man at the controls must have been in some way related to the legendary near-sighted Steven Wonder. Why a wolf-hound could have manouvered the sound levels with more dexterity and precision.

I think Huntsman's a Douglas Sirk fan. Yeah, it was a mess in places, but not quite as bad as you're making out, fella!! Personally, I got my £25's worth during the hectic True Faith/Temptation readings. So delirious, in fact, that I can still literally ring the moisture out of last night's clobber.

Or perhaps I'm just a sweaty git.....

Just to clarify... it wasn't bad... it just wasn't as good as previous people were posting. My hang-up is with the bad sound, nothing else. Half-a-Bakers Dozen and the support band were most entertaining... Hooky was certainly on form... leaning over to the crowd and playing bass behind his back (nice).

I don't know who this Dougie is either.On the subject of literature I've just finished only the third book I've read since school, 'The Catcher In The Rye'.My review is as follows.Not much happens, a teacher pats him on the head while he's asleep,don't get me wrong, this would spook me aswell, but if I was to write about it I wouldn't expect someone to shoot John Lennon.The rest of the themes explored seem to revolve around childhood, how precious an innocent view of the world is,and that writing 'fuck you' in public view isn't that respectful to children.Alternatively you could probably read it yourself in about 6 hours, as i did, and as said i've not practised reading that much.

As for NO live shows, and I've seen a few, again, the sound is never going to be CD quality. It was the experience which made it so good. As for the crowd not being up for it - it is notoriously difficult in the Apollo - but the fact that there was nearly a crush at the front and Barney's warning to calm down shows you what the atmosphere at the front was like. I am going to one of the London shows as well to compare the different venues, but I am sorely tempted to go again tonite to get another taste of the Apollo.

Most people thought the experience was worth it. The band played well - even if the sound was poor - but that's something that many NO fans have seen before.

Your right, I haven't been to the Apollo before... but if the sound was crap why didn't the lazy bastards rectify this? - after all, that's what we're paying to hear isn't it? - I mean, you don't go to see a film and watch it with a filthy screen and go, oh fuck it, it'll do.

New Order can play well, and they can play crap and have the same effect. Last night was tanrished by the sound levels - truth be told the warm-up band had a better sound!... now if they had a better mix what the fucks going on there?!... don't give me this oh well malarky its New Order so its okay.

I was at the front of the stage, and the only thing crushed was the few pringles I smuggled in. As for Barney being off his head, he looked very much 'serious' to me. I've seen him off his tits before and he was just pissed off last night... he fucking told us so! (am I the only person here that thinks this way?).

Anyway, I've said enough and I'm probably boring everyone to death. Good gig, bad sound, end of story... here's to the other gigs being first class.

Here is the review of last night's gig from the local paper (Manchester Evening News):

   Rock legends return - New Order 

WE hope you enjoy it, mused Bernard Sumner as New Order, the city’s most enduring musical export and probably its most influential, took the stage for their first home-town gig for nearly three years. It would have been impossible for anyone in the sell-out house not to have enjoyed it.

They haven’t changed much New Order were always the rock band dance fans liked and the dance act rock fans could get into but at the same time, they have, which explains why the audience comprised as many 40-somethings who remember them first time round as it did 20-somethings.

With former Marion man Phil Cunningham standing in for Gillian Gilbert on keyboards and guitar, that was also the case on stage.

The new album Get Ready is a bit mixed, but it does include a few gems. One such is Crystal, which kicked off the show. Its thumping bass-line allowed the leonine Peter Hook, whose bass is so low-slung these days it scrapes the floor, to show off his idiosyncratic playing style.

Whereas most bands treat gigs as a chance to showcase the new stuff, New Order, as they get older, are exhuming more and more of the Joy Division back catalogue, with a suitably sombre Transmission being the pick.

But what everyone wanted to hear were the New Order classics. Bizarre Love Triangle received a curious acid house treatment which didn’t quite come off, while Touched by the Hand of God was touched instead by a dollop of funk which sounded little more than work-in-progress.

The highlight was unquestionably a majestic True Faith, with Temptation a close second. They could only finish the gig with one track, and a triumphant Blue Monday for which Gillian appeared duly concluded the show.

Encouraging that the author 'almost' told it like it was... acid house Bizarre Love Triangle?... what could he hear the synths? - maybe he was sat with a pair of headphones on playing Substance in his car outside.

Calm down Huntsy-boy; i know that you didn't enjoy the horrid sound levels last night, and hopefully that won't happen again this evening. As for the synths on Bacon Lettuce Tomato, I could hear them down the front (albeit very faintly). And before you ask, NO I wasn't even the mildest bit tipsy, nor on any other substances. I posted that review in order to pass on the comments to fellow Orderlineusers, as you've just prattled on all day about how poor the sound was last night. Martin, I think I'd have to agree that I am melodramatic. Just ask Hooky Monster (he's right). In fact, my bird says I'm too dramatic with everything I do... truth be told I can't even make a cup of tea without making a song and dance about it and going on for ages about the colour of the milk etc. etc.

(perhaps its best I'm not going to anymore gigs in the near future)

Huntsy, I didn't mean that you prattle on; I merely used that word as it was the first one that came into my empty head, and it seemed to fit nicely. I apologise for the mis-use of it. There's absolutely zero chance of that happening HM, no posts of mine have any malice or bad intentions directed towards anyone... for example, it was only a couple of days ago I was defending you to the hilt in the Muff/Monster incident.

Basically, I'm a pretty emotional person and take things to the extreme. For what its worth, my old fella (who's a proper muso) thought the rendition of 'Temptation' kicked arse and just to be there to witness the Order live took his breath away... which wasn't bad as we'd both just consumed a tube of the good stuff.

Just some fucker get to the rest of the gigs and give us all some more reports eh and we'll all be happy... good or bad, bring 'em on.

(I am jealous that I've already had my chips so soon on the tour... but that's life).

jarvo was indeed the one with the dark haired girl. hooky monster - was it you in the leather jacket down the front? must have been a bit hot mate! after having to wear my coat at the liverpool show went in t shirt only for this one & it was sweltering.

agree that barney looked pissed off, but only really noticed that after the reception that rts got - fell flat from where i was (centre stage 3 rows back) 2 people in front of me were bouncing & trying to get it going but it just wasnt happening. missed the little things that made the songs great in terms of the subtler keyboard fills & "swirls" etc, but the energy worked for me (eg steves drumming on transmission) ceremony was indeed dedicated to jarvo & his crew as they had requested it at every airport on the american tour - barney was hard to hear when speaking between songs but did catch him saying that it was for the people that followed them around america asking them to play it. would ignore comments that it is the last time they will play atmosphere (unless they were referring to the video board game atmosfear), have heard a rumour it will be the same set every night.

Don't get me wrong I'm 19, and am glad to have seen New Order while they're still going, they are easily one of the best bands this country has produced and to see the guys live on stage was excellent. BUT, the sound in my opinion made the gig average rather than amazing. In particular Bernard's guitar was more or less inaudiable and this hindered the get ready tracks, Hooky's bass also suffered, however Steve showed what a truly class drummer he is and only on Atmosphere did the sound cause problems. I would also have to say that the re-jigged tracks such as true faith and TBTHOG did not impress me the original live versions at Glastonbury '87 sound far superior particulary true faith [the first time they played it].

I dont want to brag Huntsy- but having sen Barney before the gig he was off his tits - not serious as you said. This was a fantatic NO gig - but if you have only seen a couple that's where the problem lies - Barney was totally crazy- not serious. But we'll see tomorrow

It was my first NO gig on thursday, i enjoyed it, but im tending to agree with the opinion it was not a great gig. But after such a long time away, why expect miracles? Lets agree that after this tour the band will be back into the swing of touring, and it can only get better. why not?

Bloody hell, there are some real voices of doom here, Im glad I didnt read these reviews until now, otherwise i'd have topped meself and missed this evenings stonking efforts!

Personally, I fucking loved it, and before anyone says it, i'll say it first....it's probably because im a girl and dont understand the technical things.... *giggle*

i just remember the good ol days when gillian would be with them full time. i don't like it where she just makes appearences for certain songs. does anyone else notice that hooky always has problems with his drum pad? he uses it mainly for one song(blue monday). you would think they could get it working for just one song.

By far the best was of course Reading 93, but any gig they play , no matter what sound quality, has always been brilliant. Now , i have not been to the manch. concerts but i am sure these two were also rememberable ones. Just be glad you where still in the opportunity in the year 2001! to see some of the last music legends ever. I will be going to the Brixton 12th concert and fucking hell i already know now it is going to be great.

Mario, after last night's performance I'm sure you'll have nothing to moan about by the time your Brixton gig comes around. Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed last night. I've not got any moans or complaints about last night; apart from the fact that i've opened up the stitches in my wound which was operated on last week. But fook it, New Order were well worth it :D

I was right at the back and most of it sounded okay from there, some songs spoilt by the sound (your silent face, tbthog) but the rest okay. Transmission played too early imho. You can usually rely on the Order to fuck some somgs up but I thought the playing was the tightest I'd heard for many an aeon.

I can't believe what I have just read, I was right up at the front and the gig rocked, the band were pure, raw, genius! What were some of you expecting? a fucking Celine Dion concert or something? I hear her technicians work wonders to give her shows that plastic, clinical sound! I much prefer to hear new order (faults and all)O.K its a shame the venue has the accoustics of a public toilet but WTF!

Maybe some people were a bit pissed off because they had to be surgically removed from their computers for a few hours, but I haven't seen New order in years, and yeah I'd rather listen to them busking in a subway than listen to all this negative crap!

Ok I'm new here, I tend to use my PC as a tool rather than a part of my body, and quite frankly I can take it or leave it.
