Wicked show, I'm still high. Definately one of their better live shows, and the highlight? surely its got the be the airing of TRANSMISSION. Wicked man!

Yes - Gillian did play on Blue Monday- and the crowd went mad. No, Bobby Gillespie did not come on stage - and in fact RTS was even better because of this. In fact after the lukewarm reception of th etrack on the album- I bet it will become a crowd favourite at concerts.

There was a female backing singer who appeared for selected tracks only.

Highlights were RTS, Your silent face, Transmission,60MPH, Temptation (possibly the best live version I've heard), the True Faith mix and Ceremony. Touched was probably the low point, as was the fact that Slow Jam was not particularly well received by the crowd - even though the band did a great job on it. The crowd on the whole were outstanding and Hooky in particular played up to his usual strutting self. The new guy Phil fitted in well, and looked like he was having a whale of a time. I cant wait for the Brixton gig next week where rumour has it that there may be some surprise guests... (No turn my way last night although it has been rehearsed). The Joy Division stuff was excellent, although Barney did say something about it being the last time that Atmosphere would be played (I'm not sure if he meant at the Apollo, or in general) Anyway it was a brilliant experience and having seen them about 7 times, I feel it was one of their best gigs(alongside GMEX 88 and Reading 93)People going tonite (and I might just try the touts myself) will definitely love it. It's good to have them back.

No Turn my way-strange considering it's possibly the best from Get Ready. Hopefully by the 11th they'll have realised Slow Jam is cack and replaced it

Just 2 words to describe last night:

FUCKING AMAZING

Well I'm hoping Jarvo and others will back me up on this but I'm afraid to say this gig was a prized turkey. New Order played very well throughout, and the setlist was the stuff of legends, however, the sound levels were absolutely all over the place making nearly every song sound unbalanced. For instance, 'Your Silent Face' - somebody forgot to turn the bass drum on until the final few bars, and the string sounds (i.e. the song) could not be heard!

They started 'Regret', unfortunately, the opening guitar bash/string combo sound didn't appear, only Barney's riff following on its own. Barney, about 3 songs in says: 'Are you having a good time?' Crowd motions a bit. 'Well I'm not, but I'm a moody bastard anyway'.

I seriously thought that he was going to walk off stage he looked so pissed off at how bad the sound was. 'Love Will Tear Us Apart' - fucking great, alas, somebody forgot to turn the string sound up and instead, replaced it with a deep drone that pierced the ears spoiling the moment.

Imagine such things throughout the whole gig.

By the time they came on for the encore, the sound had been sorted out, but by that time, to me, the crowd were pretty pissed and the band looked like they really couldn't be arsed. Gillian came on for the final song, 'Blue Monday' - played the small string bit at the end whilst Barney and Hooky finished short and walked off... followed by Stevey the boy Morris.

All in all, what could have been a great gig - excellent set list, amazingly powerful performance, nice added touches with the backing singer... was truly destroyed by a terrible sound balance. Somebody, please, shoot the fucking sound people responsible, that is, if Barney hasn't already.

Set List (from my memory) - I've made a small note next to each song for those who weren't there.

Crystal (Album version - good, bad sound) Transmission Regret (bad sound) Slow Jam (not too good song, bad sound) Your Silent Face (truly ruined by bad sound... made up slightly by Barney's Lasiryn) Ceremony (drums so low Barney kept requesting for them to be lifted - now, has anyone ever seen that before?) Touched by the Hand of God (synths low) Bizarre Love Triangle (Keyboards on chorus could not be heard... bass drum so low spoilt the song) Love Will Tear Us Apart (hideous drone throughout, no string sound) True Faith (Almost a belter) Temptation (Excellent, sound worked out on this) 60MPH (Good, sound okay) Close Range (excellent - sound spot on)

Encore (this is after the sound had been sorted) Ruined in a Day (Excellent) Rock the Fucking Shit House (no comment) Blue Monday (Sound okay, however, band couldn't be arsed AT ALL)

They played a long set, I think I've forgotten some it was that long (about 1 hour 50 mins.!!!!!!)

Okay folks this might sound harsh, but if you asked New Order themselves, they would agree... and if I'm correct, Barney will be livid as much today as he was last night.

For the people who are saying this gig was 'Fucking Amazing' - come on, this gig was poor. Did you not observe Barney's face... he was distraught. The crowd were quiet, simply because they themselves knew the band were having a bad gig.

Look, I'm emotional at the moment and I'm trying to keep a level head. I fucking love the bastards but cannot sit here and not comment how it was, as it is. As it is, when it was and so on.

It could have been an amazing gig. - all I'm saying is that it wasn't, the sound was shite throughout which cacked the whole world up for us all. The fact that they were playing great and the sound wasn't is upsetting... and belive me, I'm still close to tears. Fact is Briggsy, Barney said it last night, he was having a shit night... now if he's agreeing with me don't you think I have a point?

Sorry, but the Huntsbag has to speak the truth... even if no-one else is.

And to answer your question... yes, I'll be seeing them again as soon as I can (i.e. with any luck on this tour).

Although I wasnt there, It is good to know that were not so totally brainwashed that we can criticize when it is due. Not that it was the Orders fault.

If people consider watching the band turn to each other, looking as if there's something wrong for an hour and a half, whilst several roadies try and patch up the sound levels a great gig. well that's up to them. Personally, I prefer to see them playing the music and not STOPPING to adjust not only their own levels but other peoples. Barney even walked over to Steve Morris at one point and I imagine he said something like:

"Steve, I can't hear your fucking drums" to which Steve would have replied "That's fuck all, I can't here your guitar or any of the backing keyboards"

All I'm trying to say is that what could have been a dream gig was tarnished by bad, really bad sound levels. My views on the actual band are no different... I fucking love 'em all.

Similarly to Facs I appreciate you being honest Huntsminoan. I was wondering whether you were going to any of the Brixton gigs?

There's no real excuse for poor sound quality is there? It's not like it's a shiity little venue or an up and coming band. For your £25 you should at the very least expect it all to be tried and tested before hand. I hope they sort it for the rest of the gigs, and Huntsy, I hope youre there to witness it.

I thought it was a great gig. From where I was, right at the front, there was a tremendous atmosphere. Everyone was up for it bopping all over the place. I agree the sound was sometimes a bit off but I'd had that much 'substance' it didn't seem to matter.

Thanks to Simon Hunter for sending the tickets for what was a great night. I can't wait for Brixton on Wednesday. If anyone knows the band ask them to play 'Sunrise'. I've never heard it live and the opening guitar is pure neworder. And what do you mean 'Rock the Fucking Shit House'? That is a brilliant song.

Well New Order have never been the perfect live band in terms of getting every note right every time; they're not Dire Straits thank god. I thought the sound was mostly ok from where I was standing. Ceremony was just right and so was Atmosphere. A few problems on Blue Monday etc are par for the course and it does not spoil my enjoyment at all. Also Transmission for me was a stormer.

I figured nobody would agree with me. Everyone has their opinions, what can I say. Please realise that I do appreciate the good and bad points of New Order, and appreciate that part of their appeal is when they play bum notes. I'm not talking about how they played, I'm on about the shit sound.

If you were near the front and you do know New Order and their fans, you will have detected a very subdued atmosphere by the crowd. The dissappointment was felt by the very un-rowdy fans. Barney himself was trying to provoke them, which must tell you something!?

As for Ceremony, I'm sorry, but I like Steve Morris to play on that one... did you really think it was a good rendition based on the fact that the drummer couldn't be heard?!!!

My comments on RTS have been noted many times on this site... if I repeat myself I'll be thrown off in a fit of beauty and pleasure.

To tell the truth I was pretty drunk and did not pick up on the finer points of the sound. That coupled with being as excited as a kid on Christmas morning (I almost bought a T-shirt) meant that I was going to find very little fault in whatever happened.

Unfortunately I was driving so couldn't get shitted to enjoy the spectacle. Thing is, I don't think the sound levels were minor faults, I think they were pretty major and cannot remember a New Order gig. where the sound was so all over the place. Given that the band are meant to be now more professional, this was so amateur it was unbelievable. It was, unacceptable. I suppose you did hear Barney apologising after many songs?

You've got to call it how you see it, having had, what I had hoped would have been one of the highlights of my life, let down by totally shit sound, at Spike Island,I know where you're coming from.That was the only Stone Roses gig i ever got to.Imagine if that was your only chance To see NO.Some fans from somewhere remote could have been saving for years.

As soon as a decent review comes out I'm posting it to show you I'm not the only one who thinks this.

Well, I guess I'll largely go along with the dissenters here: the sound was fucking awful; the crowd only really got going during True Faith/Temptation; Your Silent Face and Ceremony (under any other circumstances the highlight of a NO set) were pale imitations of their actual glories, and most of the new stuff fell a bit flat. Again, with the sheer joy of the Olympia still fresh in the memory, this was a bit of a comedown: something similar happened with Reading 98/Xmas Temptation gigs, methinks....

However, I still really enjoyed myself, "Transmission" was pretty damn exciting, and it was great to see Gillian back in "action", though why they persist in playing Blue Monday when they so obviously have nothing but contempt for it is beyond me - do they feel they're obliged to?

Having said that, these things are often hugely subjective: my brother (first NO show) thought the sound was fine ("too loud, if anything" he reckoned), thought the audience were mental (he's a clubber more than a gigger, mind) and said "BM" was the highlight! Someone else mentioned Spike Island - I can only maintain that this notoriously "dodgy" show is still one of the highlights of my life, and bopping away near the front I never noticed the poor sound at all, so, er, go figure....

Finally, one forum member said he was a chunky slaphead and would be wearing an "Area: One" shirt - I guess I saw you at the end (did you have a dark-haired girl with you?): I almost said "hello", but you looked a little "disorientated"!! I also saw someone in a very tasty "Apollo 16" t-shirt - is this from the 98 show???
