Well, there's four of us. There's me, the keyboard player, there's Tom, the lead guitarist, there's John, the bassist and we haven't even found a drummer yet.
Our school is doing a battle of the bands, and for fun we are going to enter. I have put the idea forward of playing this classic and told them it would be easy to learn to play, but is it? Any of you with experience playing this song have any advice?
Also, how the hell do I play the melody to the chorus? Help.........
Not that hard really unless you're planning to sound just like "that" band - listen to the SWANS version and you'll surely impress if you can crack that one...replace the female vocal with a reed or healthy string sample/synth patch.
Well, we've agreed to play LWTUA. Any advice to me, as the keyboard player. I'm a complete novice to this, embarrassing I know, but I really have no idea how to play the melody that happens when "Love....love will tear us apart" is sang. If anyone can help me....I'd much appreciate it.

hey, I know how to play that part also, but i need to be in front of the keyboard to remember the notes,
the verse part is just going back and forth through a few notes, i dont play keys so i dont know which ones but play along with the song for a while and you will figure it out make sure to turn up the bass player really really LOUD!,LOL

i've never played the song. but when i watch the LWTUA video, i notice barney doesn't play the black keys. maybe that's a hint to figuring it out.:D
No black keys means it's probably in the key of C. Our band used to play it, but I can't remember the key (even though I played the keys for it). We did it exactly like the 12" version, so our drummer didn't do all of the rumbling toms that Stephen Morris does live and on the 7". It's really not a hard song. Just make sure your bass player is wearing his bass real low so he/she can get the attitude right to play the song.
Make sure you have a good string tone on your keys. It would be terribly ear piercing if the pitch is too high.
We also managed to play a good version of Guilty Partner, Ceremony and Perfect Kiss w/ a nice drum machine too. My old band during high school were such New Order freaks.

If only kids in my high school were New Order freaks too, it would've broughten out the dormant New Order freak in me too....so many wasted years :(

Very simple song, but to play it like JD or NO you need a good drummer. Or a good drum programmer.
I've had a bass for 2 weeks, i can play LWTUA...
... but only at about 1 tenth the speed of the CD....
Let's face it, JD wrote it and were able to play it, so it can't be that complicated ! Like with everything, practice makes perfect. Keep it coming !
If it is in the key of C, the melody (played by the bass, keys and sung; it's not a masterpiece of arranging for a group) would be like this:

with the A and G being in the octave below the C, of course. The verses are 12 bars each; keyboard part on the verse is simply
c (2,3,4) g(2,3,4) c(an octave up) (2,3,4) g(2,3,4) then those 4 bars repeat: c (2,3,4) g(2,3,4) c(an octave up) (2,3,4) g(2,3,4) with the last 4 being a little different: c(2,3,4) g (2,3,4) f(2,3,4) c(an octave up) (2,3,4)
hold down the C for the entire 12 bars for the verse, the other notes come in as outlined above.
when the G7 chord as used in the beginning comes back again near the end (it is used as the intro and bridge) being played by the guitar, the keyboard part is d and g (ascending). Then when the G7 chord stops for the last past where the song fades out, the keyboard goes to c and g (ascending), holding those notes down together.
I'm going by memory here but I'm pretty sure this is right. 'Round Midnight' it ain't. Of course if it is another key when JD did it all of it is wrong, but there's no reason you couldn't play it in C anyway for your cover.
No offense, but if you can't get that together, you may have not yet attained the level of mediocrity ! Nobody should have any trouble except maybe the drummer.

Try this: run the video a frame at a time, write down the keys Barney's playing, then find them at a piano, and you've got the melody for the bass and keyboard. That's how I learned to play LWTUA on bass, and it was probably the only song that I've ever played properly. I haven't tried, but the same should apply to the lead guitar. I can't help you with the drums though.
A foolproof idea from our Croatian friend save for the fact that the video runs a bar behind for most of its' duration - check the edit on Hooks bass near the end of the track - that's NOT there for efffect folks - that was a quick fix to bring the track back into time for the final chorus....if you get the chance check out the Australian version of the video with the real sound - brilliant!
