does anybody like it? i kind of do. ...and i find it extremely funny that all the action is at least 2secs behind the song. and the drum-fills in the video aren't nearly close to those of the song. its very sloppy, yet cool at the same time. the opening and closing of the door at the start is nice, too.

Agreed. First saw the end of this late at night on MTV. Saw quick montage of Hooky, Ian, Steve and a young Barney with that JD cut. I'd say that's the moment I began to investigate JD a lot more.
Well, I´ve got the original video which joy division plays it live.But there were some troubles with Ian´s voice and he had to go back to studio.
The problem with the video stems from the fact that they have dubbed the studio version over the top of them playing it live, which was always more akin to the Pennine version on the b-side. As you can clearly see, it doesn't work terribly well...
I always find it kind of creepy when the person opening the door with "Ian C" scratched into it disappears. I like it though. I don't like most of the newest videos where the action in the video has nothing to do with the song. A "live" performance is the most legitimate video direction.
That video was a pleasant surprise at the end of the HATYM video, and it's always been one of my favorites. Also love the Atmosphere video that was done in '88.
I still prefer the unsyncronized version. It's always laughable, particularly Steve's drumming. 
According to "Pleasures And Wayward Distractions" book, this video was first aired on Tiswas, a Saturday morning children show. Does someone in the UK used to watch it?
a great 'tiswas' story is lemmy from motorhead lighting up a joint on the show. would never happen on 'sesame street', that's for sure (biggest 'rock moment' on that show was when crosby, stills and nash sang 'we all live in a capital 'I')!

The hand opening the door on "Love Will Tear Us Apart" video is a clear reference to "The Enchanted Hand", a famous photograph by Ralph Gibson, published in his 1970 book "The Somnambulist". This picture is also in the "Unknown Pleasures" booklet (at least the vinyl versions as the CD I own doesn't have it).

Did you know that Graham Nash went to the same school as Barney and Hooky? Is that why you mentioned it?
there´s this booklet inlay in my unknown pleasures vinyl.but I think it´s reffering to disorder lyrics : "I´ve been waiting for a guide to come and take me by the hand" which is the song which opens the album.

Tiswas was ITV's Saturday morning anarchy for kids (I could describe it but you had toi be there) from about 1975 to 1981 or so, presented by Chris Tarrant and Sally James and was the excellent rival to the BBC's much more traditional (ie Boring) Swap Shop with Noel Edmonds.
However I dont think the Tiswas story is correct, I am sure that the video was first aired on Fun Factory on a Saturday morning (made for ITV by Granada TV for whom Tony Wilson used to read the news).
This fact has stuck with me all these years as the presenter introduced the clip something like;
"Now a video from Joy Division who are not a female singer, they're a group".
I don't know about other country's MTVs, but MTV Brazil shows kind of advertises of "music evolution" of a few themes like "blondes" (5 seconds of Nelson, 5 sec of Skid Row, 5 of Silverchair and 5 of Hanson), "Eddie Vedder Institute" (Pearl Jam, Stone Temple Pilots, Nixons, Creed), "Michael Jackson" in his phases, as well as "David Bowie" and other boring subjects. But one of those themes took my attention: "Masochists" theme uses to start with JD and LWTUA, then it goes to The Cure ("A Night Like This"), The Smiths ("The Boy With The Thorn...") and finishes with Radiohead ("Fake Plastic Trees"). Is it made up by MTV Brazil or not?
Anyway, Love Will Tear Us Apart is a great video, mostly for its remarkable unsynchronization (I think it was proposital, 'cos they actually could do it better).

Another version exists using the live sound (they weren't miming). On this version, only the vocals are a bit out of sync with the visuals. Apparently the live vocal didn't record well so they dubbed in Ian from the record.
