Peter Hooks Bass Guitars and Bass Effects

Hi Folks

This may have been asked many times before but can anyone give me a list of the effects Hooky uses on his bass and possibly a list of bass guitars he uses (apart from the Rickenbacker)?

he actually used a replica rickenbacker, i forget which company made it(ibanez made one at the time), he also used a yamaha BB1200(AS SEEN IN THE LWTUA AND PERFECT KISS VIDEOS), and starting around the republic era he used a music man stingray 5 string bass on a few of the songs(everyone everywhere comes to mind) i have never been able to find out exactly which effects pedals he used, but i notice he uses am ampeg head more recently

The Ric copy was an Electra. Those old Electras are really well made, with set necks and full herringbone binding like the real ones, the pickups are higher output than the originals but they look like the old horseshoe/toaster style ones.

This page (http://members.aol.com/lwtua/c1979.htm) has a quote from a guy that says he saw Hooky break the neck on that bass on Sept 28 '79 when JD played the Factory.

I just noticed on the photos from Jan 17 '80 at www.newwavephotos.com that you can see a repair on the back of the neck of that bass near the headstock (a common place for the neck to break):

This picture also serves to prove that it isn't a real Ric because they used open geared tuning machines, not the small enclosed ones like you can see on Hooky's bass, which I have seen on every old Japanese Ric copy I have run across.

On this pic you can see what may be a chorus pedal (but it could be something else, hard to say) on his rig. It's interesting that he used a Vox 2 x 15 cab for that show, maybe it was rented locally as I don't recall him using those any other time (going by pics, I wasn't there). Nice hairdo.

on second thought, that could also be a capo on the bass.

Wow! I always thought it was an original Rick' - I'm about to purchase an original at great expense - and I knew about the Yamaha but I was never keen on it as it looks a bit cheap!

The effects remain a mystery though.......

I have heard that Hooky used an old Electro-Harmonix Polychorus in the JD days, but I have no hard evidence to support that and it came through the grapevine. I doubt the particular model of chorus would make much difference as long as it is analog and not too hi fi.

AFAIK the Yamaha in the Perfect Kiss Video is not the same as the BB 1200 he was using during Joy Division. The BB has a see-through pickguard and an ash body with a kind of sunburst finish. The later Yamaha had a kind of red finish. I guess it was a BB 2000 or BB 5000 - the guy from oops "No Doubt" is using them these days. IIRC all of New Orders Equipment was stolen in the early 80ies out of a truck. Those Yamahas were nice instruments. The BB 1200 is a kind of Precision copy with a neck through body construction. Very heavy indeed. Some things I can remember: Hook used digital delays very early. He used and is still using an Alembic PB-1 Preamp (not too sure about the model number). In Joy Division he always used mostly overdriven tube amps (Hiwatt for small venues, Marshalls for the bigger ones). He had at least one 18" speaker. Maybe he had other speakers too, but this was uncommon then. Dirk

yeah those older yamahas are heavy as hell but they sound great, and if it wasnt for the popularity of that no doubt loser using them and praising them, you would probably have been able to pick up a bb1200 at a great price i notice also that hooky used to have a tremolo bar on his eccleshall in the mid-late 80's, but i never really saw it used beautiful basses
