Just spoke to Brasco on the phone Major, aparently he's a bit pissed.....this was his idea of a wind up thread

'87 last truly great singles and gigs. Given us hope with Get Ready, cantankerous bastards might still throw a spanner in the works and surprise us, then again it probably wouldn't be that much of a surprise.
I agree - 1987 was their last truly great year.
Personally speaking 1986 was the New Order year.
I think they still have good stuff left in them. I'm not writing them off yet.

We already got that discussion once.
For me, their career peak is, of course, World In Motion, hit the #1, then it was all trouble and the downfall of the band, side-projects and everything.
But their real peak was Technique, they went to Ibiza to do this record and took 2 years to do it, and it's the best thing they ever done (even if 24HPP shows that they caused trouble to Factory by doing this)...
Then, 1990->1998 is the dark era, Republic was not a collective work, it was Stephen Hague's project of solo New Order parts, even it created at least one classic with Regret.
But well, to be honest, the peak of New Order came with the downfall of Factory...!
old chaos has reached rock-bottom? I suppose one can always make a statement with a question mark behind it but does it make sense? You never know what happened the other day! Tomorrow, that is.
Hm, '87 would be a good cutoff point, I suppose, but I think they've still got another classic in 'em (Get Ready was proof of that)
World in Motion was a mix of 'high point' (New Order hits #1) and 'low point' (with a terrible song) :D

They've pleasantly surprised us so many times before, I think they'll do it again.
they still have good stuff in them, otherwise we wouldnt be posting here every day, of course they have peaked but they havent declined to the point where they arent making any good music in fact they arent even close to that point

This is the most articulate and accurate comment of the bunch. Does the band still have it? Well, I think the next album will be decisive in its revelation and answer all these questions. I sure hope so.
1985 is when they peaked with 'the perfect kiss' as the best song..
1983-4 with the 'power corruption and lies' as the best album..

In terms of their popularity then the mid 80's would have to be their peak. In terms of quality of music then I'd have to say they're still going strong. Crystal, Here To Stay and Primitive Notion are up there with some of the best stuff they've made.

I don't agree that 1993 was a live peak. I saw 2 shows that year and feel they were just going through the motions. It was obvious that they weren't getting along with each other (especially Barney) and that just killed their onstage chemistry. Say what you want about their most recent shows/tours (static setlist complaints, etc.) but at least they're enjoying themselves again.
I loved the 1989 shows I attended but would put their "live ability" peak at 1987. They weren't taking long breaks between tours so they still had their "chops". Confidence in their playing ability allowed them to draw from a larger pool of songs. Take a look at setlists from 1987 and compare them to the lack of variety in the 1993 shows and you'll see what I'm getting at.
I'm with you on the album peak though.
"1998" of course.Best set-list and perfomance.I love listening to Joy Division songs by them.
i've got to agree with mick on this one. i think they've demonstrated their staying power over and over again.
...i'm just glad they haven't pulled a stevie wonder. you know, made excellent music of vast importance for years and then all of a sudden turned into complete and utter crap overnight!
