Ever have one of those songs that you listen to and think "God, that was a bloody mess...", but continue trying to get into? Then after a few plays, you give up and decide you just might never like the song? And then after gathering a few pounds of dust, you decide to give it one more go, and are blown away at how great it is? Well, I have. A few examples would be Age Of Consent, Brutal, Love Vigilantes, Temptation and Such A Good Thing.

It took me a good few listens of Joy Division till I was turned on, New Order wise, I'd have to say that after buying PC&L and hearing Substance when I was 12 / 13, the song that disgusted me the most on the first few plays was Touched By The Hand Of God, I remember buying it from a newsagents, I'm sure a few of you will remember the wee record racks that spun round and contained (mostly crap) singles, well I got Touched for 79p and when I first played it I thought it was a different New Order (I kid you not) mainly because it was so different from everything else I had heard from the band, I'm happy to say it didn't take too long to begin to appreciate the bands diversity. It was the same with The Stone Roses' first album that also took several plays at different periodsof time.
Love Vigilantes.
i used to LOATHE that song, and now it blows my mind every time i even think about it.
same with Age of Consent and anything on Technique.
now that i think about it, i used to dislike the majority of my now-favorite bands. i actually sold my first Joy Division CD (Substance), and now they're my all-time favorite band. i was that way with most of New Order, The Cure, Depeche Mode, and Skinny Puppy, too.
my top five favorite bands:
- Joy Division; only liked LWTUA at first, could take or leave the rest. now i LOVE literally every song.
- The Jesus & Mary Chain; i actually loved them from the start.
- New Order; only really liked Blue Monday and True Faith at first. now i love dozens of their songs.
- The Cure; didn't like them that much at first, and then i fell in love with them.
- Skinny Puppy; they used to be far too harsh for me (i guess i was far too frail), and i actually really disliked them. now i LOVE them so much.

(1) Sunrise - I just did not get that song when I first heard Low Life in May 1985.
Then I saw/heard it done live, and revisited Low Life, and all became clear :)
(2) Ultraviolence - I recently dusted off PCL, and found myself swinging along to it for the first time and thinking "man, I've totally misunderstood this song for all this time" - it just sorta clicked :)
As for songs that I now like but didn't use to : We All Stand 
Still hate: World In Motion, Shellshock 
I didn't like Ceremony when I 1st bought Substance. Now I love it & it blows my mind played live.
I have also grown to appreciate: Run Wild, SATG, Brutal & In a Lonely Place.
I 1st loved Blue Monday but now can only bear either the Hardfloor95 version or played live at a gig.
All the more techno-y stuff. It would appear that I'm the opposite of a lot of folks here. I took to Joy Division on first listen, along with Age of Consent, Love Vigilantes, Ceremony, Leave Me Alone, and pretty much anything like that. But Blue Monday, Confusion, and the like took forever to appreciate, years even. Fine Time absolutely grated when it came out, but now I love it.
My historic attitude problem:
The first time I listened to Technique I thought it was crap. I Was very dissapointed at first. It took me a few months to start enjoying it.
I had to put Republic on the shelf for a year or two to better enjoy this album as a whole.
Actually, I don't think I've ever had that experience! I can't think of anything I didn't like and didn't continue to dislike.
What usually happens is I dislike something, think maybe It'll grow on me, and find it that it doesn't.
Though the only NO numbers I dislike that I can remember would be we all stand and shellshock. And maybe much of movement.
