Poll Status In This Forum

I do not mind them as long as they're used with some restraint. Possibly one poll per day is enough. A polls only forum...well, I don't think many people would visit it.

i think if someone replies to a poll through the resources link, there's no need to bring it automatically back onto the forum. however, i don't have a problem with the polls in general. i find them quite entertaining, as long as they're used in moderation!

Why not a place in their own forum? We are always doing polls, and they're great, but sometimes the forum collapses.

As probably one of the worst abusers of the poll option (by my own admission, "Best Mustache?" was a waste of everyone's time ), I understand how annoying an abundance of polls can be. I agree with the "one poll a day" suggestion, but if push comes to shove a seperate forum would be okay by me.

Or just LEAVE Tabsy!

How's this for a compromise ? Only the moderators can start polls in this forum, and all other polls could go into their own forum.

I don't mind them, I think they're fun :)

But if some people feel it's becoming an issue, then limiting everyone's poll quota to one a day seems reasonable.

Allowing only certain users to post smacks of elitism and would take away from the community spirit of the forum.

One poll per day should be a solution in a first step. Let's see how it goes, and eventualy create a polls forum later.

i fancy the idea of a forum specifically for polls. i know i would visit it just as often as the thread one. i heart polls. :)

Like our esteemed prime minister, I rarely listen to the polls these days.

It's symptomatic of the problem with the forums these days for us 'old guard', the endless recycling of common topics (NO's Best Song Ever, Worst Song, Best Album, Album Cover, Live Gig, Video, ad nauseum.) I can appreciate that new users love to find this stuff out, but its continual reappearance often bumps more imaginative or informative dialogue from the screen.

I'd suggest a standardised Popular Polls page, linked from the Forums. There, you have the Top 20 or so polls which continually update as new users add their thoughts and votes. Best Album Ever and Best Song Ever stay at the top as they're the most popular, all the way through to How Many Days Till the ROCKET Hits the Turps Again, Is Johnny Giles Likely to See Leeds Win a Title Before His Eyes Fail Him, Which Two NOOLers Would You Most Like To See Jello Wrestling, etc.

When 'newbies' pop up and attempt to pose a "what's your favourite New Order song ever" type of conundrum, we simply redirect them to the Popular Polls forum and lock the thread away.

An extra forum for polsters would be nice, maybe something tucked away requiring a few links to get to.:D

I don't generally mind them, they can be a nice way to get a conversation started. There has been an abundance of, say, not very sensible polls lately, however a forum for polls alone would just hamper the meaninigful ones. Better idea would be to filter out the good ones I think. Besides, if one's at an old slow computer (OK, I'm biased here) it takes a lot of time to switch between forums. So my humble opinion is that it's best to limit their number in some way.

just limit the number a polls a user can post. i don't think a poll forum would be a good idea, cuz then less people will see it. i mean, i've seen other boards do poll only forums and people don't visit them very often. and a poll is only fun when more than 5 people vote.

what is the big deal??? polls add some fun... if a poll is pretty much off-topic or mostly about the poster, the webmasters can just lock it and it drop down out of site... its the nature of messageboreds, everybody just play together, its not an exclusive secret clubhouse like the masons or stonecutters

Looking at the reactions and the "age" of the respondents (in terms of time being member of NOOL and / or nbr of messages posted), my reaction as a relative newcomer probably does not count as much as the other opinions. Anyway my impression so far:

• for a newcomer the polls are interesting as the reactions of experienced NOOL'ers include detailed opinions. Esp. about NO and songs, gigs etc.
• the reason why this thread is started has to do with the sudden burst of polls that were created on a single day by one person. Therefore I voted for limiting the amount of polls pp to 1 per day.
• my pattern is to login to 1 forum. Scan the latest headers and go through 1 or more interesting ones. It is nice to have some polls in there without having to switch to another forum. I'm using an old fashioned (read slow) modem connection most of the time (where each second is more or less a drop of gold). So having a mix of messages and polls in the first page is most efficient. So far for a newbie opinion.

I don't see what the problem is. A poll is just a thread with a poll at the top. People can start silly polls but they can just as easily start silly threads.
