USA '89 Tour Input required please

Hi.

I am in the process of documenting my own experiences during the USA '89 tour and would be grateful for any contributions which may add an additional perspective to the numerous stories (the funnier the better).

Photographs would be also more than welcome as would your own special memories of the shows you went to.

I have already stimulated initial publishing interest and anticipate the initial collating exercise taking at least 6 months to a year.

My reminiscences of 2 shows (April 30th & June 16th) are in the Tours & Concerts section of this very site. They're not very detailed but may jog your memory about the particular shows. I imagine it must be hard to distinguish between all those shows you experienced after all these years. Did you keep a journal?

strangely enough, for some reason i can still remember exactly what i wore to see NO the summer of '89. can't say that about any other concert i've ever been to. i can barely remember what i wore to my senior prom!

The e-mail account has been snowed under with responses from all over the cyberworld. It is not that I do not remember a majority of the experience it is just that hopefully other people may be able to prompt further memories from this dull skull.

I have been in contact with the radio station in Houston who hosted the show at Astroworld and they are delighted to help and are on the case as far a photographs and individual experiences are concerned. I can vaguely remember having my photo taken with Gillian by what appeared to be an official photographer so hopefully they have that documented.

Also, a roadie from the Throwing Muses e-mailed me yesterday that he has a whole bundle of photos from backstage at the first LA Universal Studios show and several from the subsequent gig in Santa Barbara.

Exciting stuff.

ANY writes up or photographs would be great GR. PLEASE sent it to my e-mail account. I have the Portland show covered as I have made contact with someone I met at the show and she has a scrap book full of stuff relating to the evening. I have found it difficult splitting the memories of the Seattle and Portland shows but I distinctly remember what the outside of the venue looked like and the fact that the local bus service dropped me almost right outside the venue. Plus I can remember these guys throwing tiny polystyrene balls to get people to stop them standing on their chairs! There was also a cracking party after the show and Tanya Donnelly was cursing some comments a journo had said about her after he interviewed her after one of the LA shows.

I am flying through the stage one gigs and have just finished the initial write up of the Austin show so I will soon be focusing on the Dallas more closely. Bloody crazy night, which actually followed two or three mad ones in Houston. I became friends with Rob O'Neill, a DJ who worked for the station which covered/ promoted the show, and a whole load of us had a blast for the days before the trip to Dallas. His house mate Mike worked in a club and he made the best Mellonballs on record and I was steaming for around a week afterwards as a consequence.

Once I have documented the BASICS I will be delighted to post it up here. Probably 40% of it focuses on the actual gigs but most of the comical stuff comes from the escapades getting to there and the mad stuff afterwards.

about 'mad stuff' going on before or afterwards...dude, i was 14 and my dad drove us the 2 hours down the mountains to red rocks and back up again to our 'south park-esque' town, so it was a pretty tame evening for agentwood and friend. it was my first ever show at red rocks, though...beautiful.

That was a walk and a half up that mountain wasn't it?!!? Some people were puffing hard. It was also slightly uncomfortable for me until I adjusted the air con in the BMW I was driving ;o)

Alexa is coming along thanks JG. The other two have flown back but we still have to wait until the quack gives us the all clear which will hopefully be soon. I will ring you so we can arrange something for this week.

it is quite a hike isn't it...i can imagine it would be twice as hard for someone who isn't used to the altitude up at 6000 ft.! it's worth the hike, though. probably the most beautiful music venue anywhere. red rocks: see a concert, go sightseeing, get a great workout.

Sure is a great venue and certainly in the middle of nowhere. We did however find a small town around the corner at the bottom which was a rather nice place to spend the afternoon drinking before the show.

It was quite a long drive to the next show so Kim and I elected to go as far as we could immediately after before shivering to death sleeping in the car for several hours.

There are many beautiful cities in the USA and Denver is one of them. The surrounding R Mountains are quite a site to wake up to each morning. Even from the comfort? of a Motel 6!
