I've got a little tale to tell. Its 12.30 on friday and Im finishing work for a fortnight. That night me and a few friends were setting off to my sisters who is at Reading University to stay in her caravan whilst attending Reading 89 before flying off to Tenerife late Sunday night. We get there attend the festival and thoroughly enjoy ourselves at the end of it I become a total New Order nut.Anyway we set off from Heathrow for our holidays in the sun.We get to tenerife about 5 o'clock in the morning throw our bags in the apartment and go searching for nightlfe. The first bar we stumble across is a place called Strikers named after the cartoon caracter in The Sun.WE go in and the music is Ska Specials,Madness etc.I get my pint of Snakebite and black and head for the DJ box to find out if he's got any New Order. The DJ says yes theres some in there somewhere just have a look through and get them out and I will play them for you,so I did.I came across Run,Fine Time And Blue Monday.I left these out for the DJ to play and went back to my friends.About an hour passed and we still Hadn't heard any New Order so I went back to the DJ to remind him. This time he was being a bit shirty syaing this is a bar dedicated to mod only.So I argued and argued with him to play my requests but he wouldn't have it so my Snakebite and black just happened to get poured all over his mixing desk.THe music came to a grinding stop and there was smoke coming out of the music system.THe only thing for me to do was leg it from the Buster Bloodvessel lookalike bouncer before I got our head severly re-arranged.

Good work fella!

Any dj that has NewOrder in their collection yet refuses to play it should at the very least receive the death penalty :p

As a veteran of several Tenerife campaigns I applaud your audacity. I wouldn't run the risk of upsetting any of the crazy fuckers who work out there from the DJs to the PRs to the Scouse pill pushers. It's a shady place and no mistake!

Agreed. Once saw the mutha of all fights in Busby's, which cleared that bar, and Bobby's, and involved a set of supposed boxers, all over training on the island, and general security who came out of nowhere. Ten-a-side, twenty of the biggest black lads you've ever seen. The security mullered them, unconscious blokes were getting kicked to pieces on the floor where they lay. Horrendous stuff.

Much as I like New Order, mind, it's a bit daft to dump ale over anyone's decks, and especially over a Ska club's. I know a few of us here appreciate a bit of the old 2-tone and it amused me to re-read in Mick Middles book this morning (thought I'd give it a revisit) that Barney and Hooky sported crombies in their yoof and Barney lied about his age to get a lambretta before Hooky!

I've never been but I know a few lads who've lived out there, some of them even legitimately. It sounds like gangster's paradise. Anybody catch that documentary about a lad who disappeared there in the late 80's? It's a bit of an eye opener. A mate of mine has just blown his life savings on smuggling operation, bringing cigarettes back from there. Him and two of his mules all got stopped in the space of one week and his entire stock was confiscated.

The documentary with the bloke whose family were still looking for him fifteen years later? But then the production company got word he'd had his throat cut after burgling some gangster's gaff? And his best mate, who was now a car-dealer up north somewhere, wouldn't then speak to the cameras cos he secretly knew what had happened to his mate all along? Depressing stuff.

Yep, that's the one.

Most interesting thing about that documentary was the very thinly veiled inference that Gary Lineker's double shady brother knew far more than he was saying. I don't think I'm speaking out of turn when I say that the majority of the drug dealing on the strip goes on in and around Lineker's, not a nice place.

Got robbed of 20 quid one night just off the strip by a Spanish security gaurd for having a (very discreet) piss up a lane. He took it out my pocket as he frisked me and then came running back after me with his mate and skelped me on the forearm with his truncheon in a bid to provoke some kind of reaction. I just ran like fuck!

As I said a very shady place, need your wits about you all times which doesn't make for a very relaxing holiday.

There's two big tower blocks you can see just behind Lineker's and we had a 1st floor gaff in one of them one year. Mate of mine decided to discard his whisky glass over the side of the balcony at the end of one card game, only 10ft up but obviously it shatterred. I wasn't around for this, thankfully, but security stormed the gaff, dragged my mates downstairs, then pistol-whipped them after they'd picked the glass up. You can't really argue with a geezer with a gun!

Actually, looking back they fcuking deserved it! ;)

A bunch of us used to hit the glorious?!?! surroundings of Bobby's etc every January and I can't remember one night when it didn't go off in Bobby's. It got to a point that no matter how many bone head bouncers were on hand they simply could not deal with the brain dead weight of 20 15 stone representatives of 2P. Eventually their only option was to utilise the smoke machines so the idiots ended up punching themselves.

Linekers was what I would call an early bar and was always the good option for getting bladdered cheap and quickly. Then after a visit to the powder server it was off the concrete meat markets that is Bobby's etc. Bloody awful place. But good fun on occasions! DM

You've summed it up pretty well there David. A rotten, concrete jungle in the sun.....but quite fun if you treat it for what it is! Despite the aggro I still have many fond memories of sitting outside the Soul Train on a balmy January(!)evening off me tree on some quality sweeties chancing my arm with some dodgy boilers from Wigan/Romford/Cardiff etc. Oh to be young again!
