LP covers vs. CD covers

How annoying is it that the CD artwork for JD/NO are such inferior versions of the original LP versions? The LP of UP had the white Fourier analysis quite small in relation to the whole cover (and thus nicely subtle), whereas the CD has it dominating the black background. And the vomit-inducing beige colours of Closer and Still are pretty shocking (why not give Closer its original white background?). Plus, I've seen one of the early (Italian?) copies of Still in white with blue lettering. Much nicer.

Then we've got the criminal cropping of the Fantin-Latour painting on the CD reissue of PCL, followed by that mingin' font on the back of LowLife. Does Saville authorise these, or are the record company just bastardising these classic designs for the sake of it? Has there actually been a CD sleeve that's actually superior to the original vinyl issue? Doubt it.

Anyway, that's my rant for today.

You did miss out the glory of the inner sleeves though. No stupid booklet will ever compare.

The only good thing about NO cd covers is the interchangablity of the front of LowLife.

yeah, that's all great and fine,

but what do you do nowadays, when there aren't any vinyl releases?

what do you say then?

you design for the CD cover size..

and you live with it..

the cover of 'get ready' isn't any better than the vinyl version..and all the vinyl covers for the singles were basic minimalistic geometry compared to the photography on the cd's (i didn't like the cd's though)...

the metallic limited edition cd-cover of 'brotherhood' is much better than the vinyl version..

the floppy-disc release cover of 'power corruption and lies' is equally as great as the vinyl..

the covers of technique and republic are hardly any better on vinyl than on the cd..

that being said, all the earlier releases, from ceremony- up until - true faith had superior artwork on the singles...

I think most of the original Factory CDs have better quality CD covers. My original Factory UP & CLOSER CDs has textured paper slicks....My BROTHERHOOD CD cover has metallic gloss finish.

It's just a case of shaving a few more pence off the manufacturing costs in order to maximise profit really, ain't it? That's capitalism for ya.

Talking of CD covers and suchlike, is anyone else's International with DVD a real pig to close, the worst case of double cd case design i think i've come across!

I've got the vinyl of every release, including Get Ready and 12" of Here to Stay. They came along after the initial release, but they did happen.

What I'm talking about are the LPs that came out before the advent of CDs. The PCL CD (at least the UK one, anyway) is considerably cropped.

And it's not simply a case of them making the covers suitable for CD size, the record company actually changes the proportions and some of the typographics. So basically my point is that LP artwork was superior. It's fairly irrelevant in regard to modern releases because they see both CD and vinyl release.

What really gets on my wick is that whereas in the past the CD cover was a reduced copy of the vinyl, nowadays it's the other way round. So what we invariably get is artwork that's designed to look good at 5 square inches looking crap when it's enlarged.

Oh no i don't need BAD cover syndrome!HELP! I love album covers but must admit the original FACTORY CDs covers are good.
