I saw NO last night at Area:One in L.A. (actually Devore in SB County). Some highlights:

  • Barney: "Hey Billy, what's going on over there with those girls?"

  • Billy Corgon: :"I told them that if they sleep with me, they get to sleep with you!"

  • Barney: "Yeah, sloppy seconds!"

  • Barney: "This is 60MPH - it's a protest song against the speed limit"

  • Barney: "The next song is Crystal - the most beautiful song ever written! No wait - the second most beautiful song ever written!"

  • Barney: "Hey Billy, all those rumors about you are unfounded - you're really a great guy" (hug ensued)

  • from "Temptation" - "Oh it's the last time, oh it's the last time, oh it's the last FUCKIN" time!"

  • Hooky was all over the place, sometimes not playing and talking to people on the side-ramps during songs. But last night he was a fucking rock god.

  • Funniest moment: some dude ran on stage after the last word of Blue Monday, threw one arm around Barney, took a picture of the two of them, then threw the camera to a friend in the pit before being carted away by security.

All of NewOrder played with the energy of men twenty years younger, with Barney making like a pogo-stick. Better show than Hollywood Bowl in '93. What a goddamn wonderful band.

it was a good show, but i think the hollywood bowl show was better. it doesn't take a genius to know that it doesn't take 3 guitar players to play a new order song. for any of you new order fans out there who didn't make it to any of these area one shows, it took 3 guitar players to perfom regret. no keyboard player for that one. the synths were sequenced and were mixed too low.

...but hey, it's new order so it's alright.

It might not take 3 guitars, but a lot of them could use 2 guitars on a permanent basis. I've been saying for years that New Order should hire a fifth musician to go on tour, because they would sound so much better. Personally, I don't like too much when I hear, for instance, Everyone Everywhere with both Gillian and Bernard on guitars and then hearing keyboards in the background, played by... no one.

Sequencers are a good thing for drum or bass loops, but I don't like when they're being used to replace a musician entirely.

And this is also why I wish that New Order will get a female backing vocalist to tour with them for their next shows because they now have enough songs with female backing vocals to justify that. I think that Crystal sounds much better with the female vocals than without, as heard live. And also that would help in playing WORLD (The Price of Love) because on the Republic tour, the backing vocals were sequenced as well... which is a shame.

Yes, I was impressed by the band's energy and excitment. Maybe that is why they only tour when they want to and not when they feel they "need" too.

Hooky was really into the crowd in my side most of the time, he really was into the crowd...
