Twas my first ever New Order concert. New Order (Wen Redro to John & Lorraine:D ) 14 years ago, and I was 14.....fookin mental! I am beginning to feel a wee bit old
Birmingham N.E.C 26th March 1989 New Order supported by Happy Mondays.
I'm surprised Hibster never mentioned it, as it was his first concert too
I had forgotten as well, John just texted me to say "14 Fuckin Years"
One of the best days of my life!
I'm still waiting for my first NO concert Shug, but when it does come, you can guarantee I will remember it fondly like you have done.

Lordy, I feel old too. 14 years you say since the Birmingham NEC in '89. That was my second gig after seeing them at GMEX the year before. What I remember most about the Birmingham NEC gig is it was a Sunday and the clocks went forward but me and my mate hadn't realised. Luckily we were so excited at going to see New Order again that we'd set off an hour earlier than we normally do and walked in as Happy Mondays started.
Only bad thing was we couldn't go down the front like at GMEX. We had to stay in our designated seats. Never went to NEC again.

When august comes around this year i can celebrate 10 years since my first NO gig at Reading in 1993!!!!

Aye! Me, John and Lorraine were in seats at the side as well. As I have posted before, my main memory of the night was Hooky sat on the speaker for a couple of songs, he must have been tired after the journey down from Glasgow the night before

it'll be 14 years for me this june 23. the denver show. our 14th anniversaries are almost exactly three months apart! '89 was a great year, then.

Remember the day well. Twas me 21st & what a way to celebrate. Think it was Easter Sunday too.
Took a coach from Chester to Brum & got me ticket which sat me right at the back. Could hardly see a thing, was the defining moment when I realised I needed specs. Undoubtedly the worst NO gig I've ever been too. Never been back to the NEC since.
In fact my only memories of the NEC are that they sponsored Everton the year after Heysel. The toffees should have been representing England in Europe as our Champs but of course that was the first year of the ban on all English clubs. The word around L'pool was the sponsors full name was No European Cup. Cruel.
Great story there Shug, my 14 year anniversary for the Order will come May 2.
This week though, 14 years ago, I saw two shows: That Petrol Emotion supported by Voice Of The Beehive, and Throwing Muses, supported by Penelope Houston. Didn't know that only 5 weeks later I'd see the Muses open up for NO. Very nice surprise. :)

put on true faith video (shugzvproductions), enjoyed myself as one of my house mates new girlfriend asked who new order were & then when I told her they were the people that released the biggest selling 12" of all time insisted I sing it!
they all left the room shortly after - still just meant i could turn the video up & not have them chatting over it!

7 of us had driven up for the G-Mex but we all 'boycotted' the NEC after we couldn't get standing tickets. No one fancied another Wembley debacle. Well, I say we ALL 'boycotted' but 2 days before the gig me mate's sister binned her fella and she had a spare STANDING ticket which my mate duly accepted. P*ssed the rest of us off no end (JG, that was me mate Scotty in Edinbro').
Quick trivia question though - what was 'odd' about the Monday's line-up that night?!

One of them DEFINITELY wasn't on E cos he was in jail. Er, actually, I s'pose he could've been on E in jail though, not sure?
Who was missing from the line-up? (it's not an easy one this, cos most people probably walked away thinking he was there).

That NEC gig had an excellent track list.
Quite a gig to beat as a first NO gig. Wouldn't mind hearing all songs again today (played in the same way using the same gear).

We were quite a bit away, I'm gonna hazard a guess at my good pal Bezrick (check profile pic for the real one) I didnae know anything about this Mr Jarvo.....am I right?

Yeah, Bez was in jail so they had a mate stand-in as a doppleganger 'Bez' instead.
This was the worst gig I ever went to. I'd just bought this studded belt (for some reason) and was using it to hold up my slightly oversized jeans. Bastard security wouldn't let me in with it on, so had to hand it over at the gate. Thumbs in jeans loops for me then, and down the front as per usual. Battered to fuck during the Mondays set (was more concerned with keeping my jeans up than getting involved with the gig), and just didn't enjoy the NO set because I was in a really foul mood by then. (Not to mention having a fag stubbed out on the back of my head, gawd knows how much spittle in my hair etc.....)
Having listened to the tape a few times, I was right, It was a shite lifeless performance by the Order, but a good one by the Mondays.
I didn't go to any more NO gigs for twelve years.
Yeah, the NEC gig was a let down after the GMEX gig. I remember we were in standing seats in the middle of the auditorium about 5 rows back from the front. There was a 'mosh area' immediately in front with about 1000 people in it tops, then a massive gap back to the seats that could have been filled quite safely with another 2000 people before the seats started. I remember I couple of guys launching themselves over the seats and running into the front area but then about 6 bouncers ploughed in and chucked them out again. Ridiculously badly structured. I hate stadium gigs anyway. And NO didn't play as well as at GMEX but then Birmingham isn't their hometown.
that was very frustrating, was itching to get to the front but everyone that broke the barrier got hauled out
OMG i that was my first NO gig too!!! I was sat right of the stage on the back row..over looking the stage... u could c Hooky looking out the stage entrance before the gig started... i still got the ticket stubs.. hidden inside the PFD vid cover...hehehe
