Mine would probably have to go to either This Time Of Night or Truth, mainly because of the weird New Order configurations that resulted from these tracks when the band played them live (heh : it's my rawk vs plinky-plonky debate again )

Anyway, Truth was the first truly synthetic drum machine song I believe, with Steve on keyboards but Gillian up front on rhythm guitar. I still think this is the best track on Movement by a mile, but live it was just awesome (see the Taras video, for example). This track lasted in the Order's live set long into 1983 (possibly beyond ?) and I'd fall over, Barney-at-Glasto-81 style, if they played it again.

This Time of Night is my fave track on Low Life, and again seeing them do this live at Poole Arts Centre just blew me away (they played it just before a rocking LWTUA), most pertinently because Steve started off on keyboards, helped Gillian out with the intro, then wandered off behind his drum kit and started thumping the old tubs after the first verse - truly classic live experience which to this day always sends a shiver down my spine :)

Two unsung heroes of the first Order, IMHO :)

(JD) Digital & Glass: I wish I could have been blown away by the Factory Sampler when it first came out... Insight: a lot of people seem to loathe the synth explosions, but I think they're great. And the way Steve goes 'pow-pow' all through the song is quite nice, too. These Days: love the climax during live versions (at least, when played well ;) ) Something Must Break: love the sound of the guitars! Passover: the whispered vocal underneath the main voice is so creepy; very controlled song, music wise, underpinning the chronicle of a devastating crisis Heart And Soul: great drumming/singing/bass & guitar... go on, just listen! As You Said... no, just kidding

(NO) Chosen Time (again, live versions): the sheer speed of the track! The Him: like 24 Hours, a classic example of the quiet verse/loud chorus technique... and with a false ending to boot Too Late: too bad this was only ever played during the 2nd Peel Session Ultraviolence: classic! Subculture: the 'Record Mirror' remix (the full Razormaid mix goes on too long)

well, first of all, 5 8 6 is my favorite New Order song. for me, it's kind of an early The Perfect Kiss, only better (and that's saying something!).

and i love Fine Time, too. it's grown a lot on me in recent times. it's just so fun and sleazy, but with a sense of humor about itself!

and Mr Disco. this song is amazing. it makes me so camp-happy! it's fabulous, and way fun to dance to. extremely well-produced.

and i LOVE Elegia, too. i think it's a beautiful song that's absolutely heartbreaking.

i love Face Up, too. i think it's as hooky (no pun intended) and fun as it gets. it's a great album closer for Low-Life.

i love Sub-Culture, too! i even love the single mix, with the campy backup singers! it's fabulous!

i also fancy Let's Go (Nothing For Me) quite a bit. :)

Weirdo, As It Is When It Was, All Day Long, Every Little Counts (half of Brotherhood there...) This Time of Night, Face Up, Senses, Everyone Everywhere, Vicious Streak, and LOVE LESS - one of the best NO songs ever.

what's player in the league like? well the verse shouldnt work at all. try playing the chords straight on the piano its something daft like c d e f# d (soz was a while ago i messed about with it thats probably completely wrong). somehow its great for them.

a great bit barney phrasing on the second verse 'im a capable person, free to roam', works really well.

then follows it a complete howler of a line: 'i dont need a curtain when im at home' ROFL. thanks barny.

all in all i do like it though, and sabotage/run this river dry (whatever it is offically called). either one should have been on the album over slow jam or rock the shack.

There's so many but I'll just mention.

1. Lonesome Tonight - probably my favourite b-side of all time.
2. Face Up - why oh why was this not a single? It's got Number 1 written all over it - just listen to the spurned lover revenge lyrics "Oh how I cannot bear the thought of you." And it's got that "Your hair was dark, your eyes was blue, guess what I'm gonna do to you" refrain that drunk people would love at 2am in the morning.
3. Too Late - this nags to be played again and again because it's so unfinished, so odd but so good.

hurrah for subculture! i've always been partial to the version on substance, myself. fantastic song. and let's hear it for let's go (either with vocals or instrumental, but right now i'm partial to the original version), broken promise, hurt, all the way, run, sooner than you think, all day long, such a a good thing, paradise (both brotherhood and robert racic mix) and liar. and, of course, SLOW JAM!

AVALANCHE

• Absolutely beautiful track, a perfect close to Republic or any New Order CD in my opinion.

BRUTAL

• This easily could have been an official single. It has a good beat, a crazy synth effect known only to this song, and a great bassline.

CHEMICAL

• Probably the fastest-paced New Order song (or most active in a sense). Could have been a good single too, great remix potential.

DON'T DO IT

• I personally like it better than it's A-side, Fine Time. Kind of a powerful song in a way.

DOUBTS EVEN HERE

• The best New Order song on Movement. And probably one of the most powerful New Order songs out there, takes us back to look at Joy Division. And the cover by Harry was great as well, and it was a techno-ish version, showing that this song has potential no matter what you do to it.

DREAM ATTACK

• I simply love this song for it's bassline, chorus and the synth parts near the end.

ECSTASY

• Neglected probably because you can barely hear what is being said through the distortion. But a great song, upbeat.

MTO

• I like this better than it's A-side, Run 2. I think it's great because there is so little to it and it's still listenable.

MURDER

• Quite a creepy song. Although I like alot of New Order's darker sounding songs.

PLAYER IN THE LEAGUE

• The synth effects are so beautiful around 4:23, used to give me goosebumps.

PROCESSION

• The intro is so retro. And the bassline (again, God Hooky is brilliant..) is crazy.

SABOTAGE

• From about 3:00 on becomes a fucking fabulous song. And is good to begin with.

SHELLSHOCK

• The electric guitar adds to the song so much. The intro would be kind of. Well, very wussy without it. And the chorus in this song is the most powerful chorus ever. And the fact that there are SO many sounds to listen to, it almost seems to sound chotic yet stays in order.

SPECIAL

• The most powerful track (arguably it would be Regret) on Republic. The perfect breakup/get back together song.

SPOOKY

• A little gem off of Republic with phenominal remixes. The original song itself is great too, the opening is cool. The piano between lyrics is cool. And again, the bass rocks.

STATE OF THE NATION

• The beginning wakes you up the best out of any New Order song out there. Great bassline (as usual). Shame Of The Nation is a great remix too, no matter what you guys think. Feel free to back me up on this.

SUBCULTURE

• The synth again is soooo damn bloody cool!!! And the lyrics have related to me more than you could imagine.

SUCH A GOOD THING

• Was dissapointed at first, but it really grows on you. An extremely cheerful song I must say.

THE HIM

• A really dark/evil sounding song, also the first New Order song I figured out how to play perfectly on guitar. Heavy for it's time too.

THIS TIME OF NIGHT

• Over all, just a great song. I think more people should pay attention to it.

TIMES CHANGE

• New Order tries to do hip hop. And it works. Times Change rules, one of the best songs from Republic.

TOO LATE

• I love this song because I always forget what it sounds like until it starts playing. Sound good because there isn't too much to it.

TRUTH

• Really weird tune. So weird that it's appealing. Kind of creepy at times. But not threatening creepy.

TURN THE HEATER ON

• They did justice to the original. The original was utter SHIT. Agree? And Barney sounds cool trying to sing reggae.

VICIOUS CIRCLE

• Should have been added to Republic instead of remaining a B-side. Good beat, bass and synth. Also the samples really fit the song.

WORLD IN MOTION

• Mainly for the 1996 remix, though I still don't mind the original.

WORLD (THE PRICE OF LOVE)

• Great song, great lyrics, great remix/cover potential. Great in the clubs. It's effect on the fans was only minimal due to Regret being the first single released.

Some of the all-time classic New Order songs are ones that have never been hyped up :

Let's Go - the instrumental is just superb, classic NO. Procession - a real gem that contains all the right bits. This Time of Night - ditto. Lonesome Tonight - so simple but so effective. Doubts Even Here - the only "JD" song NO wrote, beautiful. Ultraviolence - wonderful free-flow live track that had to be seen to be believed. Such a Good Thing - again classic NO. Player in the League - it's not a joke and it's not even funny that this was relegated to a B-side. Sabotage - simply beautiful.

Denial! Love it, but it never ever gets mentioned. Not even on this thread.

The Village, 586, Ultraviolence, Ecstasy. PCL is most definitely not just a three track album!

Thieves Instrumental! It's Thieves, but without the crap lyrics...what more could you want?

Face Up! One of the great whooping songs.

Everything from Technique is marvellous, as most of us would acknowledge, but individually they don't get enough credit. Especially Just Like Heaven. Er, I mean, All The Way... And Love Less. And Mr Disco.

Vicious Streak!

Sabotage! Perhaps not very edgy, but it is very lovely.

we had network gremlins yesterday

Me and Shug toyed with the idea of doing a poll for this over the phone when we spoke yesterday.

Im venturing forward the following.

World - we only really talk about the video, its not one of their greatest songs in the world but certainly worthy of a mention.

The Village - I love this jangly, bumpy flava! a song which starts off so positivly then just crashes down as Barneys lyrics submerge into clouds of darkness!! highly underrated!

Broken Promise - Off the phenomenal Brotherhood album, whips along at a great pace with some breathtaking drumming from Steve, Hooky in his element and Barney tugging on the old heartstrings

Sunrise - A huge huge track, cant believe its not mentioned more, also one of, if not the best live performances in their history was done to this song at the HAC for whistle test or the tube (damn my memory!)

Leave Me Alone - picked up a few comments lately and no doubt will on PC&l survivor which is currently running, but gorgeous lyrics and a great song to listen to when lifes fu**ed you off!

Primitive Notion - would love to hear that one live. Reunited in a Day, Special and Avalanche.

I love DDI, B&M, MTO & The Happy One from technique sessions, though I understand others won't.

Face Up - may sound a little dated but still works for me.

Oh, and a little OT but Radiation by Electronic.

I've always loved the single version of Round & Round, it's one of God's own tunes and should have gone to No. 1 for a year. Criminally underrated. The 7" of BLT is a cracking version and I also really like 'Way Of Life' off Brotherhood.

Nobody's mentioned Hurt here. That 1-2-3-4 is definitely a VBG for me every time I hear it, and I just love the way it builds up before Barney comes in and ruins everything with his hollerin'.

i agree - Hurt is indeed fabulous.

The remixes can all get stuffed, but I really like the Republic take on Spooky. And the original vocal version of Let's Go is brilliant, would have fit brilliantly on Low Life.

The original vocal version of Let's Go sounded horrible - they left it off Low Life because they couldn't get it right. They subsequently cleaned it up and made it more acceptable, but the version they had at the time of recording the album was nowhere near ready. The song was always going to be an instrumental, but they suddenly added lyrics at a late stage for the record then changed their mind again and ended up between a rock and a hard place.
