Nope im not talking about Dry ;)

Name the song with your favourite opening NewOrder opening bars.

Often this has more impact when hearing the song live. For example who remembers the harmonica sounding off LV at MOVE for example? magic :)

But without a doubt the opening bars to Regret win hands down for me over any other NewOrder song!!!

The best opening bar is dr... oh wait, you've already done that joke.

If it's any consolation Major - I was just about to do that gag as well;)

It's gotta be Hooky's Bass on Age Of Consent.....closely followed by Ceremony.

True faith. That drum intro's ace! By the way, a question for the technologically-accented NOOL'ers: the drums on TF are real or is it a drum machine? That question's been puzzling me ever since I heard it..

that dry gag was soooooooooo obvious i had to nip it in the bud :D

yup ceremony is a goodun, as is aoc, im really talking about the first couple of seconds of a track, the quicker the goosebumps appear the more powerful the intro

Definitely Regret.

Close runners-up for me are:

  1. Dreams Never End
  2. Primitive Notion (cos it sounds just like 24 Hours)
  3. Temptation (oooh ooh oooh oooooh oooh)

Good call - is it just me or does there seem to be words in there??? Sounds something like "bass mechanic" to me.

We had a debate about this in a thread once. I STILL think it says "Dislocated me arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrm"

This Time of Night, because you can strain to hear that sample of "I've always lived what has been called a low life" if you turn it up real loud, then the DMX machine kicks in. Brilliant way to start a brilliant track.

Shit! I forgot Subculture (Low Life version)

True Faith definitely--the classic dance/pop hook: punchy drums followed by gillian's synths...

Ceremony & Age of Consent, hands down.

Ceremony definately, it reminds me of being a lad and going out on my bike with my Substance in my walkman and about halfway down my road (after the blank bit at the start) Ceremony would start and it sounded fucking fantastic everytime

regret, regret, regret.

and enjoy the silence. :D

Something that would kick it off after just one single second - the likes of Ceremony, Age of Consent or Love Vigilantes.

The squidgy bass synth on Bizarre Love Triangle, Hooky's moaning bass on As It Is..., the twinkly synth at the beginning of Crystal, the opening bars of Temptationlive when it used to be segued in with Everything's Gone Green and, my personal favourite, Barney's cough at the outset of Loveless :)

lonesome tonight

the most beautifully simple intro to a beatiful song

even sounds beautiful on the "more than despair" live version when hooky's bass is louder than loud and sounds like a fuckin train comin!

just magic pure and simple

Good thread - there are so many great intros but I've always loved the way Dreams Never End builds up.

And where's the whining keyboard sound that precedes Hooky's bassline ?

Well, I was thinking of the live performances.

I always imagine sun rays shooting through the clouds when I hear the start of "Your Silent Face". Spacey.

"Ya, I guess they never use(d) it in live performances, but why?"

It's a studio enhancement, probably thanks to Hannett (enhanettment ?), nobody would have had a free hand to play it live back then except Ian and he wasn't doing anything like that, it would have been a lot of trouble for a pretty small payback. It is cool though, those sounds that run through the track, fairly subtle but they do a lot to flesh out a very sparse arrangement.

So many of the songs have fantastic openings - even the likes of Blue Monday, BLT, Perfect Kiss. The Cobweb vote goes to Ceremony though.

At a pinch, Dream attack: the perfect way to end Technique.
