New Dawn Fades "edit" from Unknown Pleasures - Sessions?

Hello! Has anybody here ever heard this edited version of New Dawn Fades from the UP-Sessions. I have read about bootlegs that have it on their track list, but could never find one. Would like a description of how different it is. I'm not talking about a live-version or any kind of cover. Thanx, Dirk

I think I have that on cassette, I haven't listened in at least ten years but I don't remember it being very different than the album version. If I can dig it up I'll post again.

There are two supposed alternate mixes around of 'Unknown Pleasures' tracks. They are 'Candidate' and 'New Dawn Fades'. Those mixes can be found on two vinyl bootlegs, A Retrospective on the Vinyl Pain and Pleasures vols. I & II. However, the only difference is that the drums have been treated to the same effect as that used on the studio version of Auto-Suggestion (the heavy echoing of the drum kicks). In other words, those remixes aren't very special or terribly interesting. Some have even wondered whether they are really genuine remixes. In favour of their authenticity, it could be said that Martin Hannett could well have tried that particular effect on several tracks (not just Auto-Suggestion), to see in which context it would best work; also, those remixes are really old, dating back at least to the middle of the 1980s, i.e., a time when sound editing facilities weren't as widespread as they are today.

I have those two tracks on CD-R, ripped from vinyl. If there's interest, I could post them to one of the binaries newsgroups (sorry, I haven't got any webspace; perhaps someone could download them from the newsgroups and put them on a webpage?)

Thanx a lot for this reply, you described it very well. I'm only wondering about you stating that the remixes are from the mid-80ies? IIRC they are supposed to be alternate takes, directly from the UP Sessions in 1979? Would make sense as you described Hannett trying this on more than just one track? I only know from one questionable so called remix of Isolation that I always considered being made by a fan with not a lot of equipment during the 80ies. Thanx again for your reply. I did not state that the remixes are from the mid-80ies. I merely pointed out that their authenticity has been called into question, and that they go back at least to the mid-eighties, when "A Retrospective vol. I" was produced (I don't know if they circulated earlier already, among tape traders). Of course, if the remixes are genuine, they must date from 1979.

They aren't genuine - I'm convinced of this. It's just some echo that somebody has badly added to the drums a la Autosuggestion.

While I agree that the tracks are suspicious and very uninteresting, I am not entirely convinced that they are fakes. I have always wondered how it would be possible to add the effects to the bass+guitar alone in 'Candidate', and to the drums alone in 'New Dawn Fades', without access to the multi-track mastertapes. I mean, you can't just add echo to a mixed-down album track without compromising the full sound of the song, and not just isolated instruments.
