live versions of 5 8 6

does anyone have any New Order shows where they played 5 8 6? what are the best versions? and how do they sound? i'm trying to figure out which 5 8 6-blessed show(s) to try to acquire.

Try Bradford Caesar's Palace 19th March 1984, where they segued Everything's Gone Green into Temptation into 5-8-6 : only time they did that, AFAIK :)

plenty of outings for this track during 84-87...some pretty long versions if i remember..often used by the audience as a bit of restbite.. for example sheff uni kicked off with temptation,ceremony,aoc and dreams never end then they decided to play this time of night and a very long version of 586..very considerate

Visit the tours section of the site, almost all (if not all) have setlists. I'd check between 82-84. I'm sure I have it on a couple of bootlegs, but Mick has them all in Manchester. I'm sure Timbo would be able to sort you out, he has every gig the band done in the 80's

and was it ever segued with Blue Monday? that would have been incredible...

It definitely never sounded like the PCL version, nor indeed the Peel version.

It was generally very quick, and IIRC, always started off with the trademark drum sequence and some squidgy keyboards. It always had an extended percussion mash-up in the middle (a bit like they used to do with Hurt when they played that live).

I'll see if I can't encode a good example from my arsenal of bootlegs :)

Also Bristol 84, Hull 84 and one or two others from the European dates. It worked quite well.

586 changed a lot over the first two years of its existence. The first live versions (May 82) were very much like the Peel session - slower sequencer, different drum pattern. By the time they got to Australia 82 it has become a bit faster and had a more recognisable beat, and it was only really in 1984 that it became faster. It ended up far more like the second half of the PC&L version than the Peel session version. Another great low synth spitter like Ultraviolence - unless you heard it live you can't appreciate what I'm talking about, but there were things coming out of the speakers that never made it onto record.

I've encoded a classic example from Glasgow Tiffany's, 14th April 1983.

This is an interesting version, not least for the screw up at the start (de rigeur in those days - they started the gig with what Hooky described as "the idiot version" of Blue Monday, which was the shortened Top of the Pops mix, but it all went horribly wrong !).

The opening bars from Hurt (played earlier in the set) start this version of 5-8-6 off : to hide their embarrassment, Barney cracks a very sexist joke about women, whilst Hooky comes back with a great riposte to a heckle, honing in on the lack of sartorial elegance dsplayed by that particular punter

Great version : full percussion mash-up halfway through, as I described earlier. It does sound reasonable close to the PCL version, on reflection, but as Benny says above, it was always much faster, and there was a damn sight more going on live than on vinyl.

Also worth noting that the plinky-plonky bit at the end was always played by Barney on the synths normally used by Steve (behind Gillian).

96kbps, mono (no point doing stereo : these are not exactly high quality bootleg cassettes - I bought most of them from one superb stall in Camden market for £3 a throw, when most other bootleggers were charging a fiver), 4.03MB, 5 minutes 52 seconds.

i just finished listening to it, and it's absolutely fantastic! i love how noisy and chaotic it is...and the intro with the Top of the Pops Blue Monday and then Barney and Hooky's witticisms is certainly interesting. :)

if you ever feel like encoding any of the very early versions, please do so! i'll definitely listen to them incessantly!
