The origin of Republic cover and inlays leading to single artwork

Can anyone shed any light on this?

Just who are those 2 pulling the orange rubber beach ring and what cities are depicted in the spooky and world cases?

It's Rebecca and Grant pulling the rubber ring. I believe someone came up with Chicago as the city on the World cover.

Just a long shot but I'm guessing for Spooky to be Chicago, it would have to be an extremely long shot, perhaps taken from a deep space probe. Giotto or something.

the creative magazine piece on saville had some info on it & the rubber ring photo was actually used on a cosmos holiday brochure!

World might be Los Angeles; remember there were two very different Spooky covers.

I once went to a lecture by Peter Saville at the Hacienda organised by Manchester's Creative Circle. There he discussed his work, mainly New Order stuff and the origins of lots of stuff. From the best of my memory he said about the Republic stuff that he was spending a lot of time in America (at the time he was a partner in Pentogram) and he became interested in all the cheesy glossy stock images used over there and it was just a slightly ironic take on that. So they are all just comercially available library stock images. The 'coming soon' bits on the inside were something to do with the same cheesy americanness and watching loads of round the clock TV.

Right you are. Let me just had that the pics were available under the equally ironic "Pacific Coast Highway" title and that Saville used them because "Republic" was meant to be a "commercial" album. Funny... "Republic" commercial?????

And the "A NewOrder release" logo was a tongue-in-cheek nod to... Disney videos' packaging!

But what we really want to know is...why 'Z' new order release?

From design magazine 'Eye' (17/95) in which Pete was asked the question; 'What are the sources of your recent designs, based on photo library shots, for the New Order singles and the album The Republican?':

I showed the group perhaps 200 visual references - things cut from magazines, bits of type, photographs, written pieces, cartoons, digital things, anything that said "1992/1993". One particular LA category called "PCH" - "Pacific Coast Hi-way". Just one image from :PCH" was all that they could agree on, out of 200 possibilities. The only context in which I could imagine using the image was in juxtaposition with others, as in [Dan Friedman's] Artificial Nature, creating some kind of narrative.

The result was a list of almost 100 topics which were despatched to the photo libraries. Every day was like Christmas! I'd go into Pentagram and there would be this stack of images to look at. Out of every 50 pictures there would be one or two. I wanted cowboys and along came these guys. I wanted burning buildings and I go thtis one. We had no idea at this point how they would go together, but what was evolving in my mind was a post-LA experience: television culture, mass-media overload, the irony and wild juxtapositions of channel-surfing.

And then I went to the shop for some crisps and a bottle of pop.

It's a typo. It was originally intended to be "2 NewOrder Release"... as in "Spooky CD-single 2"!

A to Z maybe? Though quite what that's got to do with anything is anyone's guess...

I thought it was either a typo, or because the slightly different CD case the second disc was released in was refeered to as a "Z case". Forget where I read it though...

The "Z case" explanation makes sense. The Z also gave an ominous connotation that the release would be their last.

This is Downtown LA from the mid eighties...before the cylindrical "library tower" that now dominates the skyline went up.

You can clearly see what used to be the "1st Interstate" bank building along with the twin Wells Fargo towers (I worked in one on the forty second floor one summer)...

Anyone notice that the Spooky LA photo, which is also in the Republic collage, has a tower with 'Union BONK' in lights, as opposed to the Republic inner photo where it reads 'Union BANK'? I've always wondered why the change.
