We all know Regret & Special will end in the final battle :D

Now, Regret tends to get on my nerve when I listen to it too much, not sure Special does that ;)

But as Patrick said, this is another song to sleep to ;)

I will make it my personal mission to see that Everyone Everywhere gets in the last 3/4!

If I may ask, Patrick, why vote Regret out now? It's the BEST track off Republic for sure, to me, but not my favourite. I don't see why we get rid of the deadwood (and that's A LOT of deadwood) before we get rid of it.

I'm just being contrary, Ben. I think Regret is overrated, and most of the rest of Republic is underrated. I don't seriously believe there is any chance Regret will be voted off at any point.

Well, I think Regret will win this poll, and Special will come in second. I'm hoping that Everyone Everywhere and Spooky do well.

SPECIAL towers head and shoulders over anything committed to audio/tape or vinyl ;)

The whole essence of these polls is a contrived sham if it fails to win

Funny, I played the album all the way through tonight for the first time in a year or so, and it was much better than I remembered. Chemical.

"Bass Mechanic" my arse - the whole album is a Stephen Hague wankfest : I too will not be voting in this Survivor - I'm not technical enough to understand the reasoning behind leaving that bassline off this album from track 4 onwards.

Harrumph

(By the way, Regret wins, hands down)

It's shite, like the rest of the album bar Regret ! Vote Regret out first everyone, then and only then can we show just how crap this album really was.

Seeing as Chemical is probably the worst thing they've ever recorded, it has to be that.

I fear for the future of Regret though, seems it has a number of people who don't like it, and then some others who just think it would be funny to vote it off! Hardy har har, such comedians!

Regret should win with reasonable comfort.

Almost impossible vote to work out which of the average songs is more average.

I was thinking of the rapping one, but then I'm not certain if the one with the organ melodies is worse. But then I quite enjoy both depending on my mood. The rapping song has a nice chorus but I could never work out what 'Pork Pie' town meant? - Avalanche is excellent, albeit an incidental composition.

Regrettable Circumstances, World (The Price of Eggs), Ruining the Day, Spoony, Chemistry Set and the one about tramps sitting on grass are all very good - it may have been easier if Nicky Spots had put the poll in running order (very disappointing).

Something that kicks in around half time I'm going to vote for as that's when my finger nudges the selector forward. I'll have to work out which one that is.

Mind, I've never been overly keen with Unfinished Sympathy, sorry, Special.

Obviously Regrettable Circumstances is the standout New Order classic which saves the album from Mole Hunt status.

It's good to see a long debate on RePubic, it's not that bad an album really, maybe cos I only play it once it in a blue moon:lol:

Special does exactly what it says on the tin. Regret is one of New Order's finest singles and Liar is a bangin wee tune an all.

Avalanche is cats piss and has to be the first to go.

Agree with Shug on the debate. While Regret is no doubt a smashing tune, and would rate highly on any NO album, I'm interested in the question "if Regret wasn't on Republic, what would you think of it?", so I'd like to see it go on that basis...

It's funny, because everybody seems to look back on it now as having been shit apart from Regret, What will people be thinking of Get Ready in 8 years time ? Republic had as many average New Order tracks on it as Get Ready did.....

I think Republic had a couple of STINKERS on it, depths to which Get Ready doesn't quite stoop. I don't think there's anything that's come out of the Get Ready sessions which is quite as poor as Times Change, Spooky, Liar, Avalanche or Young Offender.

Also, I think people had higher expectations for Republic, whereas Get Ready felt more like a 'bonus' than anything else. I wonder what we'd make of either album if we didn't know anything about New Order and were given both to listen to tomorrow without any of the baggage which obviously comes along with these things. Republic felt like a nail in the coffin to me, whereas Get Ready saw the phoenix rising from the flames again. Crystal aside, I see most other tracks from Get Ready on a par, but it's still on a level higher than I see all other tracks from Republic, bar Regret. One thing they've basically forgotten to do on both albums is succintly blend the geetars with the keyboards. Chemical had a stab at it, and most people seem to hate that track (I actually think it's okay) but the likes of Young Offender just bombed, whereas World was nothing more than a bloody good O2 song with Barney on vocals. It didn't sound like New Order to these ears. That could've been a classic if they'd stuck Hooky on it. It just strikes me that they lost their way with the synths on Republic so just thought fcuk it, and ditched 'em for GR. If anything makes GR suffer it's the fact there's no diversity on it.

I've never been a massive fan of slow instrumentals Patsy, not just on NO records but others as well, the name of it escapes me, but the insrumental on Pills n Thrills was fuckin terrible as well, the Mondays copying theOrder:lol: I just don't like it matey, Elegia fares slightly better, and Soviet from Electronic is about the same. On the other hand.....I fuckin love the Let's Go instumental.

Confused? you should be:beer:

To me, Crystal is so much, much better than anything on Republic that the rest of GR could be blank and it would still be better.

I don't usually like slow instrumentals or for that matter slow anything, Shugsy, but I do think Avalanche is nice.

Can't compare GR with Republic.

I agree a bit with Jarvis, more was probably expected from Republic after the brilliance of Technique. I think Get Ready's a great album, and it still gets played quite a bit. Obviously not everyone's gonna agree with me, but I love the songs others regard as a weakness (Slow Jam & RTS) it's a lot easier to listen to than Republic, and in Primitive Notion and even Turn My Way, you've got classic tracks that are regarded highly by the old guard.

Big Al J - note that Barney was so fed up with eleccy instruments by the time GR came 'round he and others went with guitars.

The synth/guitar situation has been rocky since Technique, where the two were blended to perfection. Downwhill since then, ending in a mess which has been the backing tape / synth sequencing mesh of potatoes of the recent live shows.

New Order need to prove they can blend the two as successfully as they pioneered in the 80's. To not again be scared by letting a drum machine kick butski on its todd for 1 min. 30.

The last concentrated attempt at a synth/guitar tune was Here to State; which sounded dated.

To the previous point - GR is as diverse as any previous NO album, and is guitar based as a direct result of the overtly synthed side projects.

That's my theory anyway so smoke it.

Avalanche was pretty much the last thing Gillian did with NewOrder wasnt it.. quite ironic considering the noises she makes during it and the title AVALANCHE and the fact it was the last track on an album entitled REPUBLIC!

Although i assumed she worked with the guys on Brutal did she not??

Having played the legendary Low-Life (for about the 1 millionth time), I now enjoy more songs on GR than with Low-Light. And yes, this is down primarily to the fact GR is newer, but after 3 wks. I was so embarrassed by The Republican it wound up in a shoe box for 15 years.
