I'll be interested to know what your opinions are on this.

YES they have helped NO they shouldnt have strayed from their original musical direction as NewOrder

On reflection do you think the time apart helped their creativeness as individuals which led to them being more productive and expressive when they reformed as a band after the break they had in the mid/late 90's ?

I often wonder, assuming they stayed together as a band after Republik - what their next album would have been like had they not gone their seperate ways and explored their side projects as they did.

YES! Because they had time to recover to "GET READY" for a fabulous comeback :D

Yes of course, because without them, there would be no New Order anymore...

And we got very good stuff while they were on a break!

Ok ok ok.. i know where your going with this guys!!

I meant really has their music developed in a direction which you feel is better for the band NewOrder, ie: Barney said he wanted more creative freedom to get ideas out of his system, Hooky wanted probably the same and Steve and Gill, well who knows!

Personally i think the side projects did them the power of good, even if i did initially receive Grrrrrrrready with a lukewarm reception....

Dunno really, you could say it was a bit of a hinderence after doing a cracker like Technique, then the majestic Electronic album, we got a couple of good singles from Republic and the odd good song, but the album on a whole is not the best is it? Then they go split up fer 8 years. Then after Monaco had a bit of Success, and a bit more from Electronic we were given Get Ready, which is considerably better than Republic. As for the overall sound - I don't think the side projects made much difference to New Order. Though you could say Monaco and Electronic took stuff from NO, Shine and WDYWFM could've been New Order (which is Praise indeed) and there are a few of Electronic songs that would grace NO albums as well.

When New Order get together, they create their "Own" sound.

what is true is that without twisted tenderness there wouldn´t be a get ready. so it´s a matter of deciding if you like or not these albums. i absolutely LOVE TT and GR is good, so I think it helped to define what kind of noise they would make.

definitely helped NO. the side projects allowed the band members to get truly bad material out of their system which they might otherwise attempt to inflict on our preciousssss new order, while simultaneously providing the public with enough good material to keep them fresh in people's minds during their five million-year hiatus...and the somewhat dodgy 'republic' era.

they're all very creative people and they strike me as the type that would feel stifled if they didn't express themselves creatively. i don't know how much the new order sound would developed and change if they recorded an album in 1995 or 1997. but the side projects probably did give them more variety, challenge and freedom, and that's good for anyone. i probably can't imagine doing music (or doing anything) with the same 4 people all your life, so it must have been a breather.

If they recorded an album between 1995-1998 would be their failure,i think.

I think, had they not come back with a strong record like Get Ready after such a prolonged split, most of us would be cursing the day Barney, Hooky, and Steve and Gillian decided to do their own thing independent of one another. Seeing as GR was an instant classic, I have to say it helped.

Thats the most sensible thing u posted since you stopped posting pictures!! ;)

Certainly would have to agree, although it was very interesting to hear them outside the confines of the band it was also a a great relief to hear their comeback and to know that a band who's music we value so greatly would produce more of what they do best - together.

Deep down i had no doubt that Grrrrready would be excellent, i've always maintained they simply do not make sub-standard albums and even though Republic is often cited as an album which was "below par" by their peerless standards, i'd still choose that album over pretty much any other artists album, time and time again :D

I think they helped, cos they served to illustrate in no uncertain terms that in this particular case the whole is most definitely greater than the sum of the parts.

In an ideal world, there'd have been no need for the side projects. However, without them, we would certainly not be enjoying the current life of Neworder.

They had some good, even great tunes in their own right, but their real worth was their part in the healing process.

I think they helped because when the band got back together, they were able to look at things with fresh eyes, which led to GR being better than it might have been if they'd stayed together through all the hassle that went on.

Hi!

You can hear a little bit of New Order in every side project. As individuals they made some great music. I prefer them playing together, but understand that they needed time apart. I think the time apart did them good and am not going to fret on what might have been.

'Big Bang' By Revenge was brilliant, & stands up with anything New Order & their satellites have ever done, but, on the whole, Revenge were panties.

Electronic- Good mainly, tho I cant get into the 'Twisted Tenderness' album

Other Two- OK

Monaco- Damn good, but Im only saying that cos theyre the only N.O spin-off I`ve seen perform live!

I think that creatively New Order was and still is so intense that a bit of space was needed after such a long period of time together. We got some ripper albums like Twisted Tenderness and you can see the almost creative relief in that project particularly--the platitudinal lyrics are refreshing rather than dull. This free vibe continues into songs like Slow Jam ect.

It seems the band is hungrier than ever and that is a rare quality in 80s bands reuniting in the 90s. It is interesting to note that Duran Duran and Eurythmics have crashed and burned when it came to surviving the test of time both creatively and personally. Thank God the Order haven't--and I think thanks largely to their respect of each other in the long run.

Yes. The side projects seemed to have given them more artistic freedom away from each other and then after 3 albums of Electronic, 2 apiece from Monaco and The Other Two and Revenge, they realized that the band wasn't over just yet. If they didn't side projects to experiment like they did then I think it's plausible to think that New Order might not have reunited.
