Playing side-projects tunes live?

How would you react if New Order played, for instance, Getting Away With It and What Do You Want From Me in their upcoming tour?

Would you be shocked, hate it, love it?

In 1998 they brought back their "own" song, but could they do this with their biggest hits as "outside New Order" ?

Bernard on vocals for What Do You Want From Me, and Hooky at the backing vocals on GAWI..

Or else, which songs would you like to see New Order "cover" from the side-projects?

Honestly, I'd love to see that, but since New Order concerts are usually short, maybe it's not a good idea, but I'd sure love to hear Forbidden City and Twisted Tenderness with Hooky's bass added to it.. :music:

Idea shamelessly taken from the "New Order apart from New Order" thread.. I wondered which songs sounded like New Order, and since many have never been played live, and will probably never be, I'd sure love it to see them played in encores or something in the future...!

What Do You Want From Me would be great but i do agree stop all this joy division rubbish and play new order songs i mean how long has it been since they played everythings gone green or dreams never end new order have a backcatalogue full of wonderfull material and they really should stick to it :banghead: - barny is not ian curtis- :banghead:

Playing Joy Division songs is probably what brought the spark back and hence why Get Ready is here.

So I'm not sure it's such a bad idea after all :D

After all, it's their songs too!

that may be true but should they actaually start playing new order songs i cant help but say that barny singing love will tear us apart makes me cringe with disgust maybe if hooky sang the joy division numbers id feel different on this subject...

well i think they have enough brilliant tracks in their own back catalogue that haven't seen the light of day on stage, like "Primitive Notion" to name only one. :brow:

I personally wouldn't mind hearing Electronic or Monaco songs live - might as well if they are doing JD stuff !

As long as they don't play that shite Jimmy Cliff cover !

Too right! New Order are 100 times better than what J.D EVER were! I can barely listen to J.D at the best of times, except for 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'. N.O ought to cut out the "covers" in their live sets NOW!

Cobblers! Neworder can play any damn tune they please. I was delighted to heat LWTUA back in 98. As for the side-proj songs, I don't think it's likely, but would be interesting if they wqanted to give it a go.

For me, "Get The Message" is one of the best songs Bernard Sumner's ever been involved with, but I don't particularly want to hear a New Order version of it. I couldn't imagine any of the great Electronic songs ("Get The Message", "Getting Away With It", "Feel Every Beat") without Marr's guitar. So I guess "no" is the answer.

Horseshit.

I think it would broaden the group's direction. We're getting used to the JD covers, then the staples (BLT, True Faith, Temptation, BM, Regret). It would add a new angle (I'd especially love to hear For You from RTP)

Well not unless Johnny Marr just joined them on the tour...wouldn't that be something!

I really think that if he joined NO for an effort it would be really really interesting. I know that its probably sacrilege to say this but who knows it might work.

I agree but I think Hooky would see his arse if it was ever suggested

Agree with this. The fact that Barney's voice, especially in these days of trying to sing properly, isn't suited to the JD songs detracts from them a bit (though Heart And Soul wasn't too bad).

Alternative options: as you say, Hooky singing them might work better; or even just play them as instrumentals. All the JD songs they've played live in recent years are strong enough musically to work without vocals.

Barney actually improved Heart and Soul !! He doesn't do a bad job of Transmission or She's Lost Control, but LWTUA and Atmosphwhoopere are just painful.

i wouldn't mind hearing side-project songs on a NO set list at all. question is, how would the other members involved in the side-projects feel about hearing their music played without them? personally, if i were johnny marr, for example, i might feel a bit slighted. on the other hand, if he doesn't care, go for it.

I was shocked when Monaco performed JD's failure for their encore at the concert I went to see. I remembered hooky kinda teased the crowd by playing the first couple notes of ceremony. then he stopped and said, just Kidding/

Atmosphere Peel Sessions 98 was great though...

With the single exception of Atmosphere, I like all the versions of JD songs they've recently been doing live. The faster ones seem to translate better for some reason (LWTUA, Digital, Isolation, etc all great). Atmosphere just seems singularly unsuited to Barny's energetic whooping treatment though, it just doesn't sound authentic without IC's mournful tones.

And they should do WDYWFM, its basically a NO tune to all intents and purposes.

Because someone told him to stop the whistles and whoops for 4 minutes.

I think they should definately do sideproject tunes live. I'm sure Marr and Potts wouldn't mind too much, hell, they could even join them on stage, who knows?

And I'm sure Other Two songs wouldn't be a problem at all. ;)

I would be satisfied with only Dreams Never End - Hooky on vocal again !!! :thumb:

Hooky sings like fooking Fozzie Bear

Leave Barney alone.

He sings great for a boy with breasts

imho i think he has really cut back on the whoops recently, the brixton gigs in particular (this is without the benefit of live recordings to check against mind)
