The meaning of True Faith's lyric...

A friend and I are having a debate about the meaning of the lyrics in New Order's True Faith, and whether or not the track should count as a same-sex love song.

It has some obvious religious undertones, but the part about "When I was a very small boy, very small boys talked to me - now that we've grown up together, they're afraid of what they see"

We can't agree on the meaning of this. Anyone have some insight on these lyrics and their intended meaning?

definitely. i've always been under the impression that it's about ecstasy.

although it's so fabulous, because you can still think of it as being about just about anything that sets you free. it's a beautiful song.

Is that a typo, or is it really "talk" and not "talked"?

Is there somekind of official New Order lyric resource out there? I find that many websites just write what they hear phonetically and I'd rather have the "official" thing (since we're looking to cover the band).

I´d like to hear the perfect lyrics of Ceremony cause Barney has been singing it incorrectly since 1983.Barney see the correct lyrics in the monitor next to your feet and under your nose,please!

S'funny, I always thought this song was about overcoming addiction (it feels very uplifting to me), but looking at the lyrics again it could be seen exactly the opposite way.

One of the things I've always liked about New Order is the way their lyrics are evocative and yet open to interpretation. They take on whatever meaning they have for you.

There are no perfect lyrics for Ceremony. They got them by running a tape of Ian singing through an EQ...so they were guessing just like we are.

definitely. the ambiguity and ambivalence of Barney's lyrics are amazing. i think Blue Monday is the best example of this.

As one of the VSB's who talked to Barney when he was a VSB I have inside knowledge of the true meaning of parts of TF's lyrics.

Barney was one of the first in our year to hit puberty so that as we grew up together we were afraid of what we saw as the gargantuan dick that Barney used to swing around in the showers after games. Barney was convinced he had a future as a pornstar.

Of course we all subsequently developed standard sized 9" dicks so that Barney's valued destiny of becoming a pornstar sadly came to nothing!

not sure about the above claims, but yeah, when they were small they all chatted etc, the innocence of youth (see shugzv) but now theyve all grown up & they see what he has become they are put off by the changes.

would agree that its on drug use, but is it pro or anti? the chorus as released may be a warning, but the rest of ths song certainly isnt....

Have you never heard about Touching from a Distance book? You can find the perfect Ceremony lyrics there.

Did Debbie dig them up off a napkin somewhere? If so, you should ask her why she never shared them with the boys!
