i have to chime in with equal admiration for Laika. although the moonshake albums have been hard to track down here, i have all the Laika albums and enjoy them all. the antenea ep is spended as well. as for the new order connection...substance soundtracked my first romantic experience while Sounds of the Satellites did the job on the last and current romantic interlude.

Mr Geoff Klumpy: I've just discovered that you're a Boo Radleys and Pale Saints fan as well!! Wow, some wonders never cease.! The Boo Radleys are also MASSIVE New Order fans - especially Tim their former bassist. (Spookily, I'm also playing their last - brilliant - LP "Kingsize" as I'm browsing the messages....!) It was a very sad day when the Boo's split up that's for sure, but their legacy will live on in their stunning back catalogue (almost a match for The Order themselves!!) By the way, the Boos' singer Sice and Martin Carr went to the same school as me - I was three years above them. My claim to fame all right!! Pale Saints didn't really survive the loss of Ian Masters did they? As for Mr Masters himself - he's been involved in so many damn obscure projects it's impossible to keep track! Spoonfed Hybrid (first LP was a classic - especially Boys In Zinc - what a swooning dream song that is ! ooh, sends shivers down my spine, it's so good! - ), then ESP Summer/ESP Dolphins/ESP Science/ESP Voodoo (?!!?!?!), then Friendly Science....and god knows what else.... can't even get hold of any of his records anymore, they're so hard to find! I was devasted too, the day I heard they splitted. I worked for a radio show at the time and the news came up the day of the show. I had trouble to get the show going...

About Pale Saints, there can ony be the Ian Masters' Pale Saints. Moist beautiful voice ever. He also appeared on this Vespertine compilation, a few years ago.

And yes, Spoonfed Hybrid LP is a classic.

To finish, I should listen back to that last Maggie's Moonshake album, it's been so long...

Yes, Brave Captain is alright, but I really do prefer the Boo Radley's records because they say so many different things in so many different styles - surely they're more adventurous in their musical explorations than even New Order themselves - heretic thing to say that might be. By the way, another of my all-time favourite new bands is dEUS - who come from Antwerp of course.... they really are mavericks!! Do you like any of their stuff?? "Theme From Turnpike" is brilliant! "Instant Street" even more so!! Go figure!

Well, I work in Antwerp and yes, I like dEUS quite a lot.

As for Brave Captain, of course it's not as good as The Boo Radleys but, it's quite good anyway.

What I also loved about The Boo Radleys is that I got into them very early, with 'The Finest Kiss" (I even own the 1st vinyl LP put on on Preston records or something like that). What a chorus, 'Finest Kiss'. And it was so great to see them evolve to their incredible potential.

MERCURY REV?? Yes, AGAIN!! From their unhinged noisy scuzz-out beginnings we then get truly divine sumptuous music like Deserter's Songs : some of those numbers: Holes, Tonite It Shows, Endlessly, Opus 40 are so otherworldly and gorgeous and heavenly they make me weep. ..... like music you hear in dreams. Right - in answer to your last Question..... Did you know Sice has now officially retired from making music altogether and has a little mansion in the Berkshire countryside where he shares it with his wife, two kids, and six cats?? Didn't think so.

Some of the songs you mentionned are among my faves too. There's so many of them...

And I also like that oddball that is 'Don't Take Your Gun To Town'.

I think I must have almost every fucking b-side.

As for the New Rev album, I don't like everything on it but the opening track is so heartbreaking I could forgive them everything.

Eggman's LP is a cutie: I do love it as much as any Boos one, cause it shows that Sice can write equally good songs by himself too. As for every b-side: I've done my own Boo Radleys B-side Compilation called "Music For Astronauts" which collects a good 95% of them crammed onto one CD. "Firesky" kicks the whole thing off, and it finishes with "Safe At Home" Did the artwork and packaging for it too - my own special present to myself, in a spankingly exclusive limited edition of one. So, no, I don't think it's technically illegal!!!

Hmmmmm. Personally thought "Everything's Alright Forever" (killer title!) was their best record. It all got a bit contrived and look-we're-so-eclectic-and-avante-garde after that. And, Lordy, they were SO shit live.

But yeah, "EAF" was a killer record. The Pale Saints were (briefly) great as well....

Yeah - 1992 - the golden year for both Pale Saints and The Boos before the former disappeared off the face of the earth and the latter started flirting with the charts. " E.A.F. " was THE soundtrack to my "lost" summer, whilst "Comforts of Madness " and the "Flesh Balloon" EP (just adore their take on "Kinky Love") bookended my last perfect relationship with a girl who shared exactly the same musical tastes as myself.....swoon...

Do you remember that by the time of EAF and In Ribbons, the 2 bands together ?

Top Pale Saints songs : Half-Life Remembered (1st version), Sight Of You, Time Thief, Little Hammer, A Thousand starts burst open.

YES!! The two bands co-headlining: what a cool idea - and both bands were at the same kind of commercial level then too: both LPs out same day, both with free limited edition 7" singles inside . Pale Saints got a brass band to do covers of two of their songs: 1000 Stars and A Revelation: most bizarre, but just typical of PS too - what did you think of these versions? I thought they were most unusual, but enjoyable all the same! Fave Pale Saints songs, since you've got me started, include: (not definitive by any means): Babymaker (Ist version); You Tear The World In Two; Kinky Love; 1000 Stars; Thread of Light; Sight Of You; Half Life Remembered (Ist Version); Fine Friend (only post-Ian Masters single they did); Sea of Sound; Time Thief; Deep Sleep for Steven; A Revelation II (the very strange 5th, unlisted, track on the Half-life 12" Vinyl single - not on CD); Porpoise; and , last but not least, some of the weird between-track links on their first "Comforts of Madness" LP - especially the truly deranged wig-out between "Insubstantial" and "Deep Sleep..." I've never seen the film actually - sorry, not too big on films, I think that's because I have such a short attention span - gee, why do I keep throwing up so many new topics at once on these boards then??!! - but I've heard the Boo's version of that divine song. It's pretty good too! Shame they never made it commercially available - as a B-side to one of their last singles for example.... I'm thinking...how many hours behind are you on the East coast of North America...five or six? In that case, it'll be about 9pm evening EDT - is that correct?

The show airs on the BBCAmerica channel at midnite on Saturdays, but not in the same order as in the UK. The listings for the next several shows don't have New Order, so I'm guessing that the episodes shown here are several months behind what's shown in the UK.

Having had time to watch Later... again ,last night was good but not great.TV studios really have no atmosphere no matter how many people they manage to stuff into the audience.Much preferred their performance on Big World Cafe back in 1989 when they were playing tracks off Technique to a fantasticly boistrous audience at Brixton Academy. Saying that ,Crystal was good albeit a bit out of tune(vocals),Regret was magic(much better),60mph was good(great Hooky bass),LWTUA was ok(brilliant drumming by Stephen),but the overall mix felt flat. If it was me I would keep 60 mph, as it's the next single to promote.But drop the others.Instead,they should have played: Primitive Notion,True Faith,60MPH and Atmosphere or Transmission. The banter between them was the best bit.Bloody hilarious!! Just watching them cringe whilst they watched their TOTP performance was classic stuff. They should've had a program to themselves instead of having to sit through the othert dire muso wank festivities.;)
