Is this going to be the first time our (not so lean and mean) heroes have featured on this backslapping chin-stroking muso-fest? Any one out there know any better as regards this point? Do tell!

By the way, PJ Harvey was PURE and UTTER class! (and since when did Madonna* join her backing band??!!!)
And whilst we're talking about class - or rather a distinct lack of it - why doesn't somebody shoot the drummer in Kelis's backing band? What a goofy twat!

(* okay, I know who that other girl is - it's Margie Fiedler from the band Laika (who? I hear you say? Oh, never mind!!)

I heard a little rumor (actually my coz told me this)...Barney popped up on Later talking about the new album a few months back, or maybe even a year ago. Can anyone confirm/deny this?

Are you extracting the urine in saying PJ (Smelly Cow) Harvey is class? Hahahahah I've got more talent in my little toe-nail than she has in her entire body..... But then again, each to their own I suppose..... Just not my pint of stella really

Come on! Cut the misogyny: there's no need for that! Did she abduct your pet cat to bait the foxes or something, or did she simply blank you in the street??

Martin - she called me on the phone, but I was not at home..

In any case, I just simply do not like the smelly bitch, simple as that really. I respect your opinion when you say you like her, I just don't agree with you is all. Now, let's move swiftly onto something far less tedious than PJ (only students love me) Harvey

Margaret Fiedler - Laika singer and ex-Moonshaker - two of the most underrated and BRILLIANT bands on the planet!! I'm a MASSIVE Moonshake/Laika fan, by the way....I'm so surprised anybody else has even heard of them!! Good on yer!! Yes, Peej was top, wasn't she? Even if Hooky Monster didn't think so.....

What's the betting they'll play 3 tracks and do a short interview with Jools at the piano, who will show some embarresing earlier clips.

I really love that very 1st Moonshake EP, with those 2 wonderful songs, Gravity & Coward...

Yup, Laika are great. Pity she had to ruin the effect by shagging egocentic slaphead Moby for a while.....

Anyone know when this episode will air in the States on BBC America? I've noticed the UK and USA show dates don't line up.

JEEZUS!! WHAT 'AVE WE 'ERE?? THE FIRST EVER MARGARET FIEDLER APPRECIATION CLUB??? You guys are so-o-o-o cool!! I tip my hat off to yer! So I'm not alone in my admiration of the good old - and now, much missed - 'Shake and their siblings Laika. I also understand Margie (a Chicagoan actually) once played in New Yorker Kurt Ralske's ULTRA VIVID SCENE for a short while, before her dalliance with the short balding veggie-anarcho-crusty-Christian-coffee-table-deep-southern-fried-blues-pilfering git.... And yes, Geoff - Coward and Gravity are tops - even if they do seem to rip off the equally brill and late-lamented My Bloody Valentine. But have you heard Moonshake's last record prior to Margie leaving to form Laika? 1993's "Big Good Angel" (which came out the same week as "Republic" - so THERE'S YOUR TENUOUS NEW ORDER CONNECTION JUST SO THIS THREAD ISN'T TOTALLY IRRELEVANT!!) It's so groovy and otherworldy its unreal....The drumbeats are SO-O-O hypnotic.... ..that one's may all time fave!!

That's fine so long as Mister Holland doesn't do his usual thingy and start wanking off on his boogie-woogie-piano along with New Order doing "Slow Jam" (ho ho ho....CAN YOU IMAGINE THAT???!!!)

i have to chime in with equal admiration for Laika. although the moonshake albums have been hard to track down here, i have all the Laika albums and enjoy them all. the antenea ep is spended as well. as for the new order connection...substance soundtracked my first romantic experience while Sounds of the Satellites did the job on the last and current romantic interlude.

new order should do vicious streak on the show.

That's DISGUSTING Brian!! New Order??!! STREAKING on the show??!!! What a horrid thought! The sight of Barney's double chins is quite enough for me, never mind their middle-aged spread..... yuk yuk yukky!!!

(but top diamond nevertheless for being a Laika fan!!! Cool!)

Mr Geoff Klumpy: I've just discovered that you're a Boo Radleys and Pale Saints fan as well!! Wow, some wonders never cease.! The Boo Radleys are also MASSIVE New Order fans - especially Tim their former bassist. (Spookily, I'm also playing their last - brilliant - LP "Kingsize" as I'm browsing the messages....!) It was a very sad day when the Boo's split up that's for sure, but their legacy will live on in their stunning back catalogue (almost a match for The Order themselves!!) By the way, the Boos' singer Sice and Martin Carr went to the same school as me - I was three years above them. My claim to fame all right!! Pale Saints didn't really survive the loss of Ian Masters did they? As for Mr Masters himself - he's been involved in so many damn obscure projects it's impossible to keep track! Spoonfed Hybrid (first LP was a classic - especially Boys In Zinc - what a swooning dream song that is ! ooh, sends shivers down my spine, it's so good! - ), then ESP Summer/ESP Dolphins/ESP Science/ESP Voodoo (?!!?!?!), then Friendly Science....and god knows what else.... can't even get hold of any of his records anymore, they're so hard to find! What an oddball!

Dear Martin,

I don't quite understand how we can share so many musical tastes and still have so different views on NO.

Anyway. Yes, I remember Tim Brown being a huge NO fan. Did you listen to Brave Captain, Martin Carr's solo project ?

I was devasted too, the day I heard they splitted. I worked for a radio show at the time and the news came up the day of the show. I had trouble to get the show going...

About Pale Saints, there can ony be the Ian Masters' Pale Saints. Moist beautiful voice ever. He also appeared on this Vespertine compilation, a few years ago.

And yes, Spoonfed Hybrid LP is a classic.

To finish, I should listen back to that last Maggie's Moonshake album, it's been so long...

Jools will do anything to boost ratings of his tawdry show. And the boogie woogie I can sure believe.Maybe he'll get on down with the boys and spice up some of their tracks.Maybe The Jools Holland Big Band could do some Joy Division numbers.Fantastic.;)

Yes, Brave Captain is alright, but I really do prefer the Boo Radley's records because they say so many different things in so many different styles - surely they're more adventurous in their musical explorations than even New Order themselves - heretic thing to say that might be. By the way, another of my all-time favourite new bands is dEUS - who come from Antwerp of course.... they really are mavericks!! Do you like any of their stuff?? "Theme From Turnpike" is brilliant! "Instant Street" even more so!! Go figure!

Well, I work in Antwerp and yes, I like dEUS quite a lot.

As for Brave Captain, of course it's not as good as The Boo Radleys but, it's quite good anyway.

What I also loved about The Boo Radleys is that I got into them very early, with 'The Finest Kiss" (I even own the 1st vinyl LP put on on Preston records or something like that). What a chorus, 'Finest Kiss'. And it was so great to see them evolve to their incredible potential.

What are your fave Boo songs ?

Mine are Finest Kiss, Spaniaard, Towards The Light, Barney and me, I'v Lost The Reason, Leave and Sand, Stuck On Amber, Get On The Bus, 4 Saints and High as Monkeys...

The evolution thing also applies to Mercury Rev. Also followed them right from the very beginning.

And, to answer your earlier post, will we ever hear another My Bloody Valentine album ?
