Blue Moday 1988 and True Faith CD Videos

I know I may have asked before. But what do I need to play the videos off of these? I have had these discs over 15 years and have never been able to play the videos. I am wondering if the Phillips CD-i player played them of whether there is software available for the PC as these do not work on any of my media players or my DVD player.

BTW: I have heard these are worth a good few quid!???

I have 3 Style Council CDVs and have been unable to play them either. They SHOULD be able to be played on a dvd or cd-rom (from what I understand) but something about the format is funky. It's frustrating.

You two must be Americans.

They must be played on a PAL (Phase Alternation Line) format player which is the European standard. DVD players sold in the US, even those compatible with VCD's, are NTSC (Nation Television Standards Committee) format.

I have an all-region dvd player. It plays everything I want except the Style Council CDVs.

Your player will work with a Japanese region DVD which is NTSC format but still may be unable to play an English region DVD (or CDV) which is in the PAL format.

Don't you need an old laserdisc player to view them, the machines fron the 80's that took the 12" discs?

CDV and DVD are totally different technologies. I imagine trying to play a CDV in a DVD player would be like trying to play a CD using a turntable.

I am not American. I am English, and anyhow I can read PAL on the disc. Someone somewhere must have played them at sometime. But a lot of media players play CD Video versions 1.1 and above so I think therefore these are version 1.0, anyhow who runs this website? Surely they must have these discs. Do you know?

hmmm, yeah i've got the true faith one too & have never played it. i'm pretty sure it can only be played with the 80s phillips cd video player & possibly with a laserdisc player... still evil dust is good eh?

My player plays PAL and NTSC formats, CD, DVD, CDV, mp3, SVCD...if it's a format it plays it EXCEPT that there is something with the way early CDVs were made or encoded that makes them unplayable on today's players.

There ARE CDVs that are the same size as regular CDs.

i cant play them in my uk dvd player either though i only have true faith cdv.

you need a cdv player as pointed out, not sure about media players - my cd player reads the audio tracks, my dvd reads the audio tracks, but not the video one.

but yes, as pointed out, evil dust is good.

err yes, I have the True Faith CDV so I know! Maybe the analogy wasn't a good one, I was just trying to point out that CDV and DVD are different technologies, despite the fact that they may physically look similar.

Yup, either an old CDV player, or a Laserdisc player - won't work in a DVD player of any description I know, nor any CD-ROM drive that I know of!

Which is why I've never been able to play them!

Someone informed me that there are two distinct sections on the True Faith and Blue Monday 1988 CDVs: The normal digital audio (that plays on your CD player), and a separate analogue (yes, analogue) video section. I guess it's a kind of magnetic section that can be read by a laser disc, or CDV player. So the true analogy would be that sticking one in a DVD player is like trying to play a little 5" piece of vinyl with a CD player (i.e. it just ain;t gonna work). I'd love to be able to see the True Faith video on my copy, but I wonder what sort of picture quality you'd get with technology that old anyway - don't know if it degrades over time like normal video tape either.

More importantly: The New Order Discography says that the Blue Monday 1988 CDV has a slightly different 7 inch edit of Blue Monday 1988 in the CD audio section. Is this really true? I'm not an obsessive when it comes to getting every format of every release, but am still trying to track down every individual track and mix by New Order. That's why I got the True Faith CDV (for the Remix 7" and Evil Dust). Just wondering if it's worth me bidding an absolute fortune for this Blue Monday 1988 CDV if it is in fact just the normal 88 seven inch mix?

The Blue Monday 88 7" mix on Facdv 73R is quite different to the Facd 73R Blue Monday 88 7" version. Well worth having.
