the future of New Order?

I'm sure this topic has probably been done (and if it has, someone please give me the short answer of what the consensus was), BUT...

Realistically, how much longer do you think New Order will be together?

I mean, their sales and airplay aren't remotely as good as they were even 10 years ago. Gillian's effectively out of the band because of her daughter, and I'm sure Steve would probably like to do his part on the home front too. They're already gone on a prolonged hiatus, and now they're collaborating with younger artists. They're all getting up there in age, and although that certainly hasn't stopped quite a few bands (Rolling Stones, anyone?), it must be on their minds. I can't imagine them going more than another album or two at most before calling it quits. I'm not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic...as I often tell people.

As long as they enjoy it, that's the point!

They took a break, worked on something else, got back together, and are doing things their way, which they couldn't outside of New Order.

Hooky already said he wouldn't want to do The Perfect Kiss in his 50's, so we never know..

I'll give them 20 years MAX...then they may slow down a bit!

To celebrate my 100th post, I will only say that New Order will go on forever! So there.

They will carry on while they still have school fees to pay.

That's a result then. Another 16 years for Barney! 21 if his son fancies further education!

Not sure where all this 'lack of airplay' and 'sales' nonsense comes from? Surely Get Ready sold as well as any previous album? Movement hardly shifted big quantities now, did it? And Crystal was on air as much as any single I can remember, bar BM/WIM. It did make no.4 after all. Poptastic. Oh, and they did do their first tour since, what, summer 87? (Does two gigs back to back in 89 then 98 count as a 'tour'?). And said tour sold out across the board. Hmmm.

The prospect of New Order "doing a Rolling Stones" simply fills me with dread....

:D

only they will know. i'd imagine it would happen at a point where they no longer create anything of inspiration. i think they'd want to go out at the top of thier game. it must be hard for a band to decide to stop rather than actually split up. although IMO i'd like to see u2 do just that.

Its looking pretty obvious what they will do as time goes by, the odd collaboration, various remixes and producing/mastering are the most likely routes; more often than not with name credits as opposed to band credits.

I hope they do continue writing, composing and playing as New Order. GetReady was an awesome album, something the liks or the Rolling stones could never achieve !!

I'd assume they'll go on as long as they enjoy it and feel that they have something interesting to say, only perhaps with longer and more frequent breaks; although Get Ready wasn't on par with their best albums, it was still among the best albums of the year-perhaps we were spoilt in the 80s and we're too hard on them. They're not a teenie band, and blues guitarists and classical composers kept creating music well into their 60s or 70s or 80s. So let's consider their music work of art instead of what is today considered "pop songs" and the whole age issue becomes irrelevant.

I think it's pretty pointless to try to predict what will happen in the future, instead we should all sit back and enjoy what New Order has in the future for us, hopefully some good suprises. :music: :dotdotdot:

Yikes...I did just have a frightening thought.

Both Retro and International were released in the U.S. on Rhino, whose logo may as well be a gravestone (New Order, meet Morrissey). I'm assuming Rhino bought up the U.S. rights to the whole back catalog from Reprise after Get Ready didn't sell 150 gazillion copies. The "Crystal" single sold well here, but that was the only U.S. single, right?

In short, if/when the new record comes out, I have to believe it won't be released here (other than as an import), a la later records by James, Big Country, and a host of other bands.

What a drag. Sure, I'll buy the import in a second, but...sigh.

Oh yeah, and isn't "Rockin' Carol" going to be the anthem of the European Union?

Who's doing the rap on that one?

as for rhino being the kiss of death, they also re-released elvis costello's remastered back catalogue and he shows no signs of stopping, does he? let's hope not!

Yeah, but Mr. McManus is still signed to Universal as well, who put out his new stuff.

Reprise yanked down New Order's U.S. Web site (neworderweb.com), put the domain up for sale, and stopped putting out the singles. And as far as I know, Rhino doesn't put out new material.

Will New Order put out?

And not that it was likely anyway, but no domestic release guarantees no airplay, no MTV, no tours, no appearances on late night TV, no life-size cardboard stand-ups of Barney you can swipe from the record store...

...only the possible answer to some '80s trivia quiz...

im sure whilst new order have the energy and drive they will continue to produce quality music.. i sincerely hope they dont become a "joke" live..quite a harsh call but back in the raw days if you had told me they would be repeating sets gig after gig and bernard would require an autocue...i would NOT have believed you. i havent seen much of them lately but im sure a.j and tim will confirm the decline of live performances.. when will they stop???when they feel like it!!!

Wonder what the band would think about going indie again? The could be 'cool' like the cure and sign to that metal label, whatsitcalled...

Re: metal label.. Isn't it called Roadrunner records, you're referring to?

I too hope New Order don't become like a cabaret band as time goes on - nothing would be worse for them. Think of all these old faded 80s acts doing the "here and now" tour - some of whom were actually pretty huge in their day. Now that s what I call sad!

The label The Cure just signed a three-album deal with is I Am Recordings/Artistdirect, according to the Chain of Flowers website. And yes, they got some metal producer for their next album, which is supposed to sound somewhat "industrial."

Talking about going indie again, I seeem to recall taht they signed to London for 3 albums ? If so, the next year's one would be their last, does anyone have an idea what then, will they be offered a new contract, or sign for someone else, indie or not, or release stuff themselves ?

True, Juli, but those three albums were Republic, The Best of and The Rest of. Maybe they signed a new deal for Get Ready onwards?

...but I would assume the deal was concerning three original albums, and that London could dish out as many pointless compilations as they pleased. I recall Hooky in one of those newsletters sent by the site whose name should not be mentioned saying they've only got one album left on the contract, and then they'll be selling records in car-boot sales, I don't know whether the last bit is a joke or not !

Rhino is just another division of Warner Music, isn't it, like Reprise and London?

I hope that they stick around and defy tradition by continuing to put out decent material after so many years on the go. Problem is that 99.9% of good ( even great ) bands do lose it in the end and some of their more recent material has been a bit dodgy.

Having said that, New Order have always been good at turning things around so maybe the next album will be a cracker. Let's hope so.

But New Order have always been a law unto themselves mostly havent they? They'll probably bring something out as and when it suits them, Bearing in mind it took 8 years between Get Ready and Republic, who knows how long the gap will be until their next supposed album?. Are they actually in the process of beginning the recording yet - any concrete news on that front?

Spot on Julijana, we WERE spolit in the 80's! I just hope NO don't turn into a parody of themselves like the Stones did (and I love the Stones). I also wonder how long Hooky's knees allow him to sling his bass that low. I guess Bill Wyman's knees lasted out because he held it at chest-level from Day 1, although that did not look at all cool :bass:

He must mean lack of sales and airplay in the US...

As for making music, they will be involved in the business as long as they choose. If they are not making music for themselves, there is always the chance to produce other artists.

Something to look forward to...maybe the kids will get into the business one day then they can support their parents.

One more album and then I think it will be time for them to say Goodbye, unless they want to end up as pathetic as the Rolling Stones (please, no).

i don't think anyone should say that new order are virtually on their last legs. i discovered them just over 2 years ago and to be honest they've changed my life. as long as people like me get introduced to them, and the even younger generation gets to hear the wonders of new order / joy division, nothing will stop them!

i've not yet seen new order :( but they're the only band i really wanna see now, no-one else :D
