why is Barney the greatest?

because he was a joy division member and ian curtis had slept for a few days in his house.

because, though he can't really sing, he tries hard most of the time. (and he sings MUCH better than that hack who sings in that xiu xiu band that covers 'ceremony'; that's the standard by which any singer has to be judged.)

Because he influenced me to try the delights of pernod and orange squash (in an interview), and to pernod and asti spumante (which he referred to in an interview as a "headache" - apt name, if ever there was one ).

Because he always looked like a scared little boy.

Because he is such a happy chappie now, and really seems to enjoy playing live.

Because he shamelessly dances like a loon on stage and pulls monkey faces :)

Because, despite his boyish pixie looks, the man is/was a ferocious guitar god who gave the world some amazing, world-class guitar riffs that stand toe-to-toe with all the Zep/Black Sabbath juggernauts of the world.

Slap on Preston Warehouse and behold...our man Barney could burn.

Because, he doesn't write bad songs (exept Breakdown, but I will blame Johny Marr for that one)

And his voice (Mostly True Faith)

Because he avoided the life of crime his doppelganger, Bernard Sumner, tried to steer him towards :D

Because he overcame the odds to become a huge success fronting a popular pop group...despite having never learned to read.

Because he is himself, i.e., funny, witty, intense, easy-going, has a dry sense of humour, and so on ... not to forget he is a great musician - a real lover of music.

It was in the Mojo article, the September 2001 issue. The picture is from mid 80s, the bike has "Tour de France" written on it, Barney's sitting on the bike with Hooky on the bag carrier and Steve up on the handlebars. Hillarious picture, but I don't have a scanner, could anyone else help if it isn't acopyright issue ?

Agree with you on the singing (I've got a bit of a soft spot for his voice) and the inability to write bad songs. Nothing wrong with Breakdown; that's one of my favourites from TT!
