guitar heroes

do u think barney would fit in this category? what kind of guitar does he play? since im out of school, i wanna take up the guitar as a hobby

He's got a distinct style, to be sure, but I don't think he's mentioned in the same breath as Townshend or Hendrix. Nevertheless, he does deserve some respect, especially for his work with Joy Division, when he could just focus on playing and not worry about singing as well.

As far as what he plays, I can't remember the exact name for the big solid-body guitar I've seen him with in magazine articles and such, but I do know at one time he played primarily on a Gibson SG1 (think it was designed by Les Paul). That's the red one he's holding in most photos of JD. I wouldn't mind getting one of those, but I don't have the dough. Plus, I'm 22, which is a little old to be a guitar prodigy. he makes those scratchy catchy sounds from the same guitar most people use? fookin awesome...

i dont think yer ever too old to learn...a few chords here and there and yer set...(i hope)

It's not that I'm too old, per say, just lazy, that's all.

I read that Hooky basically did lead because Barney was obsessed with making odd sounds with his guitar. That would make me think more of Hooky being the guitar hero of the band, not Sumner. But still, his guitar part has always been essential.

BTW, anybody know which songs on the BBC Sessions feature Ian playing guitar? I imagine he did so for LWTUA (he does it in the music video), but was wondering if he did any guitar duty on the other tracks. Also, what was the name of the white guitar he played (and Barney did after his death)?

I believe the white guitar was a Vox Phantom spookily enough, but I'm no expert at things frettage.

Yeh, Vox sounds about right. I've never seen any guitars like that anywhere, so it's definitely an item of curiosity.
