What is Bernard Sumner's real name?

Bernard Dicken. Sumner is his mother's maiden name. Sometimes he's credited as Bernad Albrecht, because it was the manufacturer of a copying machine he used when he worked at Cosgrove Hall Animation!

If I recall correctly...at the time the boys were starting out, there was another Dicken, first name Bruce???, and he started using the other moniker to make sure he wasn't confused with that one...but like I said, this is only a recollection...and who knows...wherever I read it could have been as full of shit as a christmas turkey!!!!

dug a little deeper...and now the story is a little clearer...Iron Maiden had a lead singer by the name of Bruce Dickinson...and Barney didn't want heavy metal fans confusing him with that lad....or maybe he didn't think we would be bright enough to seperate the two of them...so he quit using the Dicken name...

if I can find where I read it...I'll post it...

but I'm almost positive that I remember reading it...somewhere....

If I remember right...

Dicken is his actual family name, started using Albrecht after he'd seen it on a copying machine he used when he had a job and thought that it fitted in with the early Warsaw / Joy Division Germanic imagery. Reverted to Sumner which is his mother's maiden name. Allegedly his father had recently left and Barney had no wish to continue using his surname, or something.

"Personal reasons, I don't like to talk about it" Bernard Sumner, every interview since 1981 (at least...)

I have no idea why Bernard changed his surname three times, me and my mates just call him "Barmey Barney".

That sounds spot on.

I think, technically, Dicken is actually his 'proper name' isn't it?

No one's mentioned Barney Rubble though, have they! ;)

That's exactly as I understand it.

Asked this question on a radio phone-in back in '86 and got the response 'for tax reasons!' from Hooky. Realised this was tongue in cheek but it was a good few years later before I read about the real reason.
