Is it just me, or do any of you guitar geeks scratch your heads when you see Barney and Hooky's guitars? Barney's Gibson ES-style guitars especially seem like such an odd choice to produce (and reproduce live) the sounds you hear on the records. Then there are those really painfully shrill guitar tones on tracks like TBTHOG and Angel Dust. Ouch.

That's one of the reasons I like "Get Ready" so much; Steve Osborne and crew really know how to set up and mic a guitar.

Dunno, I got into guitars via New Order, rather than the other way round, so it's never struck me that they play anything unusual. I've just always really really liked the sounds they get and that made me look into what they were using to get them. Barney's run the gamut from SG to ES to Strat and back; he uses enough distortion and other effects that the original starting point doesn't play a huge role. Acoustics too from time to time. Never seen a Tele around, but Phil does play a Les Paul. And a lot of Hooky's recorded tracks were the Yamaha BB1200, which is basically a P-bass copy...he got the 335 in the mid-80s but it seems like it was a few years before it replaced the BB.

The most unusual things are the 335 semi-hollow, which you can really hear on Music For Pleasure (sounds fantastic) and the Shergold (only 98 made), which is just a cool funky guitar (Barney's idea). I'm a big fan of 6-string basses. I've heard Barney uses Fender Bass VI's in the studio but it's never been confirmed so the person may have been mistaken.

I agree about the guitars on GR...great tone, lots of layering, really rewards repeat listening.
