When (i'm being positive here!) NewOrder next tour.. what would you like to see as the opening song? a new one off their new album or a stone cold classic such as LV or Regret??
I'd love them to open with something really unexpected such as Round&Round or Sunrise :)
they should open with either Blue Monday (just to get it out of the way, and it seems like a better opening song than closing) or EGG.
sunrise would be cool. liverpool gig was exciting to hear songs i'd never heard before being played live for the first time so a new one would be fun. but personally, after hearing the retro live cd i'd love them to open with Procession...
I don't care what they open with as long as it's different from what we had for the last gigs, and that it'll be different from the gig after this next one, which'll then be different for the gig after that, then after that, etc.
Having said that, I like songs which create bedlam from the very first beat. Love Vig, Ceremony, AOConsent, Temptation, etc.
I'd love it if they opened with Blue Monday (well actually I'd prefer it if they never ever played it again, but there you go).
Reasons:
Of course they won't do this, it'll probably still be Crystal, which can't really sit comfortably anywhere else in the set. It'd be great if they would rehearse around 25 songs (including 3 or 4 JD if they must) and then give us 13 or 14 plus an encore from that list, mixing it up from night to night. We know it won't happen though.
Call me perverse but I'd like to see them start a set covering U2's Where The Streets Have No Name. I'd laugh my trousers off.
Have to say, I'd like them to give BLT,Regret,True Faith,Blue Monday a rest for a bit, possibly even Temptation. There's a whole back catalogue that Bernard's forgotten he had a hand in writing and he needs to learn how to play again: Procession, Thieves Like Us, Lonesome Tonight, Leave Me Alone, Face Up, Sooner Than You Think, Sunrise, As It Is, Run, All The Way, 586 (instead of BM)
Age of Consent would be a stunning opener. It starts with 'The Bass', after all.
How about fucking everybody over and opening with the full 17 minute version of "Elegia". :D

here to stay would be good for the sentiment, but cant see many surprises.
personally would some of the low life tracks to open with, face up, sunrise etc & perfect kiss for set closer
Opening with an instrumental isnt as crazy as it sounds... Ok so the 17minute version of Elegia is a bit excessive but they could start with Avalanche or the instrumental of Lets Go for example...
I think it would build up the anticipation of the gig much more than a vocal tune to launch off the gig..
Band management take note, at the start of the gig fill the stage with dry ice get the band to perform an instrumental shrouded by smoke and lazers - then as the music dies down.. and the smoke magically clears - ROCK THE FOOKIN HOUSE with a real belter :)
They've opened with Elegia or Let's Go quite a few times, but not since 1987. Face it, those days have long since gone. Let's Go would be easy to play though even now, it's only got two chords and a simple enough bassline.

I think those days are gone. They're not playing to fanatical crowds in nightclubs any more are they, where they could basically open with anything and get away with it. Now they're more likely to play aircraft hangars and festivals to a mildly interested audience. Think of the Liverpool comeback two years back. It never really got going - Atmosphere opener, and two unreleased tracks to start with? Crowd remained fairly muted throughout. Nah, need to open with a belter every time.

Look at "DJ" Arthur Baker playing before they come on stage... i dont know how many of the festival crowd "get" that part of the gig.
they could break every rule.. anytime they wanted too.. ;)
i think what most people want,they wont get...tpk,aoc,sunrise etc...methinks crystal or regret ( both good openers ) will dominate whatever live outings new order decide to offer to us
ummmmm...... i think regret would be good. although i think crystal's a good one to open up with. 60 MPH might be a good one too. anyway, by the time they tour again, it'll probably be the first single off their new album that'll open the set anyway (?)

I'd like Here to Stay, as well, since it hasn't been perfermed live yet and it is one of my favorite songs for the moment. But I have a feeling it'll probably sound bad. The vocals, which I happen to really like in this song, will probably sound bad, kind of like wht happened to Crystal - good vocals on the recording, but sound strained live. Plus, other than the simple guitar and bass lines, I'm afraid it'll turn out to be another Blue Monday - Barney singing and Hooky playing with the sequencer. Still, one listen can't hurt. Then again, why should I really care about a set opener? I live in the Uniter States of America, where tepid pop and rap rule the charts and New Order will never tour again, unless its on the West coast for something like Area1.
I think it depends on how well the next album is received whether the band will bother their arse to go over to the states for a few more gigs. They received a massive following for the Get Ready tour, almost sold out all the dates, and don't forget the two massive turn outs for Finsburgh & Manchester. I can see them doing another few dates in America......good excuse for a wee holiday innit:D

This used to be common pre-Technique and has a powerfully unsettling effect. I attended a show in September 1987 and, after weeks of speculating what they would open with, was mesmerised by the sound of Touched by the Hand of God. I knew everything they had released up to that point and was blown away by the familier sounding but unknown (to me) track.
I wish the band would realize the value of shaking up the audience with surprises such as that. It makes a profound difference, especially for the hardcore followers.
