f*** me! 'whistle test years 84/85' Bob Harris? the geezer's a dummy. I was half hoping we'd get either As It Is & When It Was or Sunrise from The Hacienda link December 85. nope. try the very two bob awful 'Kane Gang' though anyone spot Donald Johnson on drums? Billy f****' Bragg, Suzanne Vega and erm, R.E.M. all non important, underachieving watered down 2nd division pop tosh. FORGET YER MAN FROM IRAQ, WAR ON BOB HARRIS.

Totally agree. I wish they'd given me the job of compiling those programmes by going through the old tapes. I think it would be obvious to anyone who was in their teens or twenties at the time what was the relevant music from the Whistle Test Years. Trouble is the people who ran it were in their 40s then, so they must be touching 60 by now, still pining for the release of a Barclay James Harvest boxed set.

It's at times like these I wish there was a music channel that just re-ran entire shows of The Tube, Oxford Road Show, Switch and Whistle Test etc so I could tape the lot and do my own editing.

I was thinking that was Donald Johnson too. Never realised he joined the Kane Gang.

no. the point I'm trying to make is that it was just another missed opportunity to show New Order on terrestrial TV. what really rattled me is that the "Hacienda" link up (Sunrise BTW)was considered vital enough to be included on the "Whistle Test" highlights of the year programme on New Years Eve 1985.

maybe they're saving them up for the definitive ogwt appearance - though sunrise would have been good to see.

...another BB apreciator here too. And leave REM alone as well - or at least write something half as good as "Fall on me" before you start bitching.

i am confussed on this REM / flaming lips thing...

the later F.L. albums have some flavor, while listening to REM is (and always will be) like eating an entire box of matzo without anything to drink.

Slight over-reaction, don't you think? I like REM, but surely that doesn't put me on the same axis as KJ, Peregrine whatsit et al. does it?
