Since i've not clocked up a 100 posts and can't start my own poll, i thought i'd try and do a sort of poll on here.
which is better? temptation mk.1 (1982) or temptation mk.2 (substance 1987)?
opinions posted here. i'm totally undecided. i like temptation 1 i think. it's raw and all revolutionary, although temptation 2 actually introduced me to NO properly in the first place.

Why wasn't the 7" version on Retro? A much better version although the '98 version was good.
Original much better. You can hear the pulsing and somewhat agricultural sequencers working nicely and the drums are much more crashing yet disciplined. i also think Barney's more 'deadpan' vocal (up to 84) much more suited to NO's sound than later recordings. 87 version is way too polished and I think was recorded so that it sounded more like the version played live. The 98 version is a bit better, but doesn't surpass the original.
By the way, the sound and vocals on the original 12" and 7" sound rather different - were they different recordings too? the 7" just sounds a bit slower and measured, with the vocals slightly lower - maybe soemthing to do with the speed.....

Temptation is the Shugsters favourite, hard to choose between 82 & 87, and then the bastards release another cracking version a la 98.
This week it's gonna be 87:D
98's better, got more punch and more energy! in fact its always sounded better since they dropped the vocoder off the original imo :D
Favourite live version by a country mile has to be Brixton 87! simply superb and yet to be bettered imo :D
"Temptation" Mk 1 for me, although the version on the video "Taras Shevchenko" gets me all the time (great bass by Hooky on it).

I agree here. 87 version just has a better feel to it and does indeed sound more polished. Funny though, I prefer the original Confusion to the 87 one, but we won't get into that. ;)

Maybe the fact that it was the first version I heard has something to do with it.
Substance '87 version for me too. Although I like the the original, the vocals sound a bit dodgy IMO.
Prefer the build up and then the first verse as they used to play up until early 82. Was the 7'single like that, cannot remember. Loved the strumming guitar two thirds through the 12'version.
