Reportage TV Show Theme

I may have imagined this - but didn't New Order do the theme music for the BBC 'Youth' programme Reportage in the late 1980's. I seem to remember the program as being pretty good - it featured the simply bizarre Magenta Devine as a presenter and an Asian chappy called Shonka (or something similar). Anyway it was about the only TV programme I watched when I was a student.

Does anyone remember this - and am I right about the theme music? The theme music may have even been an early prototype of "World in Motion".

Wasn't this one of Stephen and Gillian's projects? Could be completely wrong about that though.

Also, what was the name of the series on TV around the same time which NO did the theme tune for? Something taken from Technique I think. The series was about life in a Northern textile factory along the lines of Making Out. Had Pam Ferris as a lesbian designer and Rita Faircloughs adopted daughter sans kit in a bath.

I remember reading somewhere that the Reportage theme was an early version of what went on to become 'World In Motion'. As for 'Making Out', yeah it featured many different excerpts of 'Vanishing Point' (nearly all of which are part of the instrumental mix on 'Round & Round'). As well as 'The Happy One', there was a very brief piece of music I remember hearing a couple of times that had similar instrumentation to the Technique version of 'Round & Round', but a slightly different (and catchier) tune. Sounded like a typical instrumental 'Technique' single B-side at the time. That's one rare New Order/Other Two track that has never seen the light of day. May have it on a tape somewhere...

New Order (but mostly) Steve & Gill did ALL the music for the 'Making Out' series.

This didn't just involve using small clips of the then-new Technique LP, but also a lot of other bits and pieces (some just a few seconds long) that they put together for the show.

I remember Steve talking about having to record 'The Wedding March' for a scene. He knew what it should sound like and it really should have been easy. In typical New Order fashion, rather than simply play it on a keyboard, he programmed it into a sequencer which was then made to sound like a piano or church organ. Apparently it took ages - but it was the only way Steve could get it done.

Somewhere I have a tape with all the 'Making Out' clips on it.

All true peoples. The did do all of these. And in fact, when they did World In Motion, the BBC tried to stop them from doing it because it sounded too much like Reportage, but Steven promptly reminded them that NO owned the music, which shut up the BBC quickly.

Also, if you listen to "Don't do It", you'll notice some AMAZING similarites to the bassline with "Round & Round".

And let's not forget the theme to "America's Most Wanted" TV show...also and Steve and Gillian penned/performed tune, as listed in the long running show's credits.

You mean Hooky's bass guitar? There's no synth bass as such in 'Don't Do It', so I guess that's what you mean. I always thought Hooky's guitar lines in the re-recorded single mix of 'Round & Round' were very close to what he plays in the B-side, 'Best & Marsh' (another TV theme tune!).

It is indeed an early version of WIM, I have a copy somewhere at home along with the Cold Feet pilot music, Clocking Off theme and a load of incidental music from the series Making Out, variations on Vanishing Point (that ironically don't sound like the Making Out mix) The Happy One plus what sound like out-takes from the Technique sessions) If I can find them I'll spread the wealth

where did you get this from?

Back to the subject of the Reportage theme. I'm sure it was done by Coldcut (as it's on their "What's That Noise?" album).

nah, deffo steve and gillian. it was also mentioned by barney in the nme interview done when WIM was released, he said gillian and steve writing would be the way of the future.

coldcut do sample big-time though.

They also did 'Common As Muck' as well (a version appears on the 'Superhighways' album).

Which song did they do for 'America's Most Wanted'?

Yep, this is certainly true according to Mick Middles in his book from 'Joy Division to New Order'. He also mentions the fact that there may well have been a version of WIM with Peter Beardsley doing the rap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I would LOVE to hear that. I wonder if it was with or without teeth in!

Just checked my copy of the Coldcut album and the 'Theme From "Reportage"' was written by Matt Black and Jonathan More, who are Coldcut and released 1989.

Maybe there were 2 themes?

So, the song was never released on an Other Two album - i.e. a completely unreleased song?

Me likewise... I have to confess I was sad enough to have every single episode of this series on video and labouriously made tape recordings of ALL the incidental music passages. They're on a C90 cassette somewhere. I have that many tapes cluttering up my loft it's untrue.

Cold cut also did a theme as was rightly pointed out. Also didn't both reportage and making out change their credits from "new order" to "stephen morris and gillian gilbert"? ( annoying since making out had bass on it). As for America's most wanted, it's on "the other two and you". If anyone wants to net upload some of the making out music it would be great, I seem to recall a particualr episode from late on in the series that had a LOT of vanishing point, heavily messed with, it was some of the best musica i ever heard from them.
