Nah, actually the oddest mention of Joy Division was in P.J. O'Rouke's "Holidays in Hell" book. He just used it to describe a Polish DJ who had an extensive knowledge of Western rock ("from Johnny Ace to Joy Division..."). Not really odd so much as unexpected

2 Surprise obscure British comedy TV moments spring to mind because Joy Division weren't exactly going through any rejuvenating media interest at the time.
I can remember David Baddiel and Rob Newman's TV series in the early 90's where they have this sketch where they're trying to write a song for the show on the piano. Baddiel keeps coming up with little piano riffs and Newman keeps rejecting them because of this and that. Then Baddiel plays the piano riff from JD's "The Eternal" and Newman says "Naaaah, bit too..pub-by". How many people got that from their mainly teenage fanbase?
Similar time frame - The Day Today, Chris Morris excellent news parody did a sick MTV promo pisstake with a skeleton hanging up swinging saying "Hi I'm Ian Curtis and I watch MTV" or something like that. Bizarre that Morris should pick on him as opposed to Cobain who would have been more instantly recognisable at the time.
morris had already covered cobain with the parody of smells like teen spirit advertising tampons
They played elegia in the hotel restaurant last night.. sounded quite eerie, still it is in Manchester so its home turf i guess :D
guess the oddest place is in the book reading at the moment about the bloke who took up minigolf - see thread on main board headed new order spotting in print for the quote
other weird places include hearing them on "what not to wear", the amex advert, & the orbit advert with the squashed jelly babies

The answer is surely on Coronation Street. In about 1981 - certainly no later than '82. Tracie Bennett played Rita Fairclough's foster daughter. When the social worker came round to speak to her, he asked what band whe was listening to. Her answer was "Joy Division". He asked if they were still going and she said "No, but the music's still good."
Anyone else remember this one ?
Oddest place i saw JD mentioned was when i was on a train and saw some graffiti that said "JOY DIVISION" (obviously),took me a year to find out what that meant.

I love Bauhaus. The "Mask" video...that's goth.
There's a public access cable show here in Cleveland where some twenty-something goth chick walks around a cemetery and introduces a bunch of Eastern European "goth" videos. Yawn.
My high school girlfriend stuck about a million safety pins into a denim jacket to recreate the Bauhaus "logo."
Just checked Amazon.com...customers who bought Bauhaus - Singles: 1979-1983, Volume 1 also purchased Closer by Joy Division.

i heard mention of JD on the crap show "gilmore girls." the name was dropped in order to give credit to the idea that one character on the show is a music-buff.
on the subject of bauhaus: a bass player that i used to jam with ralphed on David J's shoes at a party (Mr. J was living in San Diego, and maybe still does. I haven't seen him around since last halloween.)
The strangest place I saw a mentioning of New Order was in my college's newspaper. Usually, in the entertainment section, all the reviews are about emo or hipster-sounding bands. But someone did a review of Johnny Marr and the Healers' concert at the Paradise Rock club (I actually lived a block away from there, but most of the bands playing there were bad), and mentioned Electronic as the fusion of Marr and Bernard Sumner of New Order but the band, according to this person, didn't utilize Johnny Marr's guitar-playing skills enough. I agree to a degree, especially with tracks like "Soviet." But, then again, there are some tracks like "Feel every beat" and "Forbidden City."
BBC sport deserves a mention. The wierdest instance I can remember is Ceremony introducing the indoor bowls.
Then there was the very short-lived First Direct bank Atmosphere advert.
Well, there have been a few. The first time my country music-only aunt played Bizarre Love Triangle in her car. That's the most shocking to me, but maybe not to you. I played The Perfect Kiss in a church on the organ once. Close Range in that video game was weird. I've heard someone mention Blue Monday behind the cooking area at Burger King. Oh, and my girlfriend once called mr Barney in the bedroom.
Sitting in the departure lounge of Bodrum airport in Turkey last year, they played "The Best Of" through from start to finish over the airport PA system. It was ever so slightly bizarre (no pun), but for sure my most enjoyable wait for a flight ever! Beat listening to some of the local music.
Actually, there was also that recent episode of The Bill on ITV where Transmission was playing in the background while the coppers were operating undercover in a house being used for rent-boys.
