My Quest

Well, this summer I've been continuing my task to own every official track released by New Order and Joy Division. My ambition is to get every non-bootleg track, preferably on CD (where available). I've been keeping an online list in my webspace for each act, and I'm pretty certain now that my Joy Division list is complete (at http://www.morriso.btinternet.co.uk/JoyDivisionTracks.html). My New Order list (http://www.morriso.btinternet.co.uk/NewOrderTrackList.html) still has thirty or so tracks left to find, but as most of these are edits of existing dodgy remixes or very rare seven inch versions, I'm taking it easy trying to slowly track these down.

It's a nice thing to note that all but one of the 148 Joy Division tracks are available on CD if you hunt hard enough. The only recording not available on CD appears to be the live 'Twenty Four Hours' on 'Still', but there you go.

My only question is about the "extended" 'She's Lost Control', apparently a mis-pressed Dutch 'Atmosphere' 12" single (catalogue number CBS NL08-22496). This is the only "official" recording I've yet to obtain. How different is this version? I've heard that only 100 exist (so I guess it's worth a fortune now), and that there's a few extra tom drum hits at the beginning that shouldn't have been there. Does anyone have this version? Is it all that different?

Re. the Unreleased Miscellaneous Tracks, weren't the tracks from Manchester Radio just played from the Ideal for Living e.p.? The Rock On tracks were definitely just played from Unknown Pleasures...

The 'extended' She's Lost Control can also be found on the 'Concert 18 Jan Effenaar' bootleg. Can't tell you what it's like as I unfortunately resisted the temptation to buy it when it came out (d'oh!) - forking out £15 for one track that I didn't have seemed a bit over the top at the time (early 1985)...price doesn't really compare with what gets sold on eBay these days tho' does it??!!

Mmm, are you sure about that? The 'Heart and Soul' booklet lists all those tracks in the Sessionography - although it could be a mistake, of course. i was under the impression that these were re-recorded session tracks. If not, that means there's only six unreleased Joy Division recordings (live bootlegs, excepted, of course).

It's not a definitive answer, I know, but the Form and Substance book says that the band were interviewed for Radio Manchester in May '78 for a program called 'Saturday Rock'. They took along a copy of the Ideal for Living ep and between tracks spoke about themselves and their influences. Since no recordings appear to have survived, it's a bit difficult to check but I think the explanation given makes sense - if the band had been recorded in session I'd have thought they'd be far more likely to record some of their (at the time) newer songs, such as Transmission, Interzone or Shadowplay (all recently recorded for the aborted RCA lp)

The Radio 1 'Rock On' interview definitely featured Unknown Pleasures tracks - I've got a recording of it that's slightly longer than that on the 'Peel Sessions' cd - it fades out during Interzone and this is definitely the Unknown Pleasures track. From what I remember of 'Rock On' it only used to feature interview segments - bands were never recorded in session.

That would make sense, as by now there'd be some sort of bootleg available, surely? I shall remove the Radio One tracks from my 'unreleased' list, but hold out until someone can confirm or deny the Picadilly songs as session tracks...

If you read my track listings (link above) I already have the original vinyl. I'm interested in owning the recordings, not downloading or copying them! I have a Technics 1210 and a cracking preamp, so I guess my sound quality is better than an mp3 download anyway!

Bizarre Love Triangle CD 3:23 Different version/edit (?) From 'Threesome' soundtrack 1994 EK 57881I have that.. a different mix of the Stephen Hague mix if I remember right.

Is it just the same as the version on 'Married To The Mob' then? Or actually an edited version? Not worth tracking down a whole soundtrack album if it's exactly the same as what I already have.
