I've read some good ones but can't recall all the details. But here's a very good anyway. There was a gig they made that was totally incredible, audience was mad and New Order enjoyed it too. But, as they did their setlists minutes before going on stage, they had to find wich songs to play for the encore. They took sooooo long to make up their minds that when, at last, they came back on stage, the audience had left the venue.

I don't know if this really qualifies as a "good" story or not...but in 93, when the band came to Dallas, my wife (well, she was at the time) thought she heard the local "alternative" station say that they were going to be doing a little "gathering" at the venue the day before the concert. So we show up, and I'll be damned if there is us and like two other people there. One of them (a female of course), says that she knows Hooky, and sets off to find him. Well...808 state come out, and I get them to autograph the cover of my Gorgeous CD...and we kind of hang around...when suddenly she comes around the corner with the King Of Cool himself...so we sit there...in awe...trying to think of some way to approach this man...finally, he pulls out his Marlboro menthols...and tries to light the with matches...fortunately for me, it is a windy day, and Hooky can't get his fooking smoke lit...so I walk over with my Zippo and light him up...he says "Thanks", and with my new found courage, I ask him to sign the cover of my Republic album...which he does without kicking me in the bullocks or any of that nasty stuff...it remains the prize of my collection to this day...since I wasn't backstage the next night, when my ex managed to get there and have Barney and Gillian signe the shirt that she was wearing (it was my shirt, so I got it in the divorce settlement, what a lucky bastard I am). Now you all know this is a true story, because you read it on the internet.

Barney changed the lyrics to True Faith at Reading in 93 - maybe he did it at other concerts too?

On most concerts, he would sing "they're all taking drugs with me" instead of "they're afraid of what they see", that last line being the line of Stephen Hague that replaced Barney's because the record company or whoever thought it wouldn't get radio play in its original form.
But that's an old story, I guess.

I was talking with my best friend the other day, and he reminded me of another experience we had with Hooky...we were at the Revenge gig here in Dallas when they were touring for One True Passion. They were playing at a small venue, and we were right up next to the stage. Ken put his beer on the stage, next to one of the monitors, and I guess it must have pissed Mr. Hook off, because he promptly kicked it off, and then took a couple of swipes at Ken with the head of his bass...

Well, this is my New Order story: In 91, Revenge played the Dial club in Derby. This bloke I kinda knew was the promoter. So, I asked him if I could help out and he said I could do the catering. So it turned out the gig was on the night of the World Cup semi final between England and Germany. So, after the soundcheck we all sat out in the yard on beer crates, with a portable telly watching the Semi Final whilst the bloke sat next to me was number one in the charts with World in Motion!! Cool or what?
And I thought my two stories were good...

Bought Hooky a drink in 'Dry' (via the barman - didn't talk to the 'great man'.
Went back to sit down with my beer. This hand, holding a pint of my own preferred tipple appeared just under my nose 30 minutes later, with the words 'Cheers mate'.
I just gawped as I saw Hooky walking away from me and out of the place...
I guess these aren't truly New Order stories, just little events in my life connected to them :
For a few years, I was a music journalist. Met a lot of people but I was waiting for New Order. Unfortunately, I don't do this anymore and so I missed the opportunity to meet whit them as they've done a lot of promo.
But, I've met some of them too.
Peter Hook (with Pottsy) in 1997, for the 1st Monaco album. It was outside, a strange place with some kind of terrace. And as it was very sunny, Hooky did his interviews chest naked. And it confirmed what everybody knows anyway : he's the emotional one. Among the things he said, there's this, which is pretty interesting, knowing it was a year before their reunion : "When you spend so much time together, you become a family. You can be away from your family for months, even for years. Someday you go home, you feel very nervous but you realize it wasn't so difficult.
I also met Bernard, along with Johnny Marr, for the last Electronic album. I was supposed to meet with the press person at the bar of a Brussels hotel. In a corner, there was Barney, doing an interview with another journalist. And it was amazing : he looked so much like him... I mean, a lot of the people I've met are very different, face to face, than the image you have of them (as the former Depeche Mode Alan Wilder, I've met him twice and he was always this very charming gentleman, dressed with elegance). Barney was exactly how you would imagine him. And he was very nice too, although very different from Hooky, and so was Johnny Marr by the way.

Well, I've just watched back that tape from the Montreux festival (it was shown on MTV) and that's not where the Michael Jackson thing came out...Anyone remembers when Barney did it ?
I think it was Reading 93 (same as electronic ecstasy bootleg I believe, but the naughty words were mixed out).
Alright, I wasn't going to post this but a little bird told me I should.
I can't say I meet them per say but I did get a bit up close with Hooky. I went to the Area One festival in L.A. and stood in the very front to the far right of the stage from 3:30 PM until 11:30 PM when Moby's set was done. I was not going to move and lose my place.
When New Order came on I realized that Hooky's side of the stage was the side I was on and he came right in front of me. The whole time he was within reaching distance and I managed to get a pick, a drumstick, touched his guitar, and a smile from him. It was incredible seeing as how I had never seen them live, they are my favorite band, and I had never been so close to the stage during a concert. It was also so incredible to see Gillian there, I was completely surprised and honored that she came to L.A. out of all of the shows. I think it had a little to do with the fact it was the last show too. I don't think something like that can ever happen again!!
Now I know I didn't get to meet them and all but I felt that was pretty incredible.
I even managed to get the set list and a free t-shirt that day. I guess it was just my day :)
Well that is my New Order story...Maybe in the future there will be more :)
