Barney vs. Napster

In a recent online interview, Barney was asked what he thought of Napster. He said something to the effect of: he didn't like it, because "he couldn't feed his family" if everyone used it.

But isn't it true that people buy in the store the music they really listen to? I like Joy Division, and I legitimately own everything they've put out (the albums, the box set, the BBC CD, ...). If a CD were released with all the rarities that have yet to be issued, I'd buy that too - even though I already have the music.

I've found in general that if I'm interested in a band, I check them out with mp3's. And if I like them, I buy the CD. If I don't like them, sooner or later I delete the mp3's. Isn't this the way most people are? I don't like mp3s by themselves - I like owning professionally created CDs. Any takers?

im the same, i listen to mp3s to see if i like stuff then if i do generally buy the cd. But some people just download huge amounts of mp3s, and entire albums of mp3s and burn them and don't buy cd's, i suppose they are the people the RIAA & others are concerned about.

I confess,me neither,though mainly because when it came out there was no vinyl release available and I having gotten into town for a few weeks since reading it is now available.

I think MP3's a a blessing. I too buy everything by the bands I love, but i can see where Barney is coming from. OK he is over reacting about feeding his family (clearly being facetious), but there are plenty of things I download and put on CD that i would never dream of going out and buying....

I buy all NO stuff, but like i said some chart stuff( i know eww) i only ever bother with the MP3's.

I dunno, i heard the interview, and his answer sounded "coached"

he paused for a sec, and it sounded like he was seeking the "politically correct" way to answer it from his manager.

Nothing beats the persual of various artists of all shapes and sizes throughout the hallowed racks of your average non-mall or non-superconglomerate record store. No matter how conveniant computers get, I'll take the record store over the computer any day. Besides with a computer you get it thru the mail, whereas a record store gives it to you the same day you purchase it!
