New Order's Best Best-Of Album

If it were not for Substance and true faith I would not be a fan today. The Cd changed my life!!! I herd True Faith on Canadian much music and I just fell in love. I told a friend and he let me listen to Substance. And I herd BLT and Blue Monday, and I was like "I know those songs" So I bought Substance and Substance sides. Then about 8 months later Technique came out and as soon as I herd Round & round I was sold and I bought everything.

Substance - it was more or less complete at the time and chronological. negative points were the re-recorded versions of temptation and confusion which were a BIG dissapointment when I first played it. Murder should have been on disc one tho' and original ceremony should have been featured.

It's said New Order's Substance came about because Tony Wilson wanted a collection of singles to play in his car's new CD player. This is product put together from a fan's perspective. It also was good from a business standpoint because it didn't make the band's catalogue obsolete by cherrypicking the best tracks from the other albums.

London do things differently (see Permanent, Best of, Retro, International). The Rest of New Order was well intentioned but the track selection could have been much better.

Substance, because it has the b-sides. Why didn't they do Substance vol 2?

Substance is easily the best. The b-sides are great (except for a few of the instrumental versions of songs on the first disc, which are good but seem a bit unnecessary). I suppose this was a singles collection instead of a "Best of," because a true "best of" would have to include other songs than were not on singles. I just made a friend of mine an 80-track "Best of New Order," featuring all of my favorite tracks, so it just goes to show.

Substance is good, brilliant in fact, but i like a cd that has ceremony, through true faith, all the way to here to stay on it...

Because that would mean yet another album with 'Fine Time' on it, and the world might not be able to cope with that, especially since the song appeared about 20 times on Retro.

This mirrors my introduction to New Order as well. The difference being that I have lived in Manchester nearly all my life and despite being a contemporary of the band I never came across them until True Faith. This shows how New Order were not mainstream and were very much underground. Substance. The cassette version.

Well perhaps it was me who was underground at the time, either that or I was walking around with a brown paper bag over my head. But seriously, I just cannot believe I missed out on New Order/Joy Division for so long. I worked in city centre Manchester from 1978 to 1980. Lived in Salford until I married in 1981 and moved to a suburb(!) of Salford. Went to Ibiza on holiday in 1983. Perhaps I had too many other interests at the time and they do say that you can always tell the year someone gets married because thats the year their record collection stops (warning to Benny!). Having said that there are still some contemporaries of mine that have never heard of New Order.

Perhaps then that the term 'underground' should be regarded as 'not mainstream'. But then again are New Order mainstream even now?

'International' was a nice idea: trying to summarise the singles from 'Ceremony' to 'Here To Stay', and would have had the potential to be their best 'Best of' if they'd stuck to the original plan to get the full length 12" versions of 'Perfect Kiss', 'Confusion' and 'Here To Stay' and left off 'Regret' and 'Round & Round'. That would have stuck to mostly their lengthy, twelve inch mixes which is what most of us love 'em for. Shame they did such a dodgy job of mastering tracks like 'Blue Monday' on the 'International' that got released.

As it stands though, 'Substance' is my all time favourite album, and their best compilation, for all the reason everyone states above.

Substance.

It's the best, simple as that. And, it's the collection that got me into New Order, having only really been familiar with Blue Monday & True Faith up until then.

No1, Substance - 81-87 best era, covers every single release except Mesh .

Best Of (USA) wtf was 'Let's Go' about? Temptation ommited also

An effort was made to not repeat any tracks from Substance. The only songs that are duplicated are heard in different versions.
