George Micheal loves Closer - shock

I cannot remember the TV programme's title but about 1984, there was a literary discussion with guests Tony Blackburn and George Michael. An Ideal For Living by Mark Johnson was discussed, Tony Backburn dismissed it as pointless as he quoted a passage from the book which reffered to the band packing their equipment away after a gig. George Michael said it was a good book for fans of Factory! and when asked if he liked Joy Division, I nearly fell off my chair as he said that the second side of Closer had the best music ever written. Don't get me wrong, you won't find me in a public lav with him but he deserves some credit.

It was called '8 days a week' and they were indeed discussing the Ideal for Living book. Robin Denselow (spelling?) was the host (he does 'serious' reporting on Newsnight now) and Morrissey was the other guest on the show (he said he saw JD a few times by accident) and came out with the comment "at the end of the day I support New Order...but with some reservations" or something like that. Tony Blackburn got JD and the Sex Pistols confused (!)...and George Michael said that Closer was one of his favourite albums..."side 2 is just beautiful. I can't remember any of the names of the songs except 24 Hours, but it's just beautiful". I've got a video of it but unfortunately it's Betamax!!

Yeah I remember watching that programme too. Don't forget Micheal used all his persuasive powers on a reluctant Peter Saville to design the sleeve to Wham's The Edge of Heaven:

What competition? For whiniest little bitch? I think the revered Mr. Curtis knew a bit more about anguish than Morrissey, and he articulated it without insufferable moaning. The only good thing about the (not Jimmy) Smits was the guitar work and a few choice lyrics. Could've used a decent singer, though. I think New Order was firmly established by the time any rivalry with pissy Morrissey would've started. I know he and Mr. (proper) Smith of The Cure had a bit of a spat like a couple of ponces, but fuck the lot of 'em.

Nah. Morrissey was still writing purple prose to the NME letters page when JD finished. He hadn't invented The Smiths. Sure they took some of the raincoat brigade, but most of the defected to the Bunnymen or stuck with New Order.

I may be hallucinating due to the heat, but I vaguely remember GM ask New Order to support him on one of his solo tours. Is this correct?

Well, I suppose Bigmouth Strikes Again always produced a wry smile, as did Panic, simply for mentioning Humberside in the lyrics (perhaps the region's sole claim to fame)

Yeah, they lunch at my house all the time. Ian doesn't eat as much as he used to and I can't get Morrissey to touch meat, but we have an all around good time.
