Mmmmmn..... are you sure. The only other noises that spring to mind is the BO ! BO! electric pad that Steve is whacking or just some guitar effects with delay and flange...

The bleeping type noise is made by a syndrum, a Simmonds if memory serves me correct. It sat on a hi-hat and was activated by Steve hitting the hi-hat. Right Brett ?

The noise at the start of early versions of Disorder was a wind-up siren. Possibly dropped due to being unmistakeably associated with the Second World War, something the band were starting to get paranoid about being linked with. They used to be available at Army Surplus Stores.

Aye, though I don't think the syndrums were activated by Steve hitting the hi-hat. There were two drum pads, and Steve would hit a different one depending on the noise he wanted to make (judging by the Something Else footage). I'm guessing he hit one for the lower of the two sounds (played during the vocal parts of Insight) and then the higher one for the middle and end "bleeps". If anyone's interested, Hannett played the syndrums on the UP version of Insight, with Steve playing a normal drumbeat over the bleeps, but live it was just Steve twatting the hell out of the drumpads while kicking a constant bassdrum beat. In addition, I'd imagine it was possible to alter the sound of the syndrums, as it's a completely different sound in Insight as used on SLC.

Which brings me to another question: on which JD songs (listing the NO ones would be too laborious...) did Steve use syndrums? From memory, it was Insight, SLC, Isolation and Decades. Any others?

BTW cheers for the info on the Disorder siren Tim, never knew quite what it was. On the Factory tape it sounds like Hooky's just sliding his fingers up and down the fretboard, but in others (Futurama and Nashville 22/9/79 especially) it's definitely the siren.

Sorry, I should've remembered these (I was only running through the studio versions in my mind). I nearly crapped myself when I heard the massive syndrum in Shadowplay on the Les Bains Douches CD.
