I bought my first New Order CD in 1989, the now rather rare Factus 81/82 EP in the HMV store Edinburgh. Up till then I had a quite extensive collection on vinyl& cassette which i sold in the (then)naive hope of replacing it all on CD
They say hindsight is 20/20.....
Anyway, my question is when did Factory first release New Order's back catalogue on CD?
Not exactly sure, but it was certainly no later than 1986. I was working in a record shop at the time and took great delight in being able to play my favourite band's music on CD in the store.
Factory were, surprisingly, fast in getting the New Order and Joy Division stuff out on CD. Partly perhaps, as Tony Wilson wanted to play their stuff in his car. My original Factory CD of 'Closer' even came with a CD slim card case, for carrying to your car! (still got it...)
Can never remember whether Brotherhood or Substance was first LP to get a CD release, but TBTHOG was definitely the first CD single, so I'd agree with 86 or 87-ish.
But who ran out and bought "Technique" on DAT when it came out?
That must be worth something.
In October 1985 I started at University - back in the good old days when you were given a grant. Anyway my grant cheque enabled me to purchase one of the new fangled CD players I had seen demonstrated on the "Tomorrows World" TV programme. I figured the books I was supposed to buy could wait !
I believe one of the first CDs I bought was "Low-Life" possibly in late 1985 - I also purchased Kraftwerk's "Autobahn" and "Trans Europe Express" at the same time. I still have these discs and they still play fine.

It has been reported that some of the early CDs manufactured are experiencing the so called "CD rot" due to air leaking in between the different plastic layers. The symptom is that the CDs start getting discolored around the edges, eventually the will fail to play.

By the way adam, can you tell that was there those band members pictures kind of artworks in your early "Low-life"
They would be quite unique in 1985...

The sleeve of my CD comprises the 4 individual photos of each band member housed in a grease proof paper sleeve as per the vinyl LP. It is nice that you can choose which band member to have on the front - I normally go for Steve to match my original vinyl sleeve. Are the current CDs any different to this ?
