Personally I doubt it was in 1978 - there were no songs then that had two guitar parts/Ian guitar in them. More likely to have been 1979.

It will also have been Ian's hand rather than Barney's, unless they were only doing one song - if he couldn't play them all he wouldn't have played any - why stop playing for one song because it hurt too much if he had managed the rest ?
You are right,Tim.
Gillian wasn't Steve's girlfriend in 1978 yet(I think). The song was I remember nothing.Maybe one of these 1979 dates :
16 Feb Eric's, Liverpool 03 May Eric's, Liverpool 08 Dec Eric's, Liverpool
Originally posted by twist Barney said he was bleeding. Hard to play guitar with blood going all over the ax.
But somehow the bleeding stopped after one song and enabled him to play the rest of the set ? Something doesn't ring true with this.
Okay...you made me dig out my copy of Brian Edge's book...and this is what Gillian had to say...
"I vaguely knew Joy Division," recalled Gillian, "I used to go and see them and then I got to know Stephen-I think it was one night at Liverpool Eric's and Ian had hurt his hand on a bottle or something, so he couldn't play the guitar for one number, so as I could play guitar a bit, I played that one number. Then, some months later, the others called me."
So it appears that nobody remembers the story correctly. Not even the band!![]()

Which is the gist of what I said above.....

Actually, Gillian and Steve were together as of late 1978, if we are to believe Debbie Curtis. She mentions Steve dumping his then-girlfriend Stephanie to get with Gillian chronologically sometime around the recording of A Factory Sample, which was in October 1978. So perhaps they got together in October or November, as she mentions that it was Steve and Gillian who brought Ian home after his first fit at the end of December 1978.
And couldn't "I Remember Nothing" have already been performed around December 1978?

No, it didn't surface until Feb/March 79, when it may or may not have been known as "Soundtrack".
