Anyone agree? the tracklisting should've been more like this:
Of course the US one would have some different tracks....
It was quite cack in retrospect, but the track listing you gave wouldn't fit on 1 CD. It would also have been even more of a swiz if it included Substance versions as well, because they had already come out on a greatest hits.
It does feature a really dire version of 1963..but I quite liked the updated True Faith and Round and Round.
I do have a soft spot for it though, as it's the first New Order Album I ever owned
I plan for my best of to be released on 14 edison cylinders, so the tracks would fit on. I forgot about 1963. i should be shot.
Blue Monday 88 should be included 'cos it did very well in the charts. Even if it is a bit crap...
should have temptation 7" - unavailable on cd afaik don't forget that these cd's were on london & so they have the poxy 7" edits not the full versions like on factorys best of...
That's the old debate. I mean, if you call it a 'Best of', you have to get the best songs. If you want the commercial successes, you have to call it 'greatest hits'.

For commercial success you'd put on all the tracks that did well in the charts, to please the fans you'd put on stuff they like that didn't do so well. i think with 'the best of' they tried for somewhere in the middle by including blue monday 88 but also vanishing point. I don't think they pulled it off.

Blue Monday is a great record, but there are so many great NO songs it does'nt make it onto my list. Maybe if it were a double!
I mean, I recognize it's a very good song but, compare to all the other NO splendors, 'True Faith' isn't as exciting by far, except maybe for the live version they pay since 1998.
And, let me remind you that song was co-written by Stephen Hague.

The lyrics are beautiful, for a change, but musically, it's not very captivating I think...
Ignoring the True Faith heresy displayed earlier by Geoff the Klump, actually, I won't.
It's an amazing song and easily one of NO's best. I remember hearing True Faith and Blue Monday played back to back on Radio 1 and from that moment on, I was a slave to the bass-heavy Mancunian music making machine. The next day I was out purchasing Substance at HMV (£6.99 on cassette in a sale - the gods were smiling for the poor stoodent I was back then) and the rest is history/boredom for anyone I talk music to. Aye, so anyway, I won't hear a word against this song. It's a classic.
Oh as for the main thread, The (Best Of) album is indeed a decent album but a poor selection by the tits at London Records. Pointless updates by Stephen Hague (what did he change for the aforementioned True Faith?) and in no way a best of. More like a "New Order may never make another record again, so here's a compilation album of their stuff after the Substance album but there's not enough to fill an album so lets add a few remixes" album.
To have a real best of New Order you would really have to have a box set, or at the very least, 2 CD's of about 30 songs (still not enough). One of the best things about New Order was the original idea of albums and singles being separate so any Best of has to have 1963 (original) Cerememony, Your Silent Face etc. God this is getting boring for me so feck knows what it’s like for you, therfore I’ll shut me mouth.
In summary. Yes, it's cack. (unless you’ve never heard New Order before in which case it's an OK introduction.)
It depends muffy, if it's my fave NO tracks compilation or the definitive NO compilation.
So, for the second one, it would go like this :
Oops, and I forgot to put Elegia. I don't know for how long it would run but I think you would have all the great NO defining moments, to which you should also add 'World In Motion'.
Again, these are not all of my favorite NO songs, but if I wanted to show what New Order have been about over the past 20 years.
For the other tracklisting, I'm, afraid I couldnn't reduce to a short list of songs.
That's not a bad list Geoff, a bit over the 80 minutes I suspect, but it does cover the key moments.

Martin, I have to agree on 'Age Of Consent' as opener. In fact, on an old NO tape of mine (10 years old), it opens it to full effect.
Going back to the best ones/fave ones dichotomy, there's something you can't discuss, it's the role some songs played at some points in your life.
That why my list might seem surprising at places but, these are songs that resonate with very intimate things in me : memories, feelings...
And I guess, music can only be truly interesting in that perspective, don't you think ?
I mean, music is so darn personal.

As for the rest... 
Come on, no album called best of can contain the horrible Shellshock.. this is probably the worst single ever released by New Order...
A best of album is to attract the fans that don't have the albums into having them buying the album, and the record label (especially in the US) didn't want it to be like Substance, but in the US they did it to sell records and promote the albums, I suspect the band didn't want that to be released, but it shows something when you put Vanishing Point on the album.
Funny, the band don't play any Technique song on the current tour, there is 4 of them on their best of album...
My personal Best of is the CD I did myself for the car, but it's not what I would have released as a best of for commercial success of course.
