I think it stemmed from sleepness nights on prozac. Its a shame he didnt carry on these themes into his song writings. Instead we got nonsense such as

"youre never in when im around when i turn up you turn me down if it was up to me then id leave you but it isnt i believe you"

Those lyrics do sound pretty corny when written out, but I really love RTP- It's very 'Techniquey' to me.

Its nothing like Technique to me. Theres no imagination or inspiration behind the work. Its just going thru the motions, and songs by formula. The best thing is Visit Me by a mile. The rest its complete tosh.

Yep, Prozac induced nonsense abounded. I recall a BBC2 documentary following Barney's songwriting experiment with Prozac. Did it ever see the light of day?

Yeah, it did. A few of us have copies of it lurking around on DVD/video compilations we've made oop on various things NO-related.

are you guys sure about this. Barney was never one for coming forward with political statements etc. methinks its just something saville threw in.

It reads like a Barneyism to me... on the sly I think Barney has quite a lot of political views (latest example; wearing a 'make poverty history' wrist band at Hyde Park).

The strange thing is, to me it has no relevance to the lyrics, themes, music of the album.

If prozac was involved maybe his random access memory took over?

I honestly don't know much about why he wrote it or whatever. One thing I know is, that I love the ramblings on it. Especially the second part.

I think it came across as abit of both. Some of it is poinient but some of it is plain daft.

The sleeve ramblings are, technically speaking, a loadabolox. The kind of shite you spout at three in the morning when you've nothing left for company except your eleventh Pernod and fourteenth wank. The album's crap too. Three years, Barney's talk of 47 ideas and his best most 'current' album and Johnny's virtual guitar, help from Kraftwerk, a much-touted Prozac binge, and for what? A load of clichéd dancefloor beats, hackneyed guitarpop and bland MOR. DEFINITELY the worst the Barnster's ever made. Makes 'Republic' sound like 'Low-life'.

Which leads to the train of thought. How bad could the NO album have been, post republic, if NO hadnt disbanded??

i thought the album was a piss-take when i first heard it. come to think of it, i still do.

I must be in the wrong thread, because I loved RTP (musucally, anyway), not to mention Republic. I'll admit RTP's lyrics aren't exactly Shakespearean, though.

I don't like the COVER artwork either!

As superficial as this is going to sound, I haven't gotten around to listening to RTP because I'm scared away by the criticism, and the cover art...

For the record though, I do have the other two Electronic albums...

If you think Technique was the bees knees you should hunt it down as this was the most Techniquey sounding side proj LP to me...

which are both definitely much better than the first

I never listen to RTP but I really like the live version of "Out of My League" from Jools Holland (or whatever TV Appearance). I think some of the RTP songs are great songs but they spend a little too much time in the studio tinkering and perfecting. In the live version, you can see some of the spark and liveliness that must have existed in the orginal idea.
