Can anyone refresh my memory with this one - the original Single Mix of Get The Message - i.e. the one that isn't s straight-up edit...

Was Barney pissed off with this and ordered it to be replaced by the edit?

I'm not sure exactly why they disapproved of the original single mix but it could have something to do with the fact most of Marr's jangly strumming is absent and that is arguably the track's signature sound. The first mix was a different arrangement with just a synth-y and rather subdued intro then straight into Barney's vox perhaps they thought was too understated?

The "disapproved" version was bizarrely the live arrangement of the track and survived as the "Single Mix" on the US Warners Maxi-CD. It also made it onto some pressings of the UK (Factory) and German (Virgin) pressings of the singles before being replaced with the straight up album edit.

I have two copies respectively of the UK & German CD singles showcasing the different versions. A collector's nightmare!

Cheers for that.

It's funny cos I prefer the 'disapproved' version to the straight album edit. It's a nice little mix.

I have checked my 3 CDsingles (german/uk/promo) and they all include the 4'05 mix. I was wondering witch mix is included on the BestOf (3'51). Is it the 91 regular mix or an exclusive version?

The Best Of version is the 2nd 7" Mix - i.e. the Album Edit.

Yep, I should've really copied and pasted that explanation as after all I wrote those Discogs release notes a few years ago myself  the CDs have subtle differences in the pressing numbers around the inner circle but otherwise artwork-wise look completely identical.

I don't mind the "disapproved" mix either... the straight album edit really does "sound" like an edit and I find myself wincing at the missing sections which you subconsciously expect to be there. On the plus side, lots more J Marr in full-on jangly flow.

The version that featured on the Get The Message 2006 compilation is the 2nd single mix (or album edit) from 1990. Nothing new.

The white label is probably the US single mix on the Warner's Maxi-CD.

Or at least that's what I've always assumed.

It would be good to find out for sure though :thumb:

Otherwise there's a possible third 7" mix out there :confused2:

I compiled my own Get The Message compilation "single" a while ago mainly for iPod use. The mixes and edits are so annoyingly spread across the formats, international releases and promos it's good to gather them all up in the one place:

Electronic - Get The Message (Single) 320kbps MP3 Format

  1. Get The Message (7" Mix) - 3:51
  2. Free Will (12" Mix) - 5:46
  3. Get The Message (12" Mix) - 5:20
  4. Get The Message (DNA 12" Groove Mix) - 5:26
  5. Get The Message (DNA 12" Sin Mix) - 5:26
  6. Free Will (7" Mix) - 2:44
  7. Get The Message (DNA 7" Groove Mix) - 3:42
  8. Get The Message (DNA 7" Sin Mix) - 3:58
  9. Get The Message (US Single Mix) - 4:07

As far as I'm aware that is every GTM version (plus Free Will) compiled into one release.

So, does this white label version feature the 4:08 or 3:51 mix?

If so, then this comment is wrong, surely??

"This white label only edition features a withdrawn (slightly longer) mix of Get The Message."

If it means it's longer than the 3:51 version, then you don't have all the mixes yet! :p

Oh, and the cassette single (as Shug's mentioned) allegedly has another version on it:

Discogs link

Tracks (repeated both sides):

5:49 Get The Message 5:46 Free Will

So, that's another one (assuming it's not been mistyped as 5:49 as opposed to 5:19)!

Sorted! :thumb: Mark from The Record Peddlar was where I got many a Factory item :)

So, the white-label 7" is the US Mix/Unapproved Mix, and the Discogs entry is wrong! :)

I might have the cassette somewhere lying around?
